Recommendations for Improving Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies in Europe Using Healthcare Databases.

BACKGROUND: Although accessing administrative data in healthcare databases may be a more time-efficient and cost-effective method of conducting surveillance, there is evidence suggesting that administrative data alone are not sufficient for population-based surveillance of congenital anomalies. OBJECTIVE: To propose recommendations to maximise the potential use of healthcare databases for surveillance of congenital anomalies based on our data linkage experiences and results from the EUROlinkCAT study. METHODS: EUROlinkCAT is a population-based cohort study of 99,416 children with anomalies b

EndoCompass project: research roadmap for reproductive and developmental endocrinology.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine science remains underrepresented in European Union research programs despite the fundamental role of hormone health in human wellbeing. Analysis of the CORDIS database reveals a persistent gap between the societal impact of endocrine disorders and their research prioritization. At national funding level, endocrine societies report limited or little attention of national research funding towards endocrinology. The EndoCompass project-a joint initiative between the European Society of Endocrinology and the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology, aimed to identify and

Unlocking the Potential of Weakly Labeled Data: A Co-Evolutionary Learning Framework for Abnormality Detection and Report Generation.

Anatomical abnormality detection and report generation of chest X-ray (CXR) are two essential tasks in clinical practice. The former aims at localizing and characterizing cardiopulmonary radiological findings in CXRs, while the latter summarizes the findings in a detailed report for further diagnosis and treatment. Existing methods often focused on either task separately, ignoring their correlation. This work proposes a co-evolutionary abnormality detection and report generation (CoE-DG) framework. The framework utilizes both fully labeled (with bounding box annotations and clinical reports) a

Unsupervised segmentation of heart sounds from abrupt changes detection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Heart auscultation enables early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Automated segmentation of cardiograms into fundamental heart states can guide physicians to analyze the patient's condition more effectively. In this work, we propose an unsupervised method of segmentation into heart sounds and silences based on the detection of abrupt changes in the signal. METHODS: Our procedure involves two steps. First, the abrupt changes, which correspond to the beginning and end of the heart sounds, are localized. Heart sounds and silences are then identified by calculating

Rate of Subsequent Hallux Interphalangeal Joint Fusion After First Metatarsophalangeal Fusion: A National Database Study with Verified Continued Patient Enrollment.

BACKGROUND: The risk of symptomatic degeneration at the interphalangeal (IP) joint after arthrodesis of the hallux metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint remains undetermined and is a common question from patients considering the procedure. This study investigated the rate of subsequent hallux IP joint fusion after first MTP joint arthrodesis. METHODS: Patients who underwent hallux MTP joint arthrodesis were identified from a large national commercial insurance database (PearlDiver) by Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code. Patients who underwent first IP fusion were also identified. To ensure c

Benchmarking Laryngeal Neoplasm Segmentation: A Multicenter Dataset and an Effective Method.

While accurate and automatic Laryngeal Neoplasm Segmentation (LNS) can benefit the diagnosis and prevention of laryngeal cancers, existing LNS-related works are very limited due to the lack of public datasets. This paper conducts systematic research to take the research field a step further. Firstly, we create a multicenter LNS dataset, named as MLN-Seg. Collecting from four hospitals, it has 2,273 laryngeal images with a diversity in resolutions and modalities, where each image is pixel-wise annotated by experienced physicians. Secondly, considering the scarcity of LNS methods and similarity

Enhancing risk prediction base on health administrative data using high-dimensional prediction model.

OBJECTIVES: Health administrative datasets often do not contain important clinical variables for predicting the risk of medical outcomes. However, they often contain a wide range of health-care variables that can be used to develop a high-dimensional prediction model (hdPM) that compensates for the lack of clinical predictors. We aimed to compare the predictive performance of an hdPM with a conventional model that relies only on investigator-specified clinical predictors. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Using data on 2923 individuals diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), a Cox proportional hazards mode

View adaptive unified self-supervised technique for abdominal organ segmentation.

