OBJECTIVE: Ice hockey players are at risk of a variety of injuries. In our investigation, we aimed to evaluate the types of facial fractures, injury mechanisms and need for surgical intervention in professional and recreational ice hockey players.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included all patients presenting to a tertiary trauma centre with any ice hockey-related facial fracture during the period from January 2013 to July 2020. The primary outcome variable was the need for surgical treatment, and the primary predictor variable was the injury mechanism. Demographic and clinic

Computed tomography is commonly used to evaluate patients with blunt facial trauma. With the high definition of the current scanners, even small fractures of the facial skeleton can be visualized. In complex midface injuries, it can be difficult for the radiologist to know which fractures are important to point out to the surgeon. An understanding of the anatomically relevant and surgically accessible craniofacial buttresses is critical for management of these injuries. Naso-orbitoethmoid fractures are classified according to the degree of injury to the medial canthal attachment. If the nasofr

Research over the last decade has confirmed that facial injuries caused by violence occur most frequently among young males, often under the influence of alcohol, and less frequently in women and children following domestic violence. Evidence of injuries may be used in court or in claims for compensation, and must be carefully documented. Facial asymmetry, deviation of the mandible in opening, altered occlusion and/or abrasions under the chin may be indications of jaw fractures; such patients are referred to oral surgery units for further treatment. Lacerations and ulceration in the oral mucou…

OBJECT: Injury of the facial nerve with resultant facial muscle paralysis may result in other significant complications such as corneal ulceration. To the authors' knowledge, neurotization to the facial nerve using the long thoracic nerve (LTN), a nerve used previously for neurotization to other branches of the brachial plexus, has not been explored previously.
METHODS: In an attempt to identify an additional nerve donor candidate for facial nerve neurotization, 8 adult human cadavers (16 sides) underwent dissection of the LTN, which was passed deep to the clavicle and axillary neurovascular

There are several surgical approaches for resection of parapharyngeal space (PPS) neoplasms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate local disease control, facial nerve injury, and need for mandibulotomy associated with resection of PPS neoplasms via the transcervical approach with submandibular gland excision. A retrospective chart review of 33 patients who underwent resection of a PPS neoplasm between October 1991 and July 2000 was performed. Of the 33 patients, 3 patients developed local recurrence after a median follow-up of 24 months. None of the patients experienced facial nerve paresi

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the technical and anatomical analysis and design of an osteocutaneous allograft transplant incorporating the donor max … the facial arterial system and its arcades. This presents a novel method for reconstructing massive facial injuries with significant involvement of the facial skeleton.

INTRODUCTION: Among maxillofacial surgeons, a general agreement exists that the therapeutic strategy for intracapsular condylar fractures is conservative, while the treatment of extracapsular fractures of the mandibular condyle is extremely controversial. The indications and choice of treatment are less than uniform, often relying on the surgeon's personal experience and beliefs. The literature increasingly suggests that the surgical management of these fractures is superior to conservative management in functional terms. Nonetheless, the indications for surgically treating condylar fractures

PURPOSE: Facial gunshot wounds can result in devastating functional and aesthetic consequences for patients. In an attempt to evaluate the management and outcome in these patients, a 4-year retrospective review was undertaken of all patients presenting with facial gunshot wounds at a level I trauma center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 121 patients were identified. Medical documentation could be obtained on 84 of those patients. The patients' maxillofacial injuries were treated by the 3 participating services: plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and otorhinolaryngology. The pa…

The facial nerve is one of the most commonly injured cranial nerves. Once injured, the effects on form, function, and psyche are profound. We review the anatomy of the facial nerve from the brain stem to its terminal branches. We also discuss the physical exam findings of facial nerve injury at various levels. Finally, we describe various reconstructive options for reanimating the face and restoring both form and function.

The marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve (MMB) is a surgically relevant extracranial branch of cranial nerve VII, vulnerable during submandibular, parotid, and cervicofacial procedures. Its relationship to the facial vessels and the inferior border of the mandible (IBM) is variable and has been studied for more than six decades. This review analyses the course of the MMB as it crosses the facial artery and vein, focusing on its vertical position relative to the IBM, together with branching patterns, fascial relationships, anastomoses, landmarks, injury, and recovery. The MMB usually

Introduction Facial nerve has the longest and complex course in its bony canal. The anatomical variations make the nerve prone to injury during mastoid surgeries. Having a thorough anatomical knowledge and its variations is must for the surgeons to avoid injury to this vital structure and for the safe surgery. The objective of the study was to describe the anatomical variations of intratemporal portion of facial nerve. Materials and methods The study was conducted in the department of otorhinolaryngology in the temporal bone dissection laboratory of a tertiary health care centre. Fifty wet tem

Cervical traction is a frequently used treatment in rehabilitation clinics for cervical spine problems. This modality works, in principle, by decompressing the spinal cord or its nerve roots by applying traction on the cervical spine through a harness placed over the mandible (Olivero et al., Neurosurg Focus 2002;12:ECP1). Previous reports on treatment complications include lumbar radicular discomfort, muscle injury, neck soreness, and posttraction pain (LaBan et al., Arch Phys Med Rehabil 1992;73:295-6; Lee et al., J Biomech Eng 1996;118:597-600). Here, we report the first case of unilateral

The pediatric facial skeleton has different characteristics when compared to the adult face, and fractures require modified treatment approaches. Nonoperative approaches to facial fracture management are preferred given future bony growth and development of the pediatric facial skeleton. Location of growth centers and active sutures are important in surgical decision-making, as facial fractures in children carry long-term functional sequelae. When operative interventions are indicated, key nuances set pediatric facial trauma apart from its adult counterpart. Several subsites of facial fracture

OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes of facial nerve repair or grafting following facial nerve-sacrificing procedures among patients treated with and without postoperative radiotherapy (RT).
DATA SOURCES: PubMed, OVID, Conference Papers Index, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov.
REVIEW METHODS: Databases were searched using terms including "facial nerve," "graft," "repair," and "radiotherapy." Abstracts mentioning facial nerve repair and evaluation of facial nerve function were included for full-text review. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine which prodromal symptoms frequently occur in patients with Bell's palsy and evaluate the association between these symptoms and clinical severity of paresis or the severity of facial nerve injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 86 patients with Bell's palsy between August 2018 and April 2020. Severity levels of Bell's palsy and facial nerve damage were evaluated using the House-Brackmann (H-B) grading scale and electrodiagnostic study, respectively. Subsequently, a self-reported questionnaire on prodromal symptoms was administered. To assess

Facial vascularized composite allotransplantation has emerged as a groundbreaking reconstructive solution for patients with severely disfiguring facial injuries. The authors report on the first Canadian face transplant. A 64-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound, which resulted in extensive midface bony and soft-tissue damage involving the lower two-thirds of the face. In May of 2018, he underwent a face transplant consisting of Le Fort III and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies in addition to skin from the lower two-thirds of the face and neck. Virtual surgical planning was used to fabrica…
