Two to four percent of the population carry meningococcus in the nasopharynx. Pharyngeal infections may be the entry point for blood-borne metastatic lesions throughout the body. Primary infections in other tissues are rare, and proof of transmission from a known carrier to a specific patient is uncommon. We report a primary infection of the urethra with the meningococcus in a heterosexual male contracted during an act of fellatio.

Cases of sexual reassignment in classical antiquity, namely a female-to-male gender change occurring after childhood, are described in the literature. Textual evidence concerning these cases of androgynism and their symbolism as well as a comprehensive scholar analysis is provided in the present study. Μedical interpretation of these cases covers the entire spectrum of differential diagnosis of heterosexual puberty in pseudohermaphrodites characterized by genital ambiguity.

We describe a case of a heterosexual HIV-negative man treated for primary syphilis with oral doxycycline in accordance with Clinical Effectiveness Group guidelines for treatment of early syphilis. Following an initial adequate response, he developed secondary syphilis three months later. We discuss the most likely cause of this relapse and the significance of such cases in the context of an outbreak of syphilis.

This study explored how young heterosexual men understand and apply sexual consent, especially when it is ambiguous. Through qualitative interviews, we examined their definitions of consent, views on verbal consent-seeking, and decision-making processes. Three findings emerged. This article reviews the use of combination emtricitabine (FTC)/tenofovir as preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV-negative patients at high risk of acquiring HIV, including heterosexual men and women, men who have sex with men, and IV drug users. When used with classic prevention strategies such as condoms, PrEP has been found effective in reducing the risk of HIV transmission.

A patient with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis became infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through heterosexual transmission. After the primary phase of the HIV infection, persistent lymphadenopathy, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia developed. Over the ensuing 3 years, the signs and symptoms of inflammatory polyarthritis completely disappeared, and severe Sjögren's syndrome developed. HIV and its associated immune dysfunction may be responsible for these events.
