Persistent facial myokymia: a rare pathognomic physical sign of intrinsic brain-stem lesions: report of 2 cases and review of literature.

Characteristically continuous facial myokymia is a pathognomonic, exceedingly rare physical sign of intrinsic brain-stem lesions e.g. multiple sclerosis (where the myokymia lasts only for a few months), pontine glioma (where it is unremitting for years). The physiopathogenesis is unclear. Electromyographic patterns are characteristic. Therapy and prognosis are related to the basic aetio-pathological process. Only two out of 132 cases of intrinsic brain-stem lesions in the department of Neurosurgery, Seth G.s. Medical College, Bombay over a period of 3 decades, exemplify its rarity. These two c

Auditory brain-stem (ABP) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) in an animal model of a synaptic lesion: elevated plasma barbiturate levels.

Experiments were conducted to determine whether a consistent pattern of auditory nerve brain-stem evoked synaptic lesion model in cats (elevated levels of the lesion model in cats (elevated levels of the barbiturate thiopental). The ABP in response to low (10/sec) and high (80/sec) stimulus rates was recorded. In order to differentiate between the effects of the elevated drug levels on axonal propagation and on synaptic transmission, the early components of the somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) were also recorded, with particular attention to the first SEP wave, which is solely an axonal ev

Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in coma due to CNS depressant drug poisoning. Preliminary observations.

In patients in coma due to severe CNS depressant drug overdose the central somatosensory conduction time (CCT) after median nerve stimulation is prolonged and N20 is dispersed. Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials demonstrate delayed interpeak latencies (IPLs) I-III, III-V and I-V. This was observed in 4 out of 5 patients investigated after intake of an overdose of amitriptyline (2 cases), barbiturates, meprobamate and nitrazepam (one case each). Toxic levels of drug overdose were related to prolonged CCT and IPLs, whereas normal CCT and IPLs were found at therapeutic drug plasma levels. CCT,

Cochlear processes affecting wave V latency of the auditory evoked brain stem response. A study of patients with sensory hearing loss.

The effects of inner ear pathologies on wave V latency of the auditory evoked brain stem response (BSR) were studied in 12 selected patients with flat, low-frequency, severe high-frequency, and gradual high-frequency sensory hearing loss. In patients with flat and low-frequency sensory hearing loss (Meniere's disease), the latencies of wave V at intensities 4--10 dB greater than their response thresholds were roughly the same as those in normal-hearing subjects. In patients with severe high-frequency sensory hearing loss (sharp cut-off at about 2 or 3 kHz), the latencies of wave V were always …

Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes alleviate post-resuscitation brain injury by inhibiting neuronal ferroptosis partly via the PRMT1/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway.

BACKGROUND: Post-resuscitation brain injury is the main contributor to the death and disability of cardiac arrest (CA) victims. Neuronal ferroptosis is involved in the pathogenesis of brain injury after resuscitation, which becomes an effective therapeutic target. Recent studies demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-Exo) were a promising approach for the alleviation of regional cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury; however, its effectiveness in post-resuscitation brain injury remains to be investigated. In this study, we investigated whether MSC-Exo could alleviate post

Dysregulation of Rho-Associated Coiled-Coil Protein Kinase1 Depletes Neural Stem Cell Pool and Impairs Hippocampal Neurogenesis After Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a global health burden, often resulting in persistent neurological deficits due to impaired hippocampal neurogenesis. Nevertheless, the temporal progression of post-TBI neurogenesis and its molecular mechanisms remain elusive. To investigate the mechanism of impaired hippocampal neurogenesis and neurological deficits following TBI. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was employed to explore the mechanism of abnormal hippocampal neurogenesis after TBI in mice. Antagonists and conditional gene knockout (CKO) strategies were applied to dissect the molecu

Clinical relevance of brain MRI changes in primary central nervous system lymphoma after high-dose-chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation.

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a potentially curable disease, but affected patients often struggle in everyday life due to disease- and therapy-associated sequelae. High-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (HDC/ASCT) is the standard consolidation therapy, replacing whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) amongst others due to less long-term cognitive decline. Nevertheless, white matter lesions (WML) are common findings in brain MRI after HDC/ASCT, but their clinical significance remains underexplored. Here, we correlate WML and brain atrophy with

Human neural stem cells derived from fetal human brain communicate with each other and rescue ischemic neuronal cells through tunneling nanotubes.

Pre-clinical trials have demonstrated the neuroprotective effects of transplanted human neural stem cells (hNSCs) during the post-ischemic phase. However, the exact neuroprotective mechanism remains unclear. Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are long plasma membrane bridges that physically connect distant cells, enabling the intercellular transfer of mitochondria and contributing to post-ischemic repair processes. Whether hNSCs communicate through TNTs and their role in post-ischemic neuroprotection remains unknown. In this study, non-immortalized hNSC lines derived from fetal human brain tissues wer

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy and auditory brain-stem response audiometry as predictors of bilirubin-induced neurologic dysfunction in full-term jaundiced neonates.

