Successful Object Encoding Induces Increased Directed Connectivity in Presymptomatic Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies report increases in neural activity in brain regions critical to episodic memory at preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in AD studies, given its non-invasiveness and low cost, there is a need to translate the findings in other neuroimaging methods to EEG. OBJECTIVE: To examine how the previous findings using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at preclinical stage in presenilin-1 E280A mutation carriers could be assessed and extended, using EEG and a connectivity approach. METHODS: EEG signal

Resting-state abnormalities in amnestic mild cognitive impairment: a meta-analysis.

Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). As no effective drug can cure AD, early diagnosis and intervention for aMCI are urgently needed. The standard diagnostic procedure for aMCI primarily relies on subjective neuropsychological examinations that require the judgment of experienced clinicians. The development of other objective and reliable aMCI markers, such as neural markers, is therefore required. Previous neuroimaging findings revealed various abnormalities in resting-state activity in MCI patients, but the findings have been inconsisten

Imaging of autoimmune encephalitis--Relevance for clinical practice and hippocampal function.

The field of autoimmune encephalitides associated with antibodies targeting cell-surface antigens is rapidly expanding and new antibodies are discovered frequently. Typical clinical presentations include cognitive deficits, psychiatric symptoms, movement disorders and seizures and the majority of patients respond well to immunotherapy. Pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical features are increasingly recognized and indicate hippocampal dysfunction in most of these syndromes. Here, we review the neuroimaging characteristics of autoimmune encephalitides, including N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)

Neuroimaging and clinical neurophysiology in cluster headache and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias.

Clinical neurophysiology and neuroimaging are two non-invasive approaches used to investigate the pathophysiological basis of primary headaches, including cluster headache (CH) and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs). Modern neuroimaging has revolutionized our understanding of the pathophysiology of primary headaches, and of TACs in particular, focusing on a cerebrovascular dysfunction hypothesis toward a central triggering cause. The introduction of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), and voxel-based morphometry has allowed us new

Structural-Functional Dissociation in TBI Hemiplegia: Meridian-Sinew Therapy Promotes Motor Recovery Despite Corticospinal Tract Damage-A Case Report.

This study presents neuroimaging analysis of a 31-year-old male patient with hemiplegia secondary to severe traumatic brain injury who was treated with an external therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) called meridian-sinew therapy. The patient exhibited complete right-sided limb paralysis following trauma, with full muscle strength recovery after therapy. Serial diffusion tensor imaging evaluations revealed persistently reduced fractional anisotropy values in the left corticospinal tract (CST.L) below the normal range posttreatment, indicating a structure-function decoupling phenomeno

Exploring Complex Genetic Mechanisms in Brain Imaging Genetics via a New Multi-Task Learning Method.

Brain imaging genetics generally combines genotype data with brain structure and functional measures to investigate the genetic basis of neurological disorders. Multimodal brain imaging data carry different but complementary information, which can clearly measure the same brain. Multi-task sparse canonical correlation analysis (MTSCCA) is often used to analyze the bi-multivariate correlation between genotype data and multimodal imaging features; however, it lacks the capacity to identify class-specific biomarkers and to deeply capture complex genetic mechanisms. In this paper, a linear discrim

A Case of Early-Onset VCP-Related Frontotemporal Dementia: Insights from Neuroimaging and Genetic Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by focal neuronal loss in the frontal and temporal cortices. Although microtubule-associated protein tau, granulin, and C9orf72 mutations are common in behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), there are also less common variants. This case highlights a 48-year-old man with a diagnosis of bvFTD with valosin-containing protein (VCP) mutation based on comprehensive clinical, genetic, and neuroimaging findings. METHODS: The patient underwent neurological, psychiatric, and neuropsychological assessments, along with magn

Neuroimaging and machine learning fusion for improved brain tumor diagnosis and prognosis.

Brain diseases, including tumors, along with mental and neurological disorders, pose a substantial threat to millions of individuals worldwide. Doctors use both structural and functional neuroimaging methods for diagnosing these diseases. Specialist doctors often combine Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with other neuroimaging techniques to enhance the detection and identification of brain diseases in clinical practice. This is crucial because these modalities give different information that supplement each other, hence enhancing accurate diagnosis. This study proposes a fusion approach integr…

Recollection of verbal materials engages the default mode network more strongly than recollection of visual materials: An fMRI meta-analysis.

