Wheel running from a juvenile age delays onset of specific motor deficits but does not alter protein aggregate density in a mouse model of Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder predominantly affecting the cerebral cortex and striatum. Transgenic mice (R6/1 line), expressing a CAG repeat encoding an expanded polyglutamine tract in the N-terminus of the huntingtin protein, closely model HD. We have previously shown that environmental enrichment of these HD mice delays the onset of motor deficits. Furthermore, wheel running initiated in adulthood ameliorates the rear-paw clasping motor sign, but not an accelerating rotarod deficit. RESULTS: We have now examined the effects of enhanced physical activi

Extensive immunolesions of basal forebrain cholinergic system impair offspring recognition in sheep.

The involvement of the basal forebrain cholinergic system has been extensively investigated in instrumental learning but little is known of its participation in social memory, especially in the memorization of individual traits of a conspecific. The present study tested in sheep its contribution to both instrumental learning and individual offspring recognition. Six weeks before parturition, ewes received injections of a specific cholinergic immunotoxin (ME20.4 IgG-saporin) into the lateral ventricles (150 microg) and in some cases additional immunotoxin injections into the nucleus basalis (11

Longitudinal associations between expressive suppression and psychological health: The moderating role of authenticity and the ambivalence over emotion expression.

Expressive suppression is defined as the inhibition of emotional display and has been consistently linked with poorer psychological health. However, little research has explored individual differences in individual-centered factors that may mitigate these negative health effects. The social-cognitive processing model (Lepore, 2001) suggests that restricting emotional expression leads to psychological maladjustment when individuals experience social constraints. Building on this theory, we contend that two individual-centered factors-low ambivalence over emotion expression (i.e., less internal

Making of a Synapse: Recurrent Roles of Drebrin A at Excitatory Synapses Throughout Life.

Mature excitatory synapses are composed of more than 1500 proteins postsynaptically and hundreds more that operate presynaptically. Among them, drebrin is an F-actin-binding protein that increases noticeably during juvenile synaptogenesis. Electron microscopic analysis reveals that drebrin is highly enriched specifically on the postsynaptic side of excitatory synapses. Since dendritic spines are structures specialized for excitatory synaptic transmission, the function of drebrin was probed by analyzing the ultrastructural characteristics of dendritic spines of animals with genetic deletion of

Twelve-month follow-up of parent-based child anxiety treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is an efficacious parent-based treatment for child anxiety disorders. Little is known about the maintenance of treatment gains following SPACE, and no comparative follow-up studies have been conducted. We address both gaps by examining child anxiety severity up to 12 months following SPACE and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). We also examine whether reductions in family accommodation of child anxiety are maintained through follow-up in both treatments. METHOD: Participants were 125 mother-child dyads enrolled in a rando

Neural responses to food-related stimuli following experimental sleep manipulation: A systematic review of task-based neuroimaging studies.

OBJECTIVE: Adequate sleep is essential for physiological, cognitive, and mental functioning. While epidemiological and behavioral studies show that sleep restriction or sleep deprivation is associated with altered responses to food stimuli, the neural mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. The preregistered systematic review synthesized evidence from task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging studies examining neural responses to food-related stimuli following experimental sleep manipulations, including sleep deprivation or sleep restriction. METHOD: Literature searches wer

Impact of the 2017 secured-prescription regulation of zolpidem on hypnotic dispensing in France: a nine-year interrupted time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: In April 2017, France required a secure prescription, normally reserved for narcotics, for all zolpidem prescribing, because of its misuse. Published evaluations covered the first years after the measure, before or at the start of the COVID-19 period. METHODS: Interrupted time series of national open reimbursement data (Médic'AM; all schemes, community pharmacies) from January 2015 to February 2026 (134 monthly points). Reimbursed boxes per day of zolpidem, zopiclone and all hypnotics combined were modelled by segmented regression with seasonality and Newey-West standard errors. T

Understanding temporal changes in intrinsic capacity: analysis of domain-specific intrinsic capacity using SHARE data.

Global population aging challenges acute, disease-centric healthcare models and highlights the need for functional markers of aging. The World Health Organization's intrinsic capacity (IC) framework, encompassing cognition, vitality, locomotion, psychological well-being, and sensory function, provides a multidimensional measure of functional reserve. However, most longitudinal studies have collapsed IC into a single score, limiting insight into domain-specific trajectories and interrelationships. In this longitudinal cohort study, we examined 7-year changes in composite and domain-specific IC

Frailty and 1-Year Prognosis of Patients With Ischemic Stroke: A Multicenter Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a multidimensional geriatric syndrome characterized by reduced physiological reserve and is consistently associated with adverse outcomes in cardiovascular diseases. Frailty has also been linked to poor short-term prognosis in cerebrovascular disease. However, its association with long-term functional recovery and stroke recurrence remains insufficiently established in large prospective cohorts. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using data from the Impairment of Cognition and Sleep Study of the China National Stroke Registry III. Frailty was assessed at baseline usin

Neural contributions to age-related handgrip weakness revealed by multi-finger force deficit and dual-task testing.