The purpose of this research was to define the functions of MRS and ABR as predictors of bilirubin-induced neurologic dysfunction (BIND) in full-term neonates who required intervention (phototherapy and/or exchange transfusion). This prospective cohort study was done at the NICU of Tanta University Hospitals over a 2-year duration. Fifty-six full-term neonates with pathological unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia were divided according to MRS and ABR findings into 2 groups: group (1) included 26 cases with mild acute bilirubin encephalopathy (BIND-M score 1-4). Group (2) included 30 cases with neo

Short-term high-fat diet consumption increases body weight and body adiposity and alters brain stem taste information processing in rats.

Diet-induced obesity is known to develop whether exposed to a high-energy diet (HED) or a high-fat diet (HFD). However, it is still not clea … ysiological recordings revealed that only the ad libitum HFD and not the isocaloric-HFD altered the brain stem gustatory neural responses to oral taste stimulation. In conclusion, this study showed that increased fat intake might result in significant body weight gain even under isocaloric and metabolically healthy conditions and demonstrated changes in cent …

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Is an Important Therapeutic Factor in Mesenchymal Stem Cell Secretions for Treatment of Traumatic Peripheral Pelvic Injuries.

Traumatic neuromuscular injury to the pudendal nerve and urethra during childbirth does not regenerate well and contributes to stress urinary incontinence in women. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can improve neuroregeneration via their secretions, or secretome, which includes brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). In this study, we investigated whether BDNF is a key factor in the secretome of MSCs for the facilitation of functional recovery following a dual simulated childbirth injury. BDNF knockdown (KD) MSCs were created using an anti-BDNF shRNA lentivirus vector. A scrambled sequence was

The Prescription of Oral Mucosal Mesenchymal Stem Cells post-Traumatic Brain Injury Improved the Kidney and Heart Inflammation and Oxidative Stress.

BACKGROUND: In the last years, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been considered as a useful strategy to treat many diseases such as traumatic brain injury (TBI). The production of inflammatory agents by TBI elicits an inflammatory response directed to other systems of body, such as the heart and the kidneys. In this study, the efficacy of oral mucosal mesenchymal stem cells (OMSCs) prescription after TBI in inflammation and oxidative stress of the heart and kidneys was evaluated. METHODS: Twenty-four male rats were located in groups as follows: sham, TBI, vehicle (Veh), and stem cell (SC).

Basal ganglia reign through downstream control of motor centers in midbrain and brain stem while updating cortex with efference copy information.

In this issue of Neuron, McElvain et al. (2021) show that the major output of the basal ganglia, the substantia nigra pars reticulata, targets no fewer than 42 midbrain and brainstem structures and conveys an efference copy of the downstream commands back via thalamus to the cortex and striatum.

Neuro-regenerative imidazole-functionalized GelMA hydrogel loaded with hAMSC and SDF-1α promote stem cell differentiation and repair focal brain injury.

Brain tissues that are severely damaged by traumatic brain injury (TBI) is hardly regenerated, which leads to a cavity or a repair with glial scarring. Stem-cell therapy is one viable option to treat TBI-caused brain tissue damage, whose use is, whereas, limited by the low survival rate and differentiation efficiency of stem cells. To approach this problem, we developed an injectable hydrogel using imidazole groups-modified gelatin methacrylate (GelMA-imid). In addition, polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles were used as carrier for stromal-cell derived factor-1 (SDF-1α). GelMA-imid hydrogel loaded

Effect of MicroRNA-126a-3p on Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Repairing Blood-brain Barrier and Nerve Injury after Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a disease that threatens human health due to its high morbidity and mortality. On behalf of finding the better methods in the treatment of ICH, researchers pay more attention to a new technology which is finding effective genes to modify stem cells. METHODS: In this study, we isolated, cultured and identified bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in vitro. Further, the MSCs (transfected with lentivirus expressing microRNA-126a-3p (miR-126)) were injected into the type Ⅶ collagenase-induced ICH rats to investigate the recovery effects of blood-b

Disseminated Hormographiella aspergillata Infection with Lung and Brain Involvement after Allogenic Hematopoietic Stem-Cell Transplantation in a 54-Year-Old Man.

Hormographiella is a rare fungal pathogen in humans; however, case reports have described disseminated infection in immunocompromised hosts. This pathogen has been described to yield poor prognosis in patients who harbor it. Herein, we present a case report of autopsy-proven disseminated Hormographiella aspergillata infection, confirmed by DNA sequencing, in a patient experiencing a relapse of leukemia. This 54-year-old Caucasian man with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) that had been diagnosed in 1989, after having received a hematopoietic cell allotransplant from a compatible sibling donor

Intranasally Administered Exosomes from Umbilical Cord Stem Cells Have Preventive Neuroprotective Effects and Contribute to Functional Recovery after Perinatal Brain Injury.

Perinatal brain injury (PBI) in preterm birth is associated with substantial injury and dysmaturation of white and gray matter, and can lead to severe neurodevelopmental deficits. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have been suggested to have neuroprotective effects in perinatal brain injury, in part through the release of extracellular vesicles like exosomes. We aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of intranasally administered MSC-derived exosomes and their potential to improve neurodevelopmental outcome after PBI. Exosomes were isolated from human Wharton's jelly MSC supernatant using
