Contaminants in fishes from Great Lakes-influenced sections and above dams of three Michigan rivers. I: Concentrations of organo chlorine insecticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxin equivalents, and mercury.

Fishes of the Great Lakes contain hazardous chemicals such as synthetic halogenated hydrocarbons and metals. These fish can move from the lakes into the Great Lakes tributaries of Michigan. In doing so, they transport concentrations of contaminants which may represent a risk to wildlife. Concentrations of mercury (Hg), total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents (TCDD-EQ), total DDT complex, aldrin, endrin, dieldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, hexachlorobenzene, cis-chlordane, oxychlordane, endosulfan-I, methoxychlor, trans-chlordane, a

Impacts of Cinnamomum tamala leaf extract on growth, skin mucosal and serum immunity, antioxidant activity, and expression of cytokine genes in Cyprinus carpio fingerlings.

This study aimed to assess the effect of Cinnamomum tamala leaf-extract (CTE) on the growth, immune response, antioxidant status, gene expression, and disease resistance of Cyprinus carpio. Over a 70-day period, fish (8.82 ± 0.04 g) were fed diets supplemented with graded levels of CTE (mg/kg): 0 (Control), 200 (CTE2), 300 (CTE3), 400 (CTE4), 500 (CTE5), and 600 (CTE6). Cytokine gene expression was studied 3 days post-challenge with A. hydrophila. CTE at 400-600 mg/kg maximized the growth performance. Key immune parameters, such as total protein, lysozyme, ACH50, alkaline phosphatase, skin muc

Genomic and functional insights into a novel Lactococcus sp. AK05 from Cirrhinus mrigala with potent antagonism against Aeromonas hydrophila.

In aquaculture, addressing antibiotic-resistant fish pathogens underscores the immediate necessity for the identification of candidate probiotic strains with favorable safety and functional attributes as alternatives to antibiotics. We isolated and characterized a new strain of Lactococcus sp., called AK05, from the gut of Cirrhinus mrigala. The phenotypic tests showed that it can survive and grow in harsh conditions, including a pH of 4, and 0.8% bile salts. At 8% NaCl, it survived and exhibited merely a one-log rise in CFU·mL⁻¹, while NaCl levels ≤ 5% facilitated over a 4-log increase in 24

Does a historical catch record support a stable latent structure in catch composition across ports, taxa, and years? An assessment of cooperative-level catch statistics from Lake Biwa, Japan, 1962-1972.

Historical inland-fisheries records resolved by taxon, location, and year are rare, and whether such records support stable low-dimensional structure is an empirical question. We analyzed annual catch records from Lake Biwa, Japan, covering 44 fisheries cooperatives, 13 taxonomic categories, and 11 years (1962-1972), immediately preceding major coastal modifications associated with the Lake Biwa Comprehensive Development Project. We assessed whether non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), with and without spatial smoothing based on port coordinates, provided a stable representation of port-ye

The Role of IgM Anti-acetylated Protein Antibodies and B Cells in the Origin of Antimodified Protein Autoimmunity in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by anti-modified protein antibodies (AMPAs), including anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), anti-carbamylated protein antibodies (anti-CarP), and anti-acetylated protein antibodies (AAPA). In contrast to other AMPAs, AAPA IgM is found in healthy individuals, raising questions about its role in early immune responses. We investigated whether AAPA IgM serves as a precursor for other AMPAs, marking the initial breach of tolerance in RA. METHODS: AAPA IgM levels were measured in cord blood and serum of children up to three years old t

IRAK1BP1 negatively regulated innate immune response via NF-κB signal pathway in blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala).

Interleukin receptor-associated kinase (IRAK)-1 binding protein 1 (IRAK1BP1) is a vital factor in preventing dangerous overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines by the innate immune system. The structure and function of IRAK1BP1 have been well investigated in mammals, yet the piscine IRAK1BP1 is poorly understood. In the present study, the first teleost fish IRAK1BP1 from blunt snout bream, maIRAK1BP1, was identified and characterized, which was composed of a 750 bp open reading frame encoding a protein of 249 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that maIRAK1BP1, is a novel member of

Exposure to Acute Concentration of Malathion Induced Behavioral, Hematological, and Biochemical Toxicities in the Brain of Labeo rohita.

A surge has been observed in the use of pesticides to boost agricultural yield in order to feed the continuously increasing human population. Different types and classes of broad-spectrum insecticides are in use, and the number is constantly increasing with the introduction of new ones. Keeping in view the broad-spectrum effects of organophosphate pesticides including Malathion (MLN), their use is continuously increasing without appraising their toxic impacts on non-target organisms. The continuous rise in the use of MLN has led to its presence, persistence, and transport to water bodies globa

Taurine and Glutathione Alleviate Aeromonas hydrophila Infection by Inhibiting Inflammation and Ferroptosis via ROS/NF-κB Pathway in Fishes.