Functional neuroimaging studies consistently show that episodic recollection engages the default mode network (DMN), yet the extent to which this engagement varies with the representational content of retrieved information remains unclear. The present meta-analysis examined whether recollection of verbal and visual materials differentially recruits the DMN. Twenty-four verbal and 19 visual studies were included; recollection was operationalized using subjective measures, and network correspondence was assessed using the Yeo 17-network parcellation. Both forms of recollection engaged the DMN, b…

Advanced neuroimaging in precision neurology: Tools, trends, and translational impact.

Advances in neuroimaging are revolutionizing the landscape of precision neurology by enabling high-resolution, multimodal visualization of brain structure, function, and pathology. As traditional, symptom-based frameworks fall short in capturing the biological complexity of neurodegenerative diseases, imaging modalities such as structural MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, functional MRI, PET, and hybrid PET/MRI have emerged as essential tools for early diagnosis, patient stratification, and therapeutic monitoring. These technologies not only reveal hallmark features like hippocampal atrophy and d

Neural Synchrony and Consumer Behavior: Predicting Friends' Behavior in Real-World Social Networks.

The endogenous aspect of social influence, reflected in the spontaneous alignment of behaviors within close social relationships, plays a crucial role in understanding human social behavior. In two studies involving 222 human subjects (Study 1: n = 175, 106 females; Study 2: n = 47, 33 females), we used a longitudinal behavioral study and a naturalistic stimuli neuroimaging study to investigate the endogenous consumer behavior similarities and their neural basis in real-world social networks. The findings reveal that friends, compared with nonfriends, exhibit higher similarity in product evalu

Vascular dementia subtypes, pathophysiology, genetics, neuroimaging, biomarkers, and treatment updates along with its association with Alzheimer's dementia and diabetes mellitus.

Dementia is a chronic progressive cognitive decline illness that results in functional impairment. Vascular dementia (VaD), second only to Alzheimer's disease (AD), is one of the most prevalent forms of dementia in the elderly (aged over 65 years), with a varied presentation and unpredictable disease development caused by cerebrovascular or cardiovascular illness. To get a better understanding of the changes occurring in the brain and to drive therapy efforts, new biomarkers for early and precise diagnosis of AD and VaD are required. In this review, Firstly, we describe the subtypes of vascula

A meta-analysis on neural changes of cognitive training for mental disorders in executive function tasks: increase or decrease brain activation?

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is often found in patients with psychiatric disorders, and cognitive training (CT) has been shown to help these patients. To better understand the mechanisms of CT, many neuroimaging studies have investigated the neural changes associated with it. However, the results of those studies have been inconsistent, making it difficult to draw conclusions from the literature. Therefore, the objective of this meta-analysis was to identify consistent patterns in the literature of neural changes associated with CT for psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We searched for cogni

Internal Consistency of Sway Measures via Embedded Head-Mounted Accelerometers: Implications for Neuromotor Investigations.

Accelerometers are being increasingly incorporated into neuroimaging devices to enable real-time filtering of movement artifacts. In this study, we evaluate the reliability of sway metrics derived from these accelerometers in a standard eyes-open balance assessment to determine their utility in multimodal study designs. Ten participants equipped with a head-mounted accelerometer performed an eyes-open standing condition on 7 consecutive days. Sway performance was quantified with 4 standard metrics: root-mean-square (RMS) acceleration, peak-to-peak (P2P) acceleration, jerk, and ellipse area. In

A guide for the use of fNIRS in microcephaly associated to congenital Zika virus infection.

Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is characterized by changes in cranial morphology associated with heterogeneous neurological manifestations and cognitive and behavioral impairments. In this syndrome, longitudinal neuroimaging could help clinicians to predict developmental trajectories of children and tailor treatment plans accordingly. However, regularly acquiring magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has several shortcomings besides cost, particularly those associated with childrens' clinical presentation as sensitivity to environmental stimuli. The indirect monitoring of local neural activity by n

Asymmetry in the Central Nervous System: A Clinical Neuroscience Perspective.

Recent large-scale neuroimaging studies suggest that most parts of the human brain show structural differences between the left and the right hemisphere. Such structural hemispheric asymmetries have been reported for both cortical and subcortical structures. Interestingly, many neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders have been associated with altered functional hemispheric asymmetries. However, findings concerning the relation between structural hemispheric asymmetries and disorders have largely been inconsistent, both within specific disorders as well as between disorders. In the present
