Malassezia yeasts are responsible for the widely distributed skin disease Pityriasis versicolor (PV), which is characterized by a hyper- or hypopigmentation of affected skin areas. For Malassezia furfur, it has been shown that pigment production relies on tryptophan metabolism. A tryptophan aminotransferase was found to catalyse the initial catalytic step in pigment formation in the model organism Ustilago maydis. Here, we describe the sequence determination, recombinant production and biochemical characterization of tryptophan aminotransferase MfTam1 from M. furfur. The enzyme catalyses the t…

We reviewed the causes of "loss of skin color" in 144 patients, who visited Vitiligo Clinic of Kyoto University Hospital between April 2005 and August 2008. The numbers of patients with generalized and segmental Vitiligo vulgaris were 98 (68.1%) and 26 (18.1%), respectively. Small numbers of the patients suffered from Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, piebaldism, congenital albinism, Hypomelanosis of Ito, post-inflammatory hypopigmentation, white leaf-shaped macules associated with tuberous sclerosis and nevus hypopigmentosus. One forth of the patients with generalized vitiligo had complications, …

The most common complication was hypopigmentation (33.3%). All patients reported an improved final cosmetic result. Six patients (25%) treated with 70% TCA had a recurrence 6 months after treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of prospective treatment of 24 patients with EX with 70% TCA indicated tha …

UNLABELLED: Temporary henna tattoos have become increasingly popular as a safe alternative to permanent tattoos among American and European … ummer holidays in Greece and developed a severe contact dermatitis at the tattoo site with residual hypopigmentation. He had no previous history of contact dermatitis, however he did suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. Patch testing revealed a strong reaction to PPD, a substance commonly contained in temporary henna tattoo preparations. …

Permanent tattooing due to blast injuries is a rare condition. Treatment with various different methods often yields unsatisfactory results. … of the tissue samples showed deep dermal and subcutaneous particle location. At follow-up transient hypopigmentation but only minimal scarring was seen. Patients suffered less from itching, a chief complaint preoperatively, and aesthetic appearance of the facial skin was improved. In conclusion, treatment of traumatic tattoos with the V-shaped knife is effective, …

After 7 years of follow-up, a diffuse area of hypopigmentation and a residual light brown pigmentation were detectable. The histopathologic diagnosis was consistent with an atypical junctional nevus with regression with features of a Clark nevus.

BACKGROUND: Rhinophyma is the end stage of rosacea, affecting almost exclusively male patients, characterized by a progressive deformity in … with minimal scar formation by 8-10 weeks. None of the patients developed hypertrophic scarring and hypopigmentation was minimal.
CONCLUSION: Electrosection is as effective as laser treatments and less expensive. Although living in a laser era, electrosurgical remodeling of the nose is a good alternative for the treatment of rhinophyma.

Human oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a heritable metabolic defect transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait and characterized by a hypopigmentation of skin, hair and eyes. This defect is mainly due to an altered or absence of tyrosinase activity, the key enzyme of eu-and pheo-melanin synthesis. It is a seldom condition in white peoples but more frequent in Africans and in Afro-Americans. Albinos, especially in tropical settings, have high prevalence of solar keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma. Ocular defects characteristics of OCA are photobia, nystagmus and decreased visual acuity. Two…

"Dyschromia in confetti" is a pigmentary disturbance that so far has not been reported to have occurred during topical immunotherapy. In a group of 243 patients treated with diphenylcyclopropenone for alopecia areata, four patients showed a similar pattern of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. In one patient the pigmentary disturbance was confined to the site of diphenylcyclopropenone application on the scalp. Besides dyschromic skin changes on her scalp, one patient had development of a hyperpigmentation on her forearms. In the remaining two patients, dyschromia in confetti became manife…

Piebaldism, an autosomal dominant trait, is characterized by patchy hypopigmentation of the face, anterior chest, abdomen, and limbs, heterochromia/bicolored irises, congenital megacolon, and deafness. A 4-month-old Inuit (Eskimo) boy with these manifestations also had left pulmonic artery stenosis, ocular ptosis, and unilateral duplication of the renal collecting system. Evidence is presented for both qualitative and quantitative derangement of neural crest derivatives in this syndrome. Histologically, hypoganglionosis, hyperganglionosis, and ectopic ganglia in lamina propria (neuronal coloni…

Oculocutaneous albinism-characterized by absent or decreased melanin in the skin, eyes and hair-often co-occurs with sensory, skin and immunity disorders. The genetic basis of albinism in humans is complex, with many loci implicated in multiple forms of the disorder. Less is known about the underlying genetic causes of albinism and leucism in other species, and cross-species studies of the molecular correlates of hypopigmentation could highlight common and conserved pathways underlying mammalian pigmentation disorders. We characterize the putative causal loci of reduced pigmentation in an Egyp…

Children and adolescents with chronic cutaneous conditions are at risk of experiencing adverse psychosocial effects such as anxiety, depression, and loneliness. The well-being of these children's families may also be impacted by their child's condition. It is important for the quality of life of patients and their families to better understand the psychosocial impact caused by pediatric dermatologic conditions and interventions that help mitigate these effects. This review summarizes the psychological impact of the common pediatric dermatological disorders, vitiligo, psoriasis, and alopecia ar

Depigmented lesions may occur as postinflammatory sequelae of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE), leading to great psychosocial impact. A 53-year-old male patient presented with post-SCLE depigmented facial lesions after five years of disease stability. We proposed surgical treatment with melanocyte-keratinocyte transplantation procedure (MKTP), and after five months the patient achieved 90% repigmentation, without Koebner phenomenon (KP). In theory, KP is a possible complication of MKTP procedure since the preparation of the receptor area involves the use of dermabrasion. In an att