Aeromonas hydrophila-induced bacterial sepsis is a major threat to aquaculture, characterised by excessive inflammation, ferroptosis (an iron-dependent lipid peroxidation-driven cell death) and oxidative damage, which collectively lead to high mortality. Taurine (TAU) and glutathione (GSH) have been demonstrated to have potential therapeutic efficacy against ferroptosis-associated pathologies through redox modulation. However, their combined effects and underlying mechanisms in alleviating A. hydrophila infection remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the protective roles of TAU, GSH a

Comparative Stability and Anesthetic Evaluation of Holy Basil Essential Oil Formulated in SNEDDS and Microemulsion Systems in Cyprinus carpio var. Koi.

Background/Objectives: Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum L.) essential oil exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anesthetic activities, mainly due to eugenol, methyl eugenol, and β-caryophyllene. However, its clinical application is limited by poor water solubility, instability, and low bioavailability. This study developed and compared two delivery systems, self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems (SNEDDS) and microemulsions (ME), to enhance their stability and fish anesthetic efficacy. Methods: The optimized SNEDDS (25% basil oil, 8.33% coconut oil, 54.76% Tween 80, 11.91% PEG 400) and ME

Analysis revealed the molecular mechanism of oxidative stress-autophagy-induced liver injury caused by high alkalinity: integrated whole hepatic transcriptome and metabolome.

INTRODUCTION: High-alkalinity water is a serious health hazard for fish and can cause oxidative stress and metabolic dysregulation in fish livers. However, the molecular mechanism of liver damage caused by high alkalinity in fish is unclear. METHODS: In this study, 180 carp were randomly divided into a control (C) group and a high-alkalinity (A25) group and were cultured for 56 days. High-alkalinity-induced liver injury was analysed using histopathological, whole-transcriptome, and metabolomic analyses. RESULTS: Many autophagic bodies and abundant mitochondrial membrane damage were observed

CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Transgenesis of the Masu Salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) elovl2 Gene Improves n-3 Fatty Acid Content in Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus).

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), play a very important role in human health. Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is one of the leading freshwater aquaculture species in the USA, but has low levels of EPA and DHA compared to some fish such as salmon. To improve EPA and DHA content, a modification of the n-3 PUFA biosynthetic pathway was achieved through the insertion of an elovl2 transgene isolated from masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) driven by a carp β-actin promoter using a two-hit by

Growth hormone promotes hair cell regeneration in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) inner ear following acoustic trauma.

BACKGROUND: Previous microarray analysis showed that growth hormone (GH) was significantly upregulated following acoustic trauma in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) ear suggesting that GH may play an important role in the process of auditory hair cell regeneration. Our objective was to examine the effects of exogenous and endogenous GH on zebrafish inner ear epithelia following acoustic trauma. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We induced auditory hair cell damage by exposing zebrafish to acoustic overstimulation. Fish were then injected intraperitoneally with either carp GH or buffer, and placed in

Inclusion of Atlantic salmon in the Chinese diet reduces cardiovascular disease risk markers in dyslipidemic adult men.

Although the beneficial effects of n-3 fatty acids on several physiologic functions have been widely reported, information about the effects of oily fish in the Asian diet on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is diminutive. We hypothesize that daily inclusion of oily fish for 8 weeks in the Chinese diet will elevate serum eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels and reduce CVD risk markers in dyslipidemic adult men, comparable with the effects generally observed by inclusion of oily fish in the Western diet. In this 8-week randomized, parallel-arm, food-based intervent

Targeted proteasome inhibition by Velcade induces apoptosis in human mesothelioma and breast cancer cell lines.

INTRODUCTION: Thoracic malignancies and human breast cancer (HBC) continue to be aggressive solid tumors that are poor responders to the existing conventional standard chemotherapeutic approaches. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an asbestos-related tumor of the thoracic pleura that lacks effective treatment options. Altered ubiquitin proteasome pathway is frequently encountered in many malignancies including HBC and MPM and thus serves as an important target for therapeutic intervention strategies. Although proteasome inhibitor Velcade (Bortezomib) has been under clinical investigation

Myocardial revascularization before carotid endarterectomy.

Diffuse atherosclerosis involving more than 1 vascular bed is a challenging problem. The natural histories of carotid and coronary atherosclerosis are clearly intertwined. The optimal strategies for treatment of patients who present with carotid artery stenoses and co-existent coronary artery disease (CAD) remain controversial. Minimally invasive screening tests for CAD are often unreliable, and patients presenting with significant extracranial carotid artery stenoses should usually be assumed to harbor some degree of CAD. Numerous studies have confirmed, however, that in contrast to periphera

Exploring the neuroprotective potential of KC14 peptide from Cyprinus carpio against oxidative stress-induced neurodegeneration by regulating antioxidant mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress, a condition characterized by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), can cause significant damage to cellular macromolecules, leading to neurodegeneration. This underscores the need for effective antioxidant therapies that can mitigate oxidative stress and its associated neurodegenerative effects. KC14 peptide derived from liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide-2 A (LEAP 2 A) from Cyprinus carpio L. has been identified as a potential therapeutic agent. This study focuses on the antioxidant and neuroprotective properties of the KC14 peptide is to eval
