When hope is lost.

Rehabilitation Medicine and Palliative medicine have much in common as both specialties deal with loss and impending loss related to incurable medical conditions. Significant losses are encountered by patients in both rehabilitation and palliative care settings, and often threaten quality of life, hopefulness, and resiliency. The losses are related to what the patient has identified as self. In this article the author suggests a way of approaching loss and suffering that incorporates, mindfulness, Disidentification and Ego-State work to help preserve a sense of self that is not identified with

The eye-roll sign and the PAS dissociation scale.

In the past decade we have seen many new articles devoted to the study of dissociation and its implications in health and illness. The area of dissociative disorders received special attention with many authors pointing out the probability that dissociative disorders may, in fact, be much more pervasive than used to be thought. The need for a reliable measurement of dissociation has become more acute. This paper reports the results of a study comparing the Perceptual Alteration Scale (PAS), a behavioral scale measuring dissociation capacity, with Spiegel's Eye-Roll Sign (ERS) a postulated biol

Historical perspectives on music as a cause of disease.

The relationship between music and medicine is generally understood in the benign context of music therapy, but, as this chapter shows, ther … fluence. It was often linked to fears about sexuality, female gynecological health, and theories of hypnosis and degeneration. In the twentieth century, the debate on the medical perils of the wrong kinds of music became overtly politicized in Germany and the Soviet Union. Likewise, the opponents of jazz, particularly in the United States, often turned to …

Neuropathic Pain Related with Spinal Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Systematic literature review. To review the evidence from high-quality studies regarding the treatment of neuropathic pain originating specifically from spinal disorders. In general, treatment guidelines for neuropathic pain cover all its various causes, including medical disease, peripheral neuropathy, and cancer. However, the natural history of neuropathic pain originating from spinal disorders may differ from that of the pain originating from other causes or lesions. An expert research librarian used terms related to neuropathic pain and spinal disorders, disc herniation, stenosis, and spin

Supportive care interventions in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AbstractThere is no comprehensive synthesis of supportive care interventions for patients with hematologic malignancies receiving transplantation and cellular therapies (TCTs). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to characterize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of TCT supportive care interventions and examine effects on patient-reported outcomes (PROs). We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0. Hypnotic-oriented counseling for ambiguous loss in college students.

Ambiguous loss involves uncertainty regarding the physical or psychological presence of a significant person and limited opportunities for clear confirmation or closure. Such uncertainty may contribute to persistent emotional distress, difficulty adapting, and reduced psychological well-being. This study examined the preliminary effectiveness of a structured, five-session Hypnotic-Oriented Counseling intervention for reducing psychological reactions associated with ambiguous loss and enhancing psychological well-being among college students. Employing an A-B-A single-case experimental design,

Anxiety and the Wounded Self.

The self-wounds model of anxiety disorders based on the work of Wolfe (2005, 2006) is delineated here. The focal point of this model is the concept of wounded self or early unresolved emotional injuries. According to this view, anxiety disorders represent a chronic struggle with painful experiences. These emotional experiences are driven by two interrelated layers of psychological processes which arise from the wounded self. While the first layer of this process entails conscious awareness of symptoms resulting from cognitive distortions, the second layer comprises implicit or unconscious inte

The present study examined both quantitative and qualitative hypnotizability differences among four psychiatric patient groups (dissociative disorder (n = 17), schizophrenic (n = 13), mood disorder (n = 14), and anxiety disorder (n = 14) patients), and normals (college students (n = 63)). Dissociative disorder patients earned significantly higher corrected total scores on the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (mean = 7.94), than all other groups. Likewise, dissociative disorder patients initially recalled significantly fewer items when the posthypnotic amnesia suggestion was in ef

Neurophysiological Mechanisms Related to Pain Management in Bone Tumors.

BackgroundPrimary and metastatic bone tumor incidence has increased in the previous years. Pain is a common symptom and is one of the most important related factors to the decrease of quality of life in patients with bone tumor. Different pain management strategies are not completely effective and many patients afflicted by cancer pain cannot be controlled properly. In this sense, we need to elucidate the neurophysiology of cancer-induced pain, contemplating other components such as inflammation, neuropathies and cognitive components regarding bone tumors, and thus pave the way for novel thera

EULAR revised recommendations for the management of fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: The original European League Against Rheumatism recommendations for managing fibromyalgia assessed evidence up to 2005. The paucity of studies meant that most recommendations were 'expert opinion'. METHODS: A multidisciplinary group from 12 countries assessed evidence with a focus on systematic reviews and meta-analyses concerned with pharmacological/non-pharmacological management for fibromyalgia. A review, in May 2015, identified eligible publications and key outcomes assessed were pain, fatigue, sleep and daily functioning. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development

Comparing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic condition that often responds well to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), though many patients fail to achieve full remission. Ericksonian Hypnotherapy (EH) has been proposed as a promising alternative. This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of CBT and EH against a waitlist control in 99 adults with OCD. Participants received 12 weekly online therapy sessions. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, mid-treatment, and post-treatment using the Padua Inventory-Revised, Yale - Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale - Self-Report (Y-BOCS-SR)

EEG-Based Analysis of Emotional Effects of Hypnotic Guided Imagery (HGI) on Employees with Burnout: A Feasibility Study.

Unregulated negative emotion increases the risk of burnout by 67%, which can impair performance and cause physical symptoms. Hypnotic guided imagery (HGI) is a deep relaxation-based intervention designed to shift negative to positive emotion. However, the physiological basis of emotional changes remains unclear. This feasibility study examined the acceptability and effects of HGI on emotional valence and arousal in employees with burnout using electroencephalography (EEG). Valence was indexed by frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), calculated as ln[rel(F4)] - ln[rel(F3)] and arousal by the frontal b
