Respiratory and locomotor muscle blood flow measurements using near-infrared spectroscopy and indocyanine green dye in health and disease.

Measuring respiratory and locomotor muscle blood flow during exercise is pivotal for understanding the factors limiting exercise tolerance in health and disease. Traditional methods to measure muscle blood flow present limitations for exercise testing. This article reviews a method utilising near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in combination with the light-absorbing tracer indocyanine green dye (ICG) to simultaneously assess respiratory and locomotor muscle blood flow during exercise in health and disease. NIRS provides high spatiotemporal resolution and can detect chromophore concentrations. In…

Prediction of performance reduction in self-paced exercise as modulated by the rating of perceived exertion.

PURPOSE: Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) is a scale of exercise difficulty and has been hypothesized to be a regulator of work rate during self-pacing. The goal of this work was to develop a dynamic prediction of RPE and to characterize the control strategy employed to reduce work rate during self-paced exercise using RPE as feedback. METHODS: Training and test data were acquired from the literature to develop a linear regression of RPE as a function of four physiological variables: core temperature, mean-weighted skin temperature, metabolic rate, and integral of relative oxygen consumptio

Influence of aerobic fitness and body fatness on tolerance to uncompensable heat stress.

This study examined the independent and combined importance of aerobic fitness and body fatness on physiological tolerance and exercise time during weight-bearing exercise while wearing a semipermeable protective ensemble. Twenty-four men and women were matched for aerobic fitness and body fatness in one of four groups (4 men and 2 women in each group). Aerobic fitness was expressed per kilogram of lean body mass (LBM) to eliminate the influence of body fatness on the expression of fitness. Subjects were defined as trained (T; regularly active with a peak aerobic power of 65 ml x kg LBM(-1) x

Effects of a Phase IV Home-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation Program on Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Physical Activity.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally and sedentary lifestyle is one of the main risk factors. Home-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs appear to be effective to improve exercise tolerance. The aim of the study, therefore, was to evaluate the effects of a phase IV (maintenance) home-based CR program on cardiorespiratory fitness and daily physical activity of patients recovering from an acute myocardial infarction. METHODS: This pilot study, with a sub-group randomised controlled trial, included 32 individuals recovering from a myocardial infarction…

Exercise improves cardiac function and attenuates insulin resistance in Dahl salt-sensitive rats.

BACKGROUND: The development of heart failure (HF) secondary to hypertension is a complex process related to a series of physiological and molecular factors including glucose dysregulation. The overall objective of this study was to investigate whether exercise training could improve cardiac function and insulin resistance in a rat model of hypertensive HF. METHODS: Seven week old Dahl salt-sensitive rats received either 8% NaCl (n = 30) or 0.3% NaCl (n = 18) diet. After a 5-week diet, animals were randomly assigned to exercise training (treadmill running at 18 m/min, 5% inclination for 60 min

[Determination of the pre-clinical stage of circulatory insufficiency in mitral valve defect].

The determination of the value of the threshold physical exercise and of the central haemodynamic indices by means of radiocardiography permitted to prove the existence of a preclinical stage of circulatory insufficiency in patients with mitral valve disease. As early as at this stage the cardiac output is reduced at rest and the period of pulmonary circulation and filling of the left heart is increased. Under physical exercises the level of the threshold tolerance is decreased. Under such conditions the pre-clinical and Stage I of circulatory insufficiency can be easier differentiated by the

Effects of mirthful laughter on pain tolerance: A randomized controlled investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a debilitating condition that affects many people. Currently, there is no single treatment known to cure or assure relief from chronic pain. Accordingly, the management of patients' discomfort is an integral part of treating chronic pain. Such treatment, however, is not effective for many patients. We investigated whether mirthful laughter provided by comic relief can influence pain tolerance and muscle soreness in young healthy participants. METHODS: Forty participants underwent a randomized controlled cross-over designed experiment. Each participant was exposed

Analysis of a SNP linked to lactase persistence: An exercise for teaching molecular biology techniques to undergraduates.

Recent experimental evidence indicates that the ability of adults to tolerate milk, cheese, and other lactose-containing dairy products is an autosomal dominant trait that co-evolved with dairy farming in Central Europe about 7,500 years ago. Among persons of European descent, this trait is strongly associated with a C to T substitution at a polymorphic site 13,910 bp upstream of the lactase gene. This mutation results in the persistent expression of lactase into adulthood enabling individuals carrying a T(-13,910) allele to digest lactose as adults. In this report, we describe a laboratory ex

Characteristics and effectiveness of vasodilatory and pressor compensation for reduced relaxation time during rhythmic forearm contractions.

What is the central question of this study? Reduced relaxation time between contractions in exercise requires increased vasodilatation and/or pressor response to prevent hypoperfusion and potential compromise to exercise tolerance. However, it remains unknown whether and to what extent local vasodilatation and/or systemic pressor compensation occurs and whether the efficacy of compensation is exercise intensity dependent. What is the main finding and its importance? We demonstrate that in a forearm exercise model vasodilatory but not pressor compensation occurs and is adequate to prevent hypop…
