Contact and truth: the unfolding predicament in adoption and fostering.

It is now time to examine the crystallizing results of the social experiment of contact, direct and indirect, and to scrutinize the arguments supporting the predominant conviction that the benefits of regular contact are certain. Many adopted and fostered children who have suffered maltreatment at the hands of their birth parents have regular face-to-face meetings with them as well as routine communication in the form of cards or letters. It is commonly maintained that contact has to be beneficial because it is necessarily in the child's best interests in the long run, if not also immediately.

Reduced amygdala response to fearful expressions in children and adolescents with callous-unemotional traits and disruptive behavior disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Extensive work implicates abnormal amygdala activation in emotional facial expression processing in adults with callous-unemotional traits. However, no research has examined amygdala response to emotional facial expressions in adolescents with disruptive behavior and callous-unemotional traits. Moreover, despite high comorbidity of callous-unemotional traits and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), no research has attempted to distinguish neural correlates of pediatric callous-unemotional traits and ADHD. METHOD: Participants were 36 children and adolescents (ages 10-17

The Family Check-Up in early childhood: a case study of intervention process and change.

This article describes a case study in the use of the Family Check-Up (FCU), a family-based and ecological preventive intervention for children at risk for problem behavior. The FCU is an assessment-driven intervention that utilizes a health maintenance model; emphasizes motivation for change; and offers an adaptive, tailored approach to intervention. This case study follows one Caucasian family through their initial assessment and subsequent treatment for their toddler daughter's conduct problems over a 2-year period. Clinically meaningful improvements in child and family functioning were fou

Pediatric traumatic brain injury and abusive head trauma.

Childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) commonly occurs during brain development and can have direct, immediately observable neurologic, cognitive, and behavioral consequences. However, it can also disrupt subsequent brain development, and long-term outcomes are a combination of preinjury development and abilities, consequences of brain injury, as well as delayed impaired development of skills that were immature at the time of injury. There is a growing number of studies on mild TBI/sport-related concussions, describing initial symptoms and their evolution over time and providing guidelines for

Frustration Modulates Attentional Control and Affective Processing in Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: An ERP Study Using the Affective Posner Task.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion dysregulation is a core feature of adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet the mechanisms by which affective contexts modulate attentional control remain incompletely understood. METHOD: We investigated how reward and frustration influence behavioral performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) in adults with ADHD using the Affective Posner Task (APT). Fifty-five adults (25 ADHD, 30 typically developing [TD], aged 20-40 years) completed Baseline, Reward, and Frustration APT conditions while a 32-channel EEG was recorded. Stimulus-locked pariet

Developmental Exposure to Endocrine Disruptors and Persistent Pollutants Heightens Addiction Risk via Toxicological Mechanisms.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) cross the placenta and accumulate during gestation and early postnatal life, periods of heightened hormonal and neurodevelopmental plasticity. Exposure to contaminants such as bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) during these critical windows can reprogram endocrine and neural circuits, resulting in persistent behavioral alterations. This review synthesizes mechanistic evidence from animal models and epidemiological studies linking developmental E

Assessing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-related impairment: Differential item functioning based on child demographic characteristics.

Although numerous studies have examined how child demographic characteristics may impact ratings of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, there is limited research on how these factors are related to ratings of impairment. This study examined child characteristics (assigned sex, age, race, ethnicity) that may affect parent and teacher ratings of ADHD symptom-related impairments in relationships with family and/or teacher, peer relationships, behavior disruption, academic impairment, homework performance, and self-esteem. The study was conducted using independent U.S. nation

ROAR-Early Childhood: Pilot Testing a Brief Telemedicine Parent Training Program for Rural Children Diagnosed with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic and impairing neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosed in approximately 2% to 4% of preschool-age children and 9% of all children. Behavioral parent training (BPT) and high-quality education are effective treatments for young children with ADHD; however, poor rates of treatment access and participation limit the reach of BPTs to rural and underserved communities. In this study, we tested the newly developed Rural Outreach and ADHD Research-Early Childhood (ROAR-EC) program, a clinician-led, 7-session education and parent trai

The disruptive effects of methylphenidate treatment on circadian rhythm in adult female zebrafish and epigenetic transmission of its negative effects to offspring.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent condition characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, often leading to significant impairments in daily functioning. Numerous medications have been developed to manage ADHD, with methylphenidate (commonly known as Ritalin or Concerta) being the most widely used active compound. While methylphenidate (MPH) effectively improves attention, focus, and emotional regulation, its long-term use can lead to behavioral issues such as increased vigilance-stress response and anxiety, as well as physical side effect

A Multimodal Preclinical Assessment of MDMA in Female and Male Rats: Prohedonic, Cognition Disruptive, and Prosocial Effects.

