The authors report on the behavior of the intraocular pressure of 20 patients who had sustained severe head injury. The 8 patients who retained normal intraocular pressure all survived. The 12 patients who developed intraocular hypotony all suffered brain death. Although optic disc edema was not noted in any brain-dead patients, we did find signs of fundus ischemia in most.

The authors present 9 cases of cerebral haemorrhagic stroke caused by intracranial neoplasms, which appeared among 1241 tumors operated upon in the Department of Neurosurgery Medical Academy of Lódź. In 5 cases there were metastatic tumors, malignant melanoma in three of them. In 2 cases the tumour was of meningeal, and in two of glial origin.

Early diagnosis is essential to successful treatment of a brain tumor. Early general signs, such as headache, seizures and psychologic changes, are followed by specific localizing signs that can be elicited by meticulous neurologic examination. A computed tomographic scan should be obtained long before signs of increased intracranial pressure appear. New modes of treatment have increased both the length and the quality of survival.

We present a 4 months old female infant with oculocutaneous albinism and the clinical picture of motor retardation. Otherwise development appears to be normal. The finding of cerebral atrophy by CT scan is discussed as cerebral residual damage after perinatal hypoxia. A possible relation between albinism and CNS-disorder is described.

Twelve patients with malignant brain tumors who had failed to respond to conventional therapies were treated with thermotherapy. Hyperthermic temperatures (approximately 43 degrees C) were induced in the tumors using microwaves at a frequency of 2450 MHz that were guided into the tumors by one or more semirigid coaxial applicators. These applicators fit into 16 gauge tubes or needles and can be inserted into the brain with minimal damage to healthy tissues. To define this problem, we reviewed the clinical features and neuropathologic findings in 433 consecutive stillbirth autopsies. In a period of 15 months in a material of 235 surgically verified brain tumours in 8 cases (3.4%) hemorrhages into the tumour mass were found. In 3 of these cases the tumours were anaplastic astrocytomas, the remaining tumours were: oligodendroglioma, meningioma, pituitary adenoma and metastases of renal carcinoma and skin melanoma. The clinical manifestations associated with haemorrhage are discussed stressing that haemorrhage into the tumour worsened the prognosis.