Handgrip strength (HGS) is recognized as the primary characteristic of sarcopenia. Low HGS is strongly associated with morbidity, disability, and mortality. However, the neural mechanisms underlying age-related declines in HGS have not been fully elucidated. The multi-finger force deficit (MFFD), which reflects the central nervous system's capacity to coordinate finger activation during a power grip, provides an innovative approach to assess these neural contributions. Prior MFFD studies have inferred neural contributions to grip force, but this assumes that multi-finger dynamometry captures c

"Yeah, it's biased, but … ": Recognition versus moral condemnation of bias across party lines.

Amid rising political polarization, derogatory rhetoric targeting social groups has become common and highly contested across party lines. These partisan divides are often attributed to disagreement about whether bias has occurred, and theories of social norms, harm-based moral judgment, and cognitive consistency suggest that recognizing bias should track moral condemnation. Yet other theories suggest that recognition and condemnation are psychologically distinct. We propose that, even when partisans similarly recognize explicit bias ("yeah, it's biased"), they may diverge in moral response ("

A theory-driven structural equation modeling approach to the behavioral inhibition and behavioral activation systems model of chronic pain: Evaluating the mediating role of self-regulatory and volitional abilities.

Objective: Gray's reinforcement sensitivity, describing elementary motivational systems that mediate cognitive-affective and behavioral responses to punishing (behavioral inhibition system [BIS]) and Rewarding (behavioral activation system [BAS]) stimuli, has been most widely applied in the study of the motivational underpinnings of pain-related responses. Empirical findings regarding the associations of BIS and BAS with pain-relevant clinical outcomes are inconsistent, however. Drawing on personality systems interaction theory, the present cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the mediati

Effects of virtual patient race and opioid misuse on physicians' opioid stewardship strategies and nonopioid treatments for pain.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to determine whether and how physicians' use of opioid stewardship (OS) strategies and nonopioid, multimodal treatments differed by patient race and prior opioid misuse behaviors for patients with chronic pain. METHOD: Physicians (N = 135) made pain care decisions for eight virtual patients with chronic pain who varied by race (Black, White) and prior opioid misuse behaviors (adherent, misuse). For each patient, physicians indicated their use of OS strategies (agonist medication, urine drug testing, prescription drug monitoring, opioid contract, and

Can adolescent hope buffer against the adverse effects of youth and parent cultural stress on Latinx youths' adjustment outcomes?

Latinx youth and their parents can experience cultural stress-a constellation of interrelated stressors Latinx youth and parents experience based on racism, xenophobia, and the navigation of bicultural contexts. Notably, cultural stress Latinx youth and parents experience can compromise the emotional (i.e., depressive symptoms and self-esteem) and behavioral (i.e., aggressive behavior, alcohol and tobacco use) well-being of youth. However, not all Latinx youth are adversely affected by cultural stress they or their parents experience, suggesting the presence of protective resiliency processes.

Does congruence between therapist and patient in session-by-session bond ratings predict change in symptoms?

OBJECTIVE: The working alliance is a robust predictor of psychotherapy outcomes, and recent theories suggest that congruence between therapist and patient perceptions of the alliance may further enhance outcomes. This study examined whether session-by-session congruence in emotional bond ratings predicted next-session symptom improvement. METHOD: Data were drawn from 2,575 patients (82,641 patient-by-session observations) receiving feedback-informed cognitive-behavioral therapy by 194 trainee therapists in a university outpatient clinic. Patients and therapists rated the emotional bond after

Modulation of gastric activity using appetizing and disgusting images.

Interoception is the nervous system's integration of internal bodily signals, including gastrointestinal inputs. This process is crucial for regulating homeostasis, cognition, and emotion and depends on bidirectional brain-body communication. Given recent evidence of brain-stomach synchronization, determining whether emotional images (e.g., appetizing and disgusting) alter gastric activity is important for characterizing gut-brain interactions. Using an electrogastrogram (EGG), we recorded the gastric myoelectric activity (i.e., stomach's intrinsic rhythmicity) of 46 subjects (mostly undergrad

Structural neuroanatomy of semantic retrograde memory in older adults.

Studies of brain lesions or volumes indicate that the integrity of medial and lateral temporal lobe structures is important for news event memory accuracy, but the relationship between cortical thickness and news event memory accuracy has not yet been investigated in older adults. In a mixed sample of 70 older adults with variable cognitive abilities but without dementia, we investigated the relationship between cortical volume, hippocampal volume, and cortical thickness with news event recognition memory accuracy across the entire adult lifespan using the Retrograde Memory News Events Test.
