Thermostable Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes for High-Temperature Biomass Conversion: From Molecular Design to Process Integration.

High-temperature processing of carbohydrate-rich biomass, including starch liquefaction and lignocellulose saccharification, can improve sugar yields, reduce contamination risks, and facilitate integration with thermochemical pretreatments. However, the operational stability of native carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) at 60-90 °C remains a major bottleneck for efficient and economically viable biorefineries, and existing reviews rarely integrate multiscale molecular mechanisms with process-relevant engineering strategies. This review systematically examines the multiscale basis of thermost

Emergence of contagious cooperation in community-structured networks.

Multilevel sociality, in which large communities emerge from interconnected subgroups, is a hallmark of primate societies and a central focus of the social brain hypothesis. We investigate whether such organizational forms can, on their own, foster cooperation when defection is individually optimal and the population is initially dominated by defectors. Using the spatial Prisoner's Dilemma on community-structured networks, we derive analytical conditions under which cooperation, once present, spreads contagiously across communities without altering payoffs or invoking external enforcement. The

Characterisation of an oxygen-tolerant recombinant nitroreductase for development of an aryl amine biosynthesis platform using cofactor-regenerating crude extract system.

Biocatalytic reduction of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) to aryl amines offers a route for integrating pollutant transformation with the synthesis of important chemical intermediates under mild conditions, providing an alternative to energy- and resource-intensive conventional chemical reductions. However, practical deployment of nitroreductases is often limited by oxygen sensitivity, high cofactor cost, and inefficient progression beyond hydroxylamine intermediates. Here, we report the characterisation of a novel oxygen-tolerant nitroreductase (C_Ntr) from a Cupriavidus strain a3. Phylogeneti

Integrated Survival Assessment and mRNA/miRNA Transcriptomics Reveal Heat Stress Response and Recovery Mechanisms in Cultured Razor Clam Sinonovacula constricta.

Intertidal burrowing bivalves, such as razor clam Sinonovacula constricta, are economically significant aquaculture species in coastal China. However, they exhibit high susceptibility to heat stress under global warming, which poses a substantial challenge to aquaculture sustainability and production. While several studies have identified genes responsive to heat stress in S. constricta, the regulatory mechanisms and core networks underlying these responses remain poorly understood. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play a crucial role in gene regulation. To investigate the function of ncRNAs and their

Citrus sinensis zest-mediated silver nanoparticles for rapid dye removal and antimicrobial properties.

Growing interest in sustainable and renewable nanotechnology has accelerated the development of green synthesis strategies that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable. In this study, we report a simple, low-cost, and eco-conscious approach for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using an aqueous zest extract of Citrus sinensis (Cs), which naturally serves as both the reducing and stabilizing agent. The phytochemicals present in the extract-including ascorbic acid, phenolic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and polysaccharides-effectively reduce Ag+ ions to stable AgNPs. T

Immobilization of tryptophan synthase on a magnetic bead-T4 capsid biocarrier for multi-round biocatalysis producing high-value L-tryptophan analogs.

Enzyme immobilization is pivotal for industrial biocatalysis yet often suffers from activity loss, structural distortion, operational instability, and high production costs. This study presents a magnetic bead-T4 capsid biocarrier (MBTCB) platform for efficient immobilization of an engineered tryptophan synthase Pf0A9 to enable sustainable synthesis of high-value tryptophan analogs. Soc-fused Pf0A9 was immobilized onto T4 phage capsids via high-affinity Soc-capsid binding under mild physiological conditions, preserving native enzyme conformation, and combining with magnetic bead conjugation fo

CRISPR mediated PRRS resistant pigs: biological success, welfare implications, and ethical regulatory challenges for sustainable swine production.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) remains one of the most significant health and welfare challenges in global pig production. The disease is associated with substantial economic losses, impaired herd health, increased antimicrobial use, and ongoing animal welfare concerns. Despite widespread implementation of vaccination, biosecurity, and herd stabilization strategies, PRRS continues to persist endemically in many production systems, highlighting the need for additional disease-control approaches. Recent advances in genome editing have enabled the development of host-directe

Rethinking variety testing to recognise mixing ability: bridging breeding, policy, and practice in diversified agriculture.

Agricultural diversification through species mixtures offers proven ecological and agronomic benefits, from improved nutrient cycling and yield stability to enhanced resilience against pests, diseases, and climatic stresses. Yet, the widespread uptake of these systems remains constrained by a fundamental gap: the absence of information on variety suitability for intercropping. Under current legislation, variety testing frameworks are designed for pure stand cultivation, thereby discouraging breeders from selecting within and for species mixtures, let alone registering mixture-adapted varieties

Toward a Theory of Proactive Health-Oriented Livestock Production: A Testable Conceptual Framework for Alpine Pastoral Systems.

Livestock production must reconcile animal health, food safety, ecological limits, and farm viability. This narrative review proposes proactive health-oriented livestock production (PHLP) as a testable conceptual framework for alpine pastoral systems and as a step toward theory development, rather than as an already validated general theory. PHLP does not claim novelty for vaccination, nutrition, welfare, biosecurity, precision monitoring, or low-carbon practices considered separately. Its proposed contribution is a decision architecture that forecasts context- and stage-specific risk, detects

Influence of salt-tolerant medicinal herbs on soil geochemistry, nutrient cycling, and microbial communities in saline-alkali ecosystems of inner Mongolia.

Soil salinization poses a major threat to global food security and ecosystem stability. Phytoremediation using salt-tolerant, economically important plants offers a sustainable strategy for restoring degraded soils. This study evaluated the remediation potential of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and sour jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) in saline-alkaline soils of Inner Mongolia, China. Field experiments compared bare land with soils planted for one and two years. Two-year plantations significantly reduced soil pH (from 9.3 to 8.5-8.8) and electrical conductivity (from 128 to 67-74 μS/cm). Soil organic

Establishment of a low-cost photosynthesis measurement system based on a single-board microcomputer and CO2 sensors.

Leaf photosynthetic rate serves as a growth indicator in plant science; however, the high cost (exceeding USD 70,000) of traditional measurement system is the main concern when making photosynthesis measurements of interest to a wide range of users. Recently, the availability of inexpensive environmental sensors and single-board microcomputers has increased substantially. In this study, we selected CO2 sensors based on a comparative analysis of four cost-effective sensors. The economical K30 sensor demonstrated a superior response to CO2 fluctuations, compared to the other tested low-cost sens

Fluorides immobilization through calcium aluminate cement-based backfill: Accessing the detailed leaching characterization under torrential rainfall.

Urbanization and economic development have increased the demand for fertilizers to sustain food crop yields. Huge amounts of by-products, especially phosphogypsum (PG), are generated during the wet processing of rock phosphate to produce fertilizers. Chronic exposure to fluoride in phosphogypsum in groundwater as a result of the weathering of fluoride-containing waste poses a significant health risk to millions of people. We propose a method for using calcium aluminate cement (CAC) to remediate high fluoride contents in solid waste. Column leaching tests under harsh rainfall conditions confirm