Automatic abdominal organ segmentation is an essential prerequisite for accurate volumetric analysis, disease diagnosis, and tracking by medical practitioners. However, the deformable shapes, variable locations, overlapping with nearby organs, and similar contrast make the segmentation challenging. Moreover, the requirement of a large manually labeled dataset makes it harder. Hence, a semi-supervised contrastive learning approach is utilized to perform the automatic abdominal organ segmentation. Existing 3D deep learning models based on contrastive learning are not able to capture the 3D conte

DeepCTG® 2.0: Development and validation of a deep learning model to detect neonatal acidemia from cardiotocography during labor.

Cardiotocography (CTG) is the main tool available to detect neonatal acidemia during delivery. Presently, obstetricians and midwives primarily rely on visual interpretation, leading to a significant intra-observer variability. In this paper, we build and evaluate a convolutional neural network to detect neonatal acidemia from the CTG signals during delivery on a multicenter database with 27662 cases in five centers, including 3457 and 464 cases of moderate and severe neonatal acidemia respectively (defined by a fetal pH at birth between 7.05 and 7.20, and lower than 7.05 respectively). Leveraging a realistic synthetic database to learn Shape-from-Shading for estimating the colon depth in colonoscopy images.

Colonoscopy is the choice procedure to diagnose, screening, and treat the colon and rectum cancer, from early detection of small precancerous lesions (polyps), to confirmation of malign masses. However, the high variability of the organ appearance and the complex shape of both the colon wall and structures of interest make this exploration difficult. Learned visuospatial and perceptual abilities mitigate technical limitations in clinical practice by proper estimation of the intestinal depth. This work introduces a novel methodology to estimate colon depth maps in single frames from monocular c

Embedding Tasks Into the Latent Space: Cross-Space Consistency for Multi-Dimensional Analysis in Echocardiography.

Multi-dimensional analysis in echocardiography has attracted attention due to its potential for clinical indices quantification and computer-aided diagnosis. It can utilize various information to provide the estimation of multiple cardiac indices. However, it still has the challenge of inter-task conflict. This is owing to regional confusion, global abnormalities, and time-accumulated errors. Task mapping methods have the potential to address inter-task conflict. However, they may overlook the inherent differences between tasks, especially for multi-level tasks (e.g., pixel-level, image-level,

One model to use them all: training a segmentation model with complementary datasets.

PURPOSE: Understanding surgical scenes is crucial for computer-assisted surgery systems to provide intelligent assistance functionality. One way of achieving this is via scene segmentation using machine learning (ML). However, such ML models require large amounts of annotated training data, containing examples of all relevant object classes, which are rarely available. In this work, we propose a method to combine multiple partially annotated datasets, providing complementary annotations, into one model, enabling better scene segmentation and the use of multiple readily available datasets. Global burden of bladder cancer mortality in 2020 and 2040 according to GLOBOCAN estimates.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, bladder cancer (BC) was the seventh most prevalent cancer in the world, with 5-year prevalence of more than 1.7 million cases. Due to the main risk factors-smoking and chemical exposures-associated with BC, it is considered a largely preventable and avoidable cancer. An overview of BC mortality can allow an insight not only into the prevalence of global risk factors, but also into the varying efficiency of healthcare systems worldwide. For this purpose, this study analyzes the national mortality estimates for 2020 and projected future trends up to 2040. MATERIALS AND ME

MA-MIL: Sampling point-level abnormal ECG location method via weakly supervised learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Current automatic electrocardiogram (ECG) diagnostic systems could provide classification outcomes but often lack explanations for these results. This limitation hampers their application in clinical diagnoses. Previous supervised learning could not highlight abnormal segmentation output accurately enough for clinical application without manual labeling of large ECG datasets. METHOD: In this study, we present a multi-instance learning framework called MA-MIL, which has designed a multi-layer and multi-instance structure that is aggregated step by step at different sc
