Sense of coherence, self-esteem, depression and hopelessness as correlates of reattempting suicide.

Sense of coherence (SOC) has been proposed as a psychological factor that predicts good health and positive adjustment. The three components of SOC: manageability, comprehensibility and meaning were assessed together with depression, hopelessness and self-esteem as factors predicting future suicidal ideation and behaviour in parasuicides. One hundred and fifty hospitalized parasuicides were evaluated on these measures and followed up after six months to determine their current level of suicidal ideation and whether they had been readmitted for a further attempt or killed themselves in the inte

Assessing psychological and physical abuse from children's perspective: Factor structure and psychometric properties of the picture-based, modularized child-report version of the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale - Revised (CTSPC-R).

Child victims' reports of psychological and physical abuse by caregivers are a fundamental source of information beyond official records and caregiver reports. However, few or no sensitive and age-appropriate child-report instruments exist that have undergone in-depth validity and reliability testing across a broad age-range. Our study addresses this gap by examining psychometric properties of a picture-based, modularized version of the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale (CTSPC-R), encompassing the maltreatment subtypes of psychological and physical abuse. A sample of 904 children and adolesc

Coverage Denied: Health Insurance Barriers to Gender-Affirming Care.

People who identify as transgender and non-binary (TNB) often experience higher rates of poverty, violence, suicide, unemployment, homelessness, discrimination, psychological distress, substance abuse, and HIV infection than people who do not identify as TNB, partly because of barriers to gender-affirming health care and supports. The current study builds on gender-affirming healthcare research by exploring health insurance-related barriers for TNB-identifying people. The study explored participants' health insurance barriers and how these barriers impeded gender-affirming care. Participants i…

Shame: An Emotion Needing Exceptional Interventions.

Shame can inflict deep and lasting psychological harm. However, its pervasive negative effects often go unrecognized by both patients and their providers, and thus, it may remain wholly unaddressed. Shame may be mistaken for guilt, embarrassment, or humiliation, but shame darkens patients' quality of life much more profoundly than these other emotions. For this reason, there is a greater need for providers to remain alert to cues that patients may feel shame and if they suspect this and are right, they may seek to help patients reduce their shame. This article discusses what shame is, how to d

Mental Health Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on College Students: A Literature Review with Emphasis on Vulnerable and Minority Populations.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted higher education worldwide, imposing strict isolation measures, transitioning learning online, and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. This literature review examines the pandemic's impact on the mental health of college students, with a focus on those belonging to minority groups, including racial, ethnic, migrant, gender, sexuality-based, and low-income populations. While elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness were observed across all students, findings indicate that LGBTQ+ and low-income students faced the hig

Patterns of Reentry Concerns Among Incarcerated People in Belgium: Insights From a Latent Class Analysis.

The transition from prison to the community is often marked by challenges across multiple life domains, underscoring the need for a multidimensional perspective on reentry. Although such challenges can result in concerns about reentry during incarceration, little is known about these concerns. This study uses survey data from incarcerated individuals (N = 716) across fifteen Flemish and Brussels prisons (Belgium) to examine the heterogeneity of reentry concerns from a multidimensional perspective. A Latent Class Analysis identified five distinct patterns: unconcerned (24.80%), subsistence-conc

Mental Health of Older Adults by Sexual Minority Status: Evidence From the 2021 National Health Interview Survey.

This study explored differences among older adults in mental health by sexual minority status. Data came from the 2021 U.S. National Health Interview Survey. The study sample included older adults (or those aged ≥50 years, N = 15,559), and of those, two percent (n = 380) self-identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB). Older LGB adults had significantly higher odds of reporting a diagnosis of depression and anxiety and experiencing serious psychological distress than older non-LGB adults. Additionally, older LGB adults reported higher odds of experiencing depression and anxiety more frequen

Facial expression recognition: A meta-analytic review of theoretical models and neuroimaging evidence.

Discrimination of facial expressions is an elementary function of the human brain. While the way emotions are represented in the brain has long been debated, common and specific neural representations in recognition of facial expressions are also complicated. To examine brain organizations and asymmetry on discrete and dimensional facial emotions, we conducted an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis and meta-analytic connectivity modelling on 141 studies with a total of 3138 participants. We found consistent engagement of the amygdala and a common set of brain networks across discret

Reliability and validity of the balance recovery confidence scale in persons with stroke.

BACKGROUND: Balance recovery confidence represents a salient psychological factor influencing fall risk and functional mobility. The perceived ability to regain balance following a destabilising event may vary substantially among individuals. The Balance Recovery Confidence (BRC) Scale was developed to quantify perceived ability to regain balance across a range of destabilising situations. However, its psychometric properties have not yet been established in persons with stroke. OBJECTIVES: To translate the BRC Scale into Thai and evaluate its reliability, validity, and ability to discriminat

Validation of the Arab Mental Health Continuum Short Form (AMHC-SF) in Oman: Psychometric properties and factorial structure.

