Examining Texting in the Classroom Between Adolescents Without and With Learning Disabilities: Do Classroom Climate and Academic Boredom Matter?

The present study investigated texting in the classroom through written (SMS) and instant (social media) messages comparatively between adolescents without and with LD. Also, applying the Social Cognitive Theory, the role of perceived classroom climate and academic boredom in texting in the classroom was co-examined through an explanatory mediation model. Overall, 439 students (59% girls) without LD and 408 students (47% girls) with LD, who both attended randomly selected Greek junior high schools of Mainstream Education and used a mobile phone, completed self-reported scales about the variabl

Further evidence of seasonality of mania in the tropics.

BACKGROUND: Findings from various temperate regions have quite consistently shown a spring/summer peak for the occurrence of manic episodes, but inconsistencies can still be found in results from tropical regions. The present study was designed to investigate the seasonal distribution of mania and its correlations to climatic variables, in a large sample of patients visiting the emergency psychiatric room. METHODS: A hospital registry of 5172 emergency psychiatric visits for mania, 2000-2007, at a public psychiatric hospital at Belo Horizonte, Brazil (latitude 19 degrees 55' S), was analyzed.

[The influence of weather conditions on the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases by the example of West Nile fever in Russia].

Climate changes must influence the incidence of vector-borne infections, but their effects cannot be revealed due to lack of long-term observations. The impact of short-term weather changes may be used as a model. In Russia the biggest numbers of clinical cases of mosquito-borne West Nile infection were registered in 1999 in Volgograd and Astrakhan regions. The analysis of climatic dataset since 1900 shows that 1999 was the hottest year in Volgograd in the 20th century due to a very mild winter (December-March) and a rather hot summer (June-September). The author of the article puts forward a

The potential geographical distribution of the Old World screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana.

The potential geographical distribution and relative abundance of the Old World screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve (Diptera: Calliphoridae) as determined by climate, was assessed using CLIMEX, a computer program for matching climates. CLIMEX describes the relative growth and persistence of animal populations in relation to climate. The observed global distribution of C.bezziana was compared with the potential distribution predicted by CLIMEX. The differences in the two distributions indicate the areas at risk of colonization, with particular reference to Australia and the Americas.

Integrating MaxEnt and MaxNet for climate-resilient habitat restoration: Predicting the ecological niche of Eucalyptus tereticornis in semi-arid landscapes.

Accurate modeling of species distribution is essential for effective biodiversity conservation, afforestation planning, and land-use management. This study presents a comparative analysis of two prominent presence-only species distribution models Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) and MaxNet to evaluate their efficacy in predicting the ecological niche of Eucalyptus tereticornis in a semi-arid agro-climatic region. A total of 138 georeferenced occurrence records and 25 pseudo-absence points were used, incorporating key environmental variables such as wind speed, temperature range, precipitation, and roo

Ozone depletion and climate change: impacts on UV radiation.

The Montreal Protocol is working, but it will take several decades for ozone to return to 1980 levels. The atmospheric concentrations of ozone depleting substances are decreasing, and ozone column amounts are no longer decreasing. Mid-latitude ozone is expected to return to 1980 levels before mid-century, slightly earlier than predicted previously. However, the recovery rate will be slower at high latitudes. Springtime ozone depletion is expected to continue to occur at polar latitudes, especially in Antarctica, in the next few decades. Because of the success of the Protocol, increases in UV-B

High-risk antimicrobial resistance genomic traits in multidrug-resistant Salmonella across China's food chain: projections to 2050.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising globally, yet factors shaping its genomic evolution remain poorly understood. We investigated how socioeconomic, climate, and health factors are associated with AMR spread in multi-drug resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica across China's food chain, mapped hotspots and forecasted genomic trait prevalence to 2050. We analysed 2,536 MDR genomes from 15 provinces over 16 years, covering patients, food and non-food workers, meat, livestock, and environmental sources. A machine learning framework integrated genomic surveillance with risk assessment to identif

The effect of intrinsic and extrinsic variables on the decomposition of small cadaveric remains in a temperate maritime climate in West-Europe.

The decomposition process of a body can be influenced by various intrinsic and extrinsic variables. While many intrinsic and extrinsic variables are known to affect decomposition, their specific effects under different climate conditions remain unclear. Gaining a better fundamental understanding of how these variables affect the decomposition rate contributes to better interpreting the taphonomic context, being able to more accurately estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI) in the future, and help prevent over- or underestimation of the PMI. Here we investigated the influence of weight (rangin

Environmental outcomes of artificial intelligence.

