EARLY DETECTION OF COGNITIVE DECLINE USING VOICE ASSISTANT COMMANDS.

Early detection of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) is critical in treating the progression of the disease. Previous studies have shown that ADRD can be detected and classified using machine learning models trained on samples of spontaneous speech. We propose using Voice-Assistant Systems (VAS), e.g., Amazon Alexa, to monitor and collect data from at-risk adults, and we show that this data can be used to achieve functional accuracy in classifying their cognitive status. In this paper, we develop multiple unique feature sets from VAS data that can be used in the training of mach

Interaction between neuronal encoding and population dynamics during categorization task switching in parietal cortex.

Primates excel at categorization, a cognitive process for assigning stimuli into behaviorally relevant groups. Categories are encoded in multiple brain areas and tasks, yet it remains unclear how neural encoding and dynamics support cognitive tasks with different demands. We recorded from parietal cortex during flexible switching between categorization tasks with distinct cognitive and motor demands and also studied recurrent neural networks (RNNs) trained on the same tasks. In the one-interval categorization task (OIC), monkeys rapidly reported their decisions with a saccade. In the delayed m

Who benefits from training in linguistic awareness in the first grade, and what components show training effects?

Who among first graders benefit from training in linguistic awareness, and what components of the linguistic awareness are most amenable to training effects? At the beginning of Grade 1 prospective at-risk readers (26 out of 117) were identified on the basis of very low phonological awareness. In the autumn term, they received practice in linguistic awareness. When compared to controls individually matched controls on phonological awareness, listening comprehension, and WISC-R scores, the intervention group showed a more rapid building-up of phonological awareness, especially phoneme-blending

[DGRW-update: neurology--from empirical strategies towards evidence based interventions].

Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and neuropathies are the most important diseases in neurological rehabilitation financed by the German Pension Insurance. The primary goal is vocational (re)integration. Driven by multiple findings of neuroscience research the traditional holistic approach with mainly empirically derived strategies was developed further and improved by new evidence-based interventions. This process had been, and continues to be, necessary to meet the health-economic pressures for ever shorter and more efficient rehab measures. Evidence-based inter

Eye-Tracking and Skin Conductance to Monitor Cognitive Task Engagement.

Neurofeedback is a promising technique for brain rehabilitation and cognitive enhancement; however, it suffers from an inefficacy problem, as more than a third of participants do not learn to regulate their own brain activity. Lack of task engagement, probably related to an inadequate difficulty level, has been proposed among the possible factors that can affect the learning process. Here, we explored the possibility of monitoring cognitive engagement using physiological signals through eye tracking and electrodermal activity. We recorded these signals while participants completed different ta

Modulation of frontal gamma oscillations improves working memory in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental disorder that is associated with cognitive deficits. Impairments in cognition occur early in the course of illness and are associated with poor functional outcome, but have been difficult to treat with conventional treatments. Recent studies have implicated abnormal neural network dynamics and impaired connectivity in frontal brain regions as possible causes of cognitive deficits. For example, high-frequency, dorsal-lateral prefrontal oscillatory activity in the gamma range (30-50 Hz) is associated with impaired working memory in individuals with schizoph

Individual differences in personality in laying hens are related to learning a colour cue association.

Personality can influence how animals perceive and learn cues. The behaviour and physiological responses animals show during stressful events is indicative of their personality. Acute induced stress prior to a cognitive test are known to affect the judgement of a stimulus, but personality of an individual could also affect learning of a specific cognitive paradigm. Here, we assessed if adult laying hens' behaviour and physiological responses, as indicators of their personality, were related to their cognitive performance. We assessed their behavioural responses to a tonic immobility test, an o

An evaluation of patient self-testing competency of prothrombin time for managing anticoagulation: pre-randomization results of VA Cooperative Study #481--The Home INR Study (THINRS).

Prior studies suggest patient self-testing (PST) of prothrombin time (PT) can improve the quality of anticoagulation (AC) and reduce complications (e.g., bleeding and thromboembolic events). "The Home INR Study" (THINRS) compared AC management with frequent PST using a home monitoring device to high-quality AC management (HQACM) with clinic-based monitoring on major health outcomes. A key clinical and policy question is whether and which patients can successfully use such devices. We report the results of Part 1 of THINRS in which patients and caregivers were evaluated for their ability to per

Simulation training for holistic and systematic health needs assessments of older adults: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: As more people age, healthcare professionals require skills in using tools for interprofessional, holistic health needs assessments to support aging in place. While simulation training is recognized to build professional skills, its application in training interprofessional teams by using tools to holistically assess and plan care for older adults at home remains limited. AIM: To explore healthcare professionals' perceptions of interprofessional simulation training in assessing the holistic health needs of older adults living at home (i.e., physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, be

Noninvasive BCI-based cognitive rehabilitation in poststroke cognitive impairment: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) significantly reduces quality of life and survival rates. Current interventions face challenges in efficacy and accessibility. Noninvasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technology may enhance neural plasticity and cognitive recovery through real-time neurofeedback, offering a safe and accessible approach for poststroke cognitive rehabilitation. This trial aims to evaluate the efficacy of BCI-based cognitive training and explore its neural mechanisms. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled, single-center trial will enrol…

A three-week mindfulness intervention on mental skills, internal-load regulation, and performance in youth swimmers: a randomized controlled trial.

This study examined whether a three-week mindfulness program integrated into swim training could enhance mental skills, stabilize internal-load responses, and affect short-term endurance performance in youth swimmers. Thirty trained swimmers (20 males, 10 females; aged 19.7 ± 1.7 years) were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG, n = 15) or a control group (CG, n = 15). The EG completed 12 pre-swim mindfulness sessions, each lasting 30–45 min and incorporating breathing regulation, body awareness, and attentional-focus exercises, while the CG followed standard training only. Pre- and

Neuroimaging-driven recommendation systems for personalized sports training and injury prevention.

Neuroimaging has become an essential tool in sports science, offering profound insights into brain function, cognitive-motor interactions, and injury mechanisms. Traditional neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), have significantly contributed to our understanding of brain plasticity and its role in athletic performance. However, these conventional approaches often face challenges, including low temporal resolution, sensitivity to motion artifacts, and difficulties in translating controlle

Science and medicine applied to soccer refereeing: an update.

Soccer referees are required to keep up with play at all times to ensure optimal positioning in making key decisions. While the physiological aspects of soccer refereeing have been extensively reviewed, other key areas of preparation and performance have yet to be considered in detail. We present a contemporary examination of methodological considerations for the interpretation of referees' match activities, the validation of fitness testing and training protocols, match and training injury profiles, and the understanding and development of perceptual-cognitive expertise. A referee covers appr

A deep learning approach for monitoring parietal-dominant Alzheimer's disease in World Trade Center responders at midlife.

Little is known about the characteristics and causes of early-onset cognitive impairment. Responders to the 2001 New York World Trade Center disaster represent an ageing population that was recently shown to have an excess prevalence of cognitive impairment. Neuroimaging and molecular data demonstrate that a subgroup of affected responders may have a unique form of parietal-dominant Alzheimer's Disease. Recent neuropsychological testing and artificial intelligence approaches have emerged as methods that can be used to identify and monitor subtypes of cognitive impairment. We utilized data from