BACKGROUND: Frontline antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) leave many patients with unmet treatment needs. Moreover, even when SSRIs reduce depressive symptoms, anhedonia, the loss of pleasure to previously rewarding activities, often remains unabated. This state of affairs is disheartening and calls for the development of medications to more directly treat anhedonia. The atypical psychedelic 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) might have promise as a prohedonic medication given its efficacious applications for treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress d

Impaired flexible reward learning in ADHD patients is associated with blunted reinforcement sensitivity and neural signals in ventral striatum and parietal cortex.

Reward-based learning and decision-making are prime candidates to understand symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, only limited evidence is available regarding the neurocomputational underpinnings of the alterations seen in ADHD. This concerns flexible behavioral adaption in dynamically changing environments, which is challenging for individuals with ADHD. One previous study points to elevated choice switching in adolescent ADHD, which was accompanied by disrupted learning signals in medial prefrontal cortex. Here, we investigated young adults with ADHD (n = 17)

Navigating change: The journey of the child guidance clinic before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mental health is crucial for child and adolescent development, but lack of resources often leads to silent suffering and missed opportunities. Establishing child guidance clinics (CGCs) is a step toward holistic care. During COVID, children faced disruptions to schooling, isolation, family stress, and increased digital exposure, leading to a rise in mental health issues. The stressors have left a long-term psychological impact on our lives even after years post-COVID. The study examines the 10-year journey of a CGC that which navigated the changes brought about by COVID-19, highlighting the im

Allergic rhinitis: indicators of quality of life.

The objective of this review was to present evidence of the relationship between allergic rhinitis and impairment of quality of life. The data sources were original articles, reviews and consensus statements entered into the Medline and LILACS databases between 1997 and 2008. The following search terms were used: 'allergic rhinitis'; 'quality of life'; and 'sleep disorders'. Quality of life is often impaired in patients with allergic rhinitis, due to the classic symptoms of the disease (sneezing, pruritus, rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction). In addition, the pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis

Comorbid substance use disorders with other Axis I and II mental disorders among treatment-seeking Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, and mixed-race people.

Little is known about behavioral healthcare needs of Asian Americans (AAs), Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NHs/PIs), and mixed-race people (MRs)-the fastest growing segments of the U.S. population. We examined substance use disorder (SUD) prevalences and comorbidities among AAs, NHs/PIs, and MRs (N = 4572) in a behavioral health electronic health record database. DSM-IV diagnoses among patients aged 1-90 years who accessed behavioral healthcare from 11 sites were systematically captured: SUD, anxiety, mood, personality, adjustment, childhood-onset, cognitive/dementia, dissociative, eating

Characterizing Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder: Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and the Spectrum of Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are conceptualized as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) as the most severe. Many find it more difficult to characterize behavioral and cognitive effects of exposure on the central nervous system when physical signs are not present. In the current study, an operational definition of alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) was examined to determine its usefulness in discrimination of children classified as ARND based on behavior (ARND/B) and cognition (ARND/C) from children in 4 contrast groups

Deletion of Rictor in neural progenitor cells reveals contributions of mTORC2 signaling to tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disorder with severe neurologic manifestations, including epilepsy, autism, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. TSC is caused by the loss of either the TSC1 or TSC2 genes that normally regulate the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) kinase. mTOR exists within two distinct complexes, mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2). Loss of either TSC gene leads to increased mTORC1 but decreased mTORC2 signaling. As the contribution of decreased mTORC2 signaling to neural development and homeostasis has not been we

Serious Game-Based Attention Assessment for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents: Preliminary Cross-Sectional Convergent Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that significantly disrupt daily functioning. Comprehensive ADHD assessment requires multimethod and multi-informant evaluation, and objective attention measures can complement this process. Serious game-based assessments may further support this process by combining structured task mechanics and dynamic audiovisual guidance in a child-oriented digital environment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate Atten
