Risk factors for hypothermia on trauma center arrival in injured children.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric trauma patients presenting with abnormal body temperature, especially hypothermia, are at higher risk for poor outcomes. However, risk factors for hypothermia in injured children remain unclear, and temperature data may be inconsistently documented. This study aimed to identify predictors of hypothermia and missing temperature documentation among pediatric trauma patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of trauma patients <18 years of age using the 2021-2023 Trauma Quality Improvement Program dataset. Patients were categorized by arrival temperature:

What Factors Influence Hospital Admission for Mandible Fractures in Emergency Departments Across the United States?

BACKGROUND: Facial trauma surgeons consulted by emergency departments (EDs) for mandible fractures must decide whether hospital admission is warranted. While admission may allow for closer monitoring and expedited surgery, many patients present with clinically stable injuries for which outpatient management is feasible. PURPOSE: This study aims to identify biological, situational, and socioeconomic predictors of admission for mandible fractures presenting to EDs across the United States. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND SAMPLE: This was a retrospective cohort study of the 2022 Nationwide Emergency

Homicides among people with disabilities, United States, 2003-2022.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities (PwD) are at an increased risk of experiencing nonfatal violence; however, the risk of fatal violence victimization (i.e., homicide) among this population is less well established. METHODS: We used National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) data for homicide victims with disabilities for 2003 to 2022 in 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. NVDRS is a surveillance system that collects data on violent deaths, linking information from death certificates, coroner or medical examiner records, and law enforcement reports. NVDRS does not cur

Risk of Suicide After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Nationwide Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although around one-third of survivors of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) suffer from anxiety and depression, studies focusing on suicide risk after aSAH are lacking. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether survivors of aSAH have an elevated risk of suicide death in comparison with the general population. METHODS: Using 2 externally validated nationwide registers (Care Register for Health Care and Cause of Death Register), we identified all ≥15-year-old survivors of aSAH (alive 30 days after hospital admission) in Finland during 1998-2017 and followed these

Violence survivors' quality of life assessment: An observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Revised Trauma Quality of Life (RT-QOL) measurement among violence survivors is challenging because of loss to follow-up. This study evaluated RT-QOL instrument completion during follow-up phone calls after hospital discharge and assessed if time to follow-up call was associated with instrument completion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an observational cohort study of intentional interpersonal violence survivors treated at a Level 1 urban trauma center from March 2018-April 2024. Depression (Beck's Depression Inventory II), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Breslau Post Traumati

Characterizing emergency department surgical airway placement in the setting of trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Airway management is a key intervention during the resuscitation of critically ill trauma patients. Emergency surgical airway (ESA) placement is taught as a backup option when endotracheal intubation (ETI) fails. We sought to (1) describe the incidence of the emergency department (ED) ESA, (2) compare ESA versus ETI-only recipients, and (3) determine which factors were associated with receipt of an ESA. METHODS: We searched within the Trauma Quality Improvement Program datasets from 2017 to 2022 for all emergency department surgical airway placement and/or endotracheal intubatio

Fatalities Involving Khat in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, 2018 to 2021.

Interpreting fatalities involving khat is challenging due to a lack of data on cathinone and cathine reference concentrations in postmortem tissues. This study investigated the autopsy findings and toxicological results of fatalities involving khat in Saudi Arabia's Jazan region from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021. All confirmed cathine and cathinone results in postmortem blood, urine, brain, liver, kidney, and stomach samples were recorded and analyzed. Autopsy findings and the manner and cause of death of the deceased were assessed. Saudi Arabia's Forensic Medicine Center investigated 65

Utility of the material community deprivation index as a metric to identify at-risk children for severe traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality with lasting effects including neurological deficits and psychological comorbidities. Recent studies have shown that social determinants of health are key factors that impact clinical outcomes in other pediatric traumatic injuries, suggesting that these health disparities may have a significant impact on patients sustaining TBI as well. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively review a cohort of pediatric patients diagnosed with TBI and elucidate the relationships among socioeconomic dep

Association between neighborhood safety and overweight status among urban adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood safety may be an important social environmental determinant of overweight. We examined the relationship between perceived neighborhood safety and overweight status, and assessed the validity of reported neighborhood safety among a representative community sample of urban adolescents (who were racially and ethnically diverse). METHODS: Data come from the 2006 Boston Youth Survey, a cross-sectional study in which public high school students in Boston, MA completed a pencil-and-paper survey. The study used a two-stage, stratified sampling design whereby schools and then

[Risk factors for secondary retinal detachment after extraction of intraocular foreign bodies].

BACKGROUND: Better identification of patients at risk for retinal detachment after intraocular foreign body removal would guide management as well as help prevent this complication. We performed a study to identify risk factors for secondary retinal detachment in eyes with retained intraocular foreign bodies. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 102 consecutive patients (95 males and 7 females with a mean age of 31.6 years) seen between 1990 and 1995 at one ophthalmology service for intraocular foreign body after penetrating ocular injury. All eyes underwent primary surgical repair and foreign

Management of shotgun injuries to the pelvis and lower genitourinary system.

OBJECTIVES: Shotgun injuries are rare, with the extent of injury best determined at time of surgical exploration. There are no defined workup or management guidelines for patients with shotgun injuries to the genitourinary system. Injuries are usually treated on an individual basis. This study was conducted to determine the management and extent of genitourinary tract injuries in 10 patients with shotgun injuries to the pelvis during a 6-year interval. METHODS: Between September 1990 and December 1996, 140 patients were treated for firearm injuries to the lower genitourinary tract, of which 1