This paper studies the macroenvironmental consequences of AI adoption in a balanced annual panel of 30 advanced economies (EU-27, the US, UK and Japan) over 1995-2020. We examine both territorial (production-based) and consumption-based CO2 emissions to account for trade-embedded carbon, and we assess adaptation capacity using the ND-GAIN readiness index. AI is measured using an AI capital stock indicator capturing tangible and intangible AI-related assets. Empirically, we estimate fixed-effects models with Driscoll-Kraay standard errors and strengthen causal interpretation for the emissions o

Environmental controls over greenhouse gas dynamics of tropical peatlands of the Central Congo Basin.

The central Congo Basin hosts the world's largest tropical peatland complex, storing 29.0 Pg of carbon, the equivalent to three years of global CO₂ emissions. These peatlands are significant natural sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs), including CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O, but the environmental controls on their emissions remain poorly understood. To address this, we collected surface peat samples from six regional landscapes, spanning palm- and hardwood-dominated sites, and incubated them under three hydrological regimes: flooded aerobic, flooded anoxic and mesic (aerobic and no surface water). This all

Improved estimation of carbon dioxide and methane using machine learning with satellite observations over the Arabian Peninsula.

Estimating spatiotemporal maps of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is important for understanding climate change and developing mitigation strategies. However, current methods face challenges, including the coarse resolution of numerical models, and gaps in satellite data, making it essential to improve the spatiotemporal estimation of GHGs. This study aims to develop an advanced technique to produce high-fidelity (1 km) maps of CO2 and CH4 over the Arabian Peninsula, a highly vulnerable region to climate change. Using XGBoost, columnar carbon dioxide (XCO2) and methane (XCH4) concentrations using sate

A machine learning framework for estimating the probability of blacklegged tick population establishment in eastern Canada using Earth observation data.

Ixodes scapularis ticks are the primary vector of Lyme disease (LD) in North America, and their range has expanded into southeastern and southcentral Canada with climate change. This study presents a comprehensive machine learning (ML) framework to estimate the probability of blacklegged tick population establishment as measured using active tick surveillance data. Environmental predictor variables were derived from Earth observation (EO) data at multiple spatial scales to assess their individual contributions in the prediction models. Among the tested ML algorithms, XGBoost emerged as the top

Canine leptospirosis and environmental risk factors in coastal New South Wales, Australia (2021 - 2023).

Canine leptospirosis is a re-emerging zoonotic disease that has been long neglected in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Clinical canine leptospirosis cases in Shoalhaven, southeastern NSW from October 2021 to May 2023 were analysed to examine associations between environmental factors and the local occurrence of canine leptospirosis. Poisson models (log-transformed canine population offset and adjusted for the Index of Economic Resources) of spatial (landscape factors adjusted for economic status) and temporal environmental factors (lagged weekly climate variables) were fit to the data. Using scenario planning to evaluate the impacts of climate change on wildlife populations and communities in the Florida Everglades.

It is uncertain how climate change will impact hydrologic drivers of wildlife population dynamics in freshwater wetlands of the Florida Everglades, or how to accommodate this uncertainty in restoration decisions. Using projections of climate scenarios for the year 2060, we evaluated how several possible futures could affect wildlife populations (wading birds, fish, alligators, native apple snails, amphibians, threatened and invasive species) across the Everglades landscape and inform planning already underway. We used data collected from prior research and monitoring to parameterize our wildli

Battling dengue in a warming world: How climate and urbanization shape transmission in low- and middle-income countries (a rapid review).

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a globally prevalent vector-borne disease, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) experiencing a disproportionate burden. Transmission patterns are increasingly influenced by rising global temperatures and rapid urbanization, yet no recent review has synthesized how these environmental factors are reshaping dengue dynamics in LMICs. METHODS: We conducted a rapid systematic review following a registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42025635982). Six databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health, SciELO, Global Index Medicus and Web of Science) were searched for peer-re

Distribution of the West Nile Virus vector, Culex pipiens, in mainland Portugal: A geospatial modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Culex pipiens, Portugal's most abundant mosquito, is a vector for several pathogens including the West Nile virus. Understanding its spatial distribution can contribute to vector-borne diseases control and public health planning, given Portugal's favourable climate. National-level data on its spatial distribution, especially in relation to climatic variables is limited. We aimed to predict the suitability of Culex pipiens distribution in mainland Portugal, considering climatic factors. METHODS: A maximum entropy (Maxent) model was applied, using presence records for adult and larv
