Eroding the foundation: health and social needs of adult SNAP participants in an era of policy change.

In 2025, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was at the center of policy debate. SNAP-specific provisions within the "One B … poor health status, inability to see a doctor because of cost, and health-related social needs (eg, food insecurity, inability to pay bills, lack of reliable transportation), conflicting with some public perceptions of participant characteristics. Changes in health-related social needs and in depression and anxiety symptoms in Massachusetts low-income, community health center patients: an observational cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: This observational cohort study examined relationships between changes in health-related social needs (HRSN) and mental health symptoms. METHODS: A prospective cohort of adult community health center patients in Boston, Massachusetts completed surveys at baseline and 3-year follow up (LiveWell study, 2020-2024). Changes in HRSNs were categorized as decreased, unchanged, or increased based on the cumulative change in three domains: food insecurity, housing instability, and financial stress. Primary outcomes were changes in depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-8) and anxiety (Gen…

Media framing of agricultural technology adoption in developing countries: Evidence from Juncao technology news coverage.

Juncao technology, a key agricultural technology innovation for Sustainable Development Goals, is praised for boosting agricultural yields, … ltural production and economic gains. Negative emotions target existing challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, and environmental degradation rather than Juncao itself, positioning the technology as a solution. These findings demonstrate that emotional framing plays a key role in shaping perceived advantages and fostering adoption of technology.

Renal proteomics of male offspring exposed to maternal protein restriction: molecular, epigenetic, and nephron-specific signatures of metabolic programming.

Chronic kidney disease is an increasing global public health concern, and the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept proposes that adverse conditions during critical developmental windows predispose offspring to chronic disorders later in life. Maternal protein restriction (MPR), a well-established experimental model reflecting food insecurity, has been shown to impair nephrogenesis and promote long-term renal dysfunction. In this study, we investigated renal metabolic-epigenetic programming induced by gestational and lactational MPR in post-weaning male rats using a globa…

Individual Contributions of Adverse Childhood Experiences to Adolescent Substance Use.

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with adolescent substance use. However, the influence of individual ACEs after controlling for concurrent ACEs is understudied. Methods: Using longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 3200), we evaluated binary logistic models to test associations from 11 individual ACEs at ages 3-9 (physical abuse; emotional abuse; neglect; housing instability; food insecurity; community violence; parental depression, problematic substance use, intimate partner violence [IPV], incarceration, and death) to adole…

Household-level factors and ART adherence among people living with HIV in Cape Town, South Africa: a qualitative study.

South Africa has the largest ART programme in the world. ART is provided within the context of the universal test and treat strategy. Sustai … tated adherence. Open HIV dialogue fostered positive health behaviours and ART adherence. Household food insecurity, multimorbidity and busy work schedules both in the absence of household social support hindered ART adherence. Given the significant role of household support, particularly from mothers, in facilitating ART adherence, health facility programmes sho …

Centering Multilingual Patient Voices in the Co-Design of a Health-Related Social Needs Screening Tool in an Urban Safety-Net Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Health-related social needs (HRSNs) such as housing instability, food insecurity, and transportation barriers are associated with adverse health outcomes and disproportionately affect racially and ethnically marginalized populations. Despite federal mandates and increased investments in screening infrastructure, HRSN screening tools are often implemented without sufficient patient input, potentially reducing engagement and reinforcing stigma. OBJECTIVE: To describe a community-participatory process evaluation to co-design a HRSN screening tool with patients in a linguistically div…

Impact of nurse home visiting on take-up of social safety net programs in a Medicaid population.

UNLABELLED: Childhood poverty can affect health and development across the life course. Access to social safety net programs may alleviate poverty-related hardships like food insecurity among low-income families, yet many eligible households do not enroll. We used a randomized controlled trial (n = 5670) to evaluate the impact of the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) home visiting program during pregnancy and the first 2 years after delivery on take-up of social programs including the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistan…

Associations Between Mothers' COVID-Related Perceived Stress and Children's Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms in Peru.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, parents in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) faced greater income loss, high fatality rates, and less accessible healthcare. Peru reported the highest COVID-19 mortality rate globally; yet no known study in Peru has examined the unique impact of COVID-related stressors on parents or their children's behavioral health. Cross-sectional data were drawn from 672 mothers (mean age = 32.5) on COVID-related perceived stress, as part of a longitudinal birth cohort. Factor analyses of COVID-related perceived stress identified three domains which were used in multiva

Mixed-Methods Analysis of Community-Building Activities in Minnesota Hospitals.

Nonprofit hospitals are required to annually report spending on community-building activities (CBAs) to the Internal Revenue Service. CBAs are actions that address root causes of community health problems such as housing and food insecurity. While addressing these issues is important regardless of location, CBA spending could particularly benefit rural residents who, on average, experience worse health outcomes. However, national CBA spending has historically been extremely low, potentially due to confusion surrounding reporting. This explanatory mixed-methods study sought to illuminate nonpro…

An Ethnographic Assessment of COVID-19‒Related Changes to the Risk Environment for People Who Use Drugs in Tijuana, Mexico.

Objectives. To characterize the effects of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic on the risk environment of people who use drugs (PWUD) in Tijuana, Mexico. Methods. We used intensive participant-observation ethnography among street-based PWUD and key informants, such as frontline physicians and harm reductionists. Results. PWUD described an unprecedented cessation of police violence and extortion during the initial pandemic-related lockdown, though this quickly reversed and police violence worsened. Government-provided housing and medical treatment with methadone were temporarily provided to PWUD

Latent Classes of Polysubstance Use and Associations with HIV Risk and Structural Vulnerabilities among Cisgender Women Who Engage in Street-Based Transactional Sex in Baltimore City.

We describe patterns of polysubstance use and associations with HIV risk-related behaviors among women engaged in street-based transactional sex, an understudied yet important population and area of research. This sample was restricted to cisgender women who reported drug use (n = 244) in the baseline of the longitudinal SAPPHIRE cohort study. Latent class analysis (LCA) was conducted using drug use measures (route of administration (injection/non-injection); type of drug (specific opioids, stimulants)) and selection based on fit statistics and qualitative interpretation of the classes. Polysu
