BACKGROUND: Type 1 brittle asthma is a rare form of asthma. Atopy, psychosocial factors and diet may contribute to this condition. As increased dietary magnesium has a beneficial effect on lung function and selenium, vitamins A, C and E have antioxidant properties, a study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that patients with brittle asthma have diets deficient in these nutrients compared with subjects with non-brittle asthma and healthy adults.

Nutritional aspects of the bone mineral accruals during childhood were discussed. Calcium is the most important mineral for bone and large number of studies has been performed to clarify the effects of the calcium supplement on bone strength or bone mineral gain during childhood. Activity of the antioxidant enzymes under conditions of experimental syndrome of peroxidation was studied in rabbits maintained at a diet deprived of antioxidants. We report three cases of scurvy in previously healthy children referred to us for leg pain and refusal to walk. All children had no significant medical history, symptoms had started months before and subtly advanced. Two of them presented with gingival hyperplasia and petechiae, another one reported night sweats and gingival bleeding in the past few weeks. OBJECTIVE: The objective of these studies was to determine the role of ascorbate deficiency in HIV infection in the defective detoxification of sulfamethoxazole-nitroso, the metabolite thought to mediate sulfonamide hypersensitivity reactions.
METHODS: Fifty-one HIV-infected patients and 26 healthy volunteers were evaluated. Vitamin supplementation histories were obtained, and blood samples were collected for determination of plasma ascorbate, dehydroascorbate, and cysteine concentrations, erythrocyte glutathione concentrations, and plasma reduction of sulfamethoxazole-nitroso in vitro.
