Validation and Factor Structure of the French-Language Version of the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ).

The concept of Emotional Eating (EE) is increasingly considered to be implicated in overeating and obesity, and in different subtypes of eating disorders. Among the self-report questionnaires assessing EE, the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ) includes recent advances in this area: it evaluates a broad range of emotions and situations both positive and negative, and the way they modulate food intake (decrease, stability, or increase). The main objective of our study was to further investigate the psychometric properties of the French version of the EMAQ in a large sample of students. Par

Right-lateralization of N2-amplitudes in depressive adolescents: an emotional go/no-go study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have proposed the process of emotion regulation as a promising target to study the neurophysiological basis of adolescent depression. Emotion regulation has repeatedly been studied with emotional go/no-go paradigms. To date, no study has examined if the left-frontal hypoactivation associated with depression generalizes to active tasks. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the hemispheric asymmetry of the N2 component in depressed adolescents in an emotion regulation paradigm. METHODS: Twenty-four adolescents diagnosed with major depression (age 11-18)

The frustrating effects of just missing the jackpot: slot machine near-misses trigger large skin conductance responses, but no post-reinforcement pauses.

Near-misses in slot machines resemble jackpot wins but fall just short. Previous research has demonstrated that near-misses are behaviorally reinforcing despite the absence of monetary reward. We assessed the hedonic properties of near-misses by measuring the time between outcome delivery and the initiation of the next spin-the post-reinforcement pause (PRP) and skin conductance responses (SCRs) for losses, near-misses, and a range of wins (5, 15, 25, 50 or 250 credits) while participants (N = 122) played a slot machine simulator. PRPs and SCRs were compared for 40 low frequency and 22 high fr

Polymorphism G861C of 5-HT receptor subtype 1B is associated with heroin dependence in Han Chinese.

The serotoninergic (5-HT) system regulates neuronal activity in broad brain regions, and appears to be particularly important for modulating behavioral and physiological functions such as mood, emotion, sleep and appetite. Central 5-HT deregulation may be involved in many neuropsychological disorders, which include substance abuse and addiction. Previous studies suggest that genetic polymorphisms in some 5-HT receptor genes may relate to heroin dependency. Here we examined potential association between heroin dependence and four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 5-HT receptors (A-1438G

Feeding behavior in mammals including humans.

The complex control of food intake and energy metabolism in mammals relies on the ability of the brain to integrate multiple signals indicating the nutritional state and the energy level of the organism and to produce appropriate responses in terms of food intake, energy expenditure, and metabolic activity. Central regulation of feeding is organized as a long-loop mechanism involving humoral signals and afferent neuronal pathways to the brain, processing in hypothalamic neuronal circuits, and descending commands using vagal and spinal neurons. Sensor mechanisms or receptors sensitive to glucos

Sleep, sleep disorders and hypocretin (orexin).

Narcolepsy is a disabling neurologic condition affecting 1 in 2000 individuals, characterized by sleepiness, cataplexy, and transitions from wakefulness into rapid-eye-movement sleep. Current treatments include amphetamine-like stimulants and antidepressants. Human narcolepsy is HLA-associated, multigenic, and environmentally influenced. Positional cloning was used to isolate narcolepsy genes in canine families with autosomal recessive narcolepsy transmission. Three mutations in the G-protein-coupled hypocretin (orexin) receptor-2 (Hcrtr-2) gene were identified. In humans, most cases of narcol

Postingestive chemosensation and feeding by leeches.

Distinct chemical cues acting on chemosensory structures on the dorsal lip of bloodsucking leeches activate the entire complement of appetitive and ingestive feeding behaviors. However, it is not known whether the maintenance of ingestion depends on continuous stimulation of these peripheral chemosensors. Leeches of the species Hirudo medicinalis and Macrobdella decora were fed for 2 min on an artificial blood solution containing 150 mM NaCl/1 mM arginine before switching the feeding solution to various experimental mixtures. Leeches did not start to feed on, but continued to ingest solutions

Evidence for cholecystokinin receptor subtype in endocrine pancreas.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a gut hormone that regulates pancreatic endocrine functions via CCKA receptors. CCK4 (Trp-Met-Asp-Phe-NH2) has an insulinotropic effect, but is 1000-fold less potent than CCK8. The in vitro potencies and selectivity of newly synthesized CCK4 analogs were investigated. Exchanging various a amino acids, for example Met by Nle and modifying Phe and/or Trp, led to compounds that were much more effective than CCK4 itself and show insulinotropic effects comparable with those of CCK8. Compounds that possess electron withdrawing groups on the C-terminal phenylalanine were espe

Sensitivity to angiotensin II of neurons in the circumventricular organs of polydipsic inbred mice.