BACKGROUND: The Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) is a widely used instrument designed to assess three dimensions of positive mental health: emotional, social, and psychological well-being. However, there is limited evidence regarding its validity within Arab populations. METHOD: This study aimed to validate the Arabic version of the MHC-SF (AMHC-SF) among a community-based sample in Oman. A total of 1,101 participants aged 18-65 years (M = 31.49, SD = 9.69) completed the questionnaire through an online survey. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were performed to examine factorial v

Reliability and Validity of the Serbian Version of the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Quality of Life Questionnaire (HSQoL-24).

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by painful nodules, abscesses, and sinus tracts in apocrine gland-rich areas, leading to significant impairment in patients' quality of life (QoL). Persistent symptoms affect physical functioning, psychological well-being, social interactions, and intimate relationships. Therefore, validated disease-specific instruments are essential for accurate QoL assessment in different populations. Objective: The aim of this study was to validate the Serbian version of the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Quality of Lif

Locomotor stimulant and drug discrimination effects of five synthetic cathinones in rodents.

Synthetic cathinones are synthesized as legal alternatives to methamphetamine, cocaine and MDMA, and can produce serious health risks. The DEA identified five synthetic cathinones of interest: N-ethylpentedrone, N-ethylheptedrone, N-butylhexedrone, 4-methylpentedrone, and 4-methyl-α-ethylaminopentiophenone (4-MEAP). These compounds were tested to determine their locomotor stimulant and psychostimulant-like discriminative stimulus effects. Locomotor activity was tested in male Swiss-Webster mice to identify behaviorally active dose ranges and time courses. Discriminative stimulus effects of the

"For It [My Status] to Be Known by Everyone … It Is Not Good": Experiences of and Responses to Stigma and Discrimination Among People on HIV Treatment in Urban Zimbabwe.

HIV-related stigma and discrimination remain pervasive despite dramatic improvements in the availability and accessibility of antiretroviral therapy (ART). We examined the experiences of HIV stigma and discrimination and coping strategies among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in urban Zimbabwe in 2018. We conducted eight focus group discussions, stratified by age and gender (women and men 18-29 years, women and men >29), as part of a discrete choice experiment on HIV treatment models. HIV-related stigma emerged as a key theme, with participants expressing the desire to be seen as "normal." Howe

Task functional networks predict individual differences in the speed of emotional facial discrimination.

Every individual experiences negative emotions, such as fear and anger, significantly influencing how external information is perceived and processed. With the gradual rise in brain-behavior relationship studies, analyses investigating individual differences in negative emotion processing and a more objective measure such as the response time (RT) remain unexplored. This study aims to address this gap by establishing that the individual differences in the speed of negative facial emotion discrimination can be predicted from whole-brain functional connectivity when participants were performing

Nicotine exposure leads to deficits in differential cued fear conditioning in mice and humans: A potential role of the anterior cingulate cortex.

Stress and anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are characterized by disrupted safety learning. Tobacco smoking has been strongly implicated in stress and anxiety disorder symptomatology, both as a contributing factor and as a vulnerability factor. Rodent studies from our lab have recently shown that acute and chronic nicotine exposure disrupts safety learning. However, it is unknown if these effects of nicotine translate to humans. The present studies addressed this gap by administering a translational differential cued fear conditioning paradigm to both mice and hum

Mouse pups lacking collapsin response mediator protein 4 manifest impaired olfactory function and hyperactivity in the olfactory bulb.

Members of the collapsin response mediator protein (CRMP) family are reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of various neuronal disorders, including schizophrenia and autism. One of them, CRMP4, is reported to participate in aspects of neuronal development, such as axonal guidance and dendritic development. However, no physiological or behavioral phenotypes in Crmp4 knockout (Crmp4-KO) mice have been identified, making it difficult to elucidate the in vivo roles of CRMP4. Focusing on the olfaction process because of the previous study showing strong expression of Crmp4 mRNA in the olfacto

Self-motion direction discrimination in the visually impaired.

Despite the close interrelation between vestibular and visual processing (e.g., vestibulo-ocular reflex), surprisingly little is known about vestibular function in visually impaired people. In this study, we investigated thresholds of passive whole-body motion discrimination (leftward vs. rightward) in nine visually impaired participants and nine age-matched sighted controls. Participants were rotated in yaw, tilted in roll, and translated along the interaural axis at two different frequencies (0.33 and 2 Hz) by means of a motion platform. Superior performance of visually impaired participants