The polydipsic inbred mice, STR/N, are known to possess an extremely strong appetite for drinking but no abnormality in the vasopressin system and renal functions. In brain slice preparations the sensitivity of neurons in the anteroventral region of the third ventricle (AV3V) and the subfornical organ (SFO) to angiotensin II (ANG II) was investigated using extracellular recordings in the STR/N and its control, Swiss/Webster (S/W) mice. In the AV3V, less proportion of neurons (15 out of 168; 9%) of the STR/N than that in the S/W (49/206; 24%) was excited by ANG II added to the medium. In the SF

Meal-related cholecystokinin secretion in eating and affective disorders.

The satiety-inducing effects of centrally and peripherally administered cholecystokinin (CCK) in experimental animals have been well documented. Recently, studies in humans showed that CCK is released into plasma following food ingestion, a phenomenon postulated to promote meal-related satiety. To explore whether abnormal CCK secretion during feeding may be related to pathophysiological mechanisms in disorders associated with appetite abnormalities, we report here studies of the plasma CCK response to a test meal in patients with bulimia nervosa, as well as seasonal (hyperphagic) and melanchol

Changes of salt intake and of (Na+K)-ATPase activity in brain after high dose treatment with deoxycorticosterone.

Mineralocorticoids (MC) have a dual effect on salt intake: in adrenalectomized rats, they reduce previously elevated salt intake; and in intact rats a high MC dose increases salt intake. We have studied the activity of (Na+K)-ATPase and [3H]ouabain binding in rats treated with deoxycorticosterone (DOC) in doses that elicited a salt appetite. Brains were removed from control and treated animals, and 20 different areas were punched out from brain slices cut every 300 microns. DOC treatment significantly reduced (Na+K)-ATPase activity in the lateral hypothalamic area, anterior amygdaloid and late

Lateral Hypothalamus Corticotropin-releasing Hormone Receptor-1 Inhibition and Modulating Stress-induced Anxiety Behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Stress is a reaction to unwanted events disturbing body homeostasis and its pathways and target areas. Stress affects the brain through the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA), the orexinergic system that mediates the effect of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) through CRH Receptor Type 1 (CRHr1). Therefore, this study explores the outcome of stress exposure on anxiety development and the involvement of the LHA through LHA-CRHr1. METHODS: Male Wistar rats (220-250 g) implanted with a cannula on either side of the LHA received acute or chronic stress. Subsequently, exploratory be

Effects of fasting and environmental factors on appetite regulators in pond loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus.

The pond loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is an important aquaculture freshwater species, used as an ornamental fish, food source for humans and angling bait. Pond loaches are resistant to fasting and extreme environmental conditions, including temperature and low oxygen levels. Little is known about how these factors affect the feeding physiology and the endocrine regulation of feeding of loaches. In this study, we examined the effects of fasting, as well as increased temperature and decreased oxygen levels on food intake and transcript levels of appetite regulators. Fasted fish had lower b

Gastrointestinal Sensing of Meal-Related Signals in Humans, and Dysregulations in Eating-Related Disorders.

The upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract plays a critical role in sensing the arrival of a meal, including its volume as well as nutrient and non-nutrient contents. The presence of the meal in the stomach generates a mechanical distension signal, and, as gastric emptying progresses, nutrients increasingly interact with receptors on enteroendocrine cells, triggering the release of gut hormones, with lipid and protein being particularly potent. Collectively, these signals are transmitted to the brain to regulate appetite and energy intake, or in a feedback loop relayed back to the upper GI tract to

Appetite-related gut peptides, ghrelin, PYY, and GLP-1 in obese women with and without binge eating disorder (BED).

BED is characterized by overeating with a loss of control. The primary aim of the study was to measure plasma concentrations of three key gut peptides influencing hunger (ghrelin) and satiety (PYY, GLP-1) to ascertain potential abnormalities in BED. The participants were 10 obese BED and 9 obese nonBED premenopausal women. They did not differ in age, 30.1+/-8.1 SD, BMI, 36.2+/-5.9, or % body fat, 43.3+/-5.7. Following a13-h overnight fast, blood was drawn (-15, 0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 min) for measurement of total plasma concentrations of ghrelin, PYY and GLP-1, pre and post ingestion of a n

The effect of ghrelin on water intake during dipsogenic conditions.

Ghrelin has been studied extensively in the context of food intake and energy homeostasis, but less is known about its role in other ingestive behaviors. The present studies investigated the effects of this orexigenic peptide on both food and water intake during dipsogenic conditions. Specifically, animals were exposed to one of five dipsetic stimuli: (1) 24-h water deprivation, (2) replacement of drinking water with 2.5% NaCl, (3) peripheral administration of hypertonic saline, (4) ICV injection of angiotensin II (AngII), or (5) the combination of peripheral hypertonic saline and central AngI
