Evaluation of different buffered peptone water (BPW) based enrichment broths for detection of Gram-negative foodborne pathogens from various food matrices.

This study evaluated the effects of changing the composition of the pre-enrichment medium buffered peptone water (BPW) on the growth of stressed and unstressed Gram-negative foodborne pathogens in a one-broth enrichment strategy. BPW supplemented with an available iron source and sodium pyruvate, along with low levels of 8-hydroxyquinoline and sodium deoxycholate (BPW-S) improved the recovery of desiccated Cronobacter spp. from powdered infant formula. Growth of Salmonella and STEC was comparable in all BPW variants tested for different food matrices. In products with high levels of Gram-negat…

Bacterial lysates in food allergy prevention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In the concept of food allergy prevention, no successful strategy could be identified until now. Although interventional trials using probiotics, prebiotics, hydrolyzed formula and bacterial lysates early in infancy were found to reduce the incidence of atopic dermatitis, no effect on food sensitization and allergy could be shown. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies in a farming environment showed that early contact to livestock, bacteria and moulds may upregulate the immune responses regulated via Toll-like receptors and thus prevent allergy. There is increasing evidence that the unb

Home enteral nutrition in children: a one-year experience with 184 patients in Distrito Federal, Brazil.

There is little published evidence concerning home enteral nutrition therapy in children. The present work attempts to analyze the profile of pediatric patients undergoing this therapy in the Federal District, Brazil. This is a retrospective study of data of all patients younger than 18 y old enrolled in the Home Enteral Nutrition Therapy Program of the Brazilian Public Health Department, Federal District, from January to December 2005. The study covered 184 children and adolescents. The patients' median age at the beginning of treatment was 2.00 y (Q1-Q3: 1.00-7.00). Pathologies leading to ho

Thiamine deficiency in infants: MR findings in the brain.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Thiamine deficiency is extremely rare in infants in developed countries. To our knowledge, its MR findings in the brain have not been reported. The purpose of this study was to investigate the brain MR findings in infants with encephalopathy due to thiamine deficiency. METHODS: The study group included six infants aged 2-10 months with encephalopathy who had been fed with solely soy-based formula devoid of thiamine from birth. All underwent MR evaluation at admission and follow-up (total of 14 examinations). In one patient, MR spectroscopy (MRS) was performed. RESULTS

Infant milk-feeding practices and diagnosed celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease in offspring: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: During the Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months Project, the USDA and US Department of Health and Human Services initiated an evidence review on diet and health in these populations. OBJECTIVE: The aim of these systematic reviews was to examine the relationships of never versus ever feeding human milk, shorter versus longer durations of any and exclusive human milk feeding, and feeding a lower versus a higher intensity of human milk to mixed-fed infants with diagnosed celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: The Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review team (formerly

Enteral calcium, phosphate and vitamin D requirements and bone mineralization in preterm infants.

UNLABELLED: With major advances in life-support measures, nutrition has become one of the most debated issues in the care of very low birth-weight (VLBW) infants. Current nutritional recommendations are based on healthy premature infants and designed to provide postnatal nutrient retention during the 'stable-growing' period equivalent to the intrauterine gain of a normal foetus. However, this reference is still a matter of discussion, especially in the field of the mineral requirements. After birth, there are dramatic physiological changes in bone metabolism resulting from various factors: dis

Factors associated with initiation and duration of breastfeeding in Greece.

AIM: Our aim was to study factors affecting the initiation, progress and duration of breastfeeding in Greece. METHODS: We studied 938 infants born in 2001 in 17 maternity hospitals in Greece. RESULTS: The percentage of breastfeeding infants was 85.5%. The actual progress of breastfeeding was different from the one that the mothers intended to follow. Although the majority of women claimed in the beginning that they would breastfeed mainly for four to six months (23.2%) and 12-14 months (23.1%), the majority had discontinued breastfeeding by the fourth month (58.5%) and only 7.3% breastfed fo

Feeding practices and nutritional management of infants with transient and congenital hyperinsulinism: A tertiary single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hyperinsulinism (HI) is the most common cause of persistent neonatal hypoglycemia and requires careful nutritional management to maintain glycemic stability. Infants with transient hyperinsulinism (THI) often recover within months, whereas congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) frequently requires prolonged medical and nutritional support. This study aimed to compare feeding practices and nutritional management of infants with THI and CHI. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included infants diagnosed with HI under 12 months of age between January 2020 and January 2

Unbound bilirubin measurements in term and late-preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia occurs in over 80% of newborns, and severe bilirubin toxicity can lead to neurological dysfunction and death. Unbound bilirubin (Bf) levels predict the risk of neurodevelopmental handicap, although total serum bilirubin (TSB) is used to manage care. OBJECTIVE: To measure Bf levels in healthy infants, its relationship to TSB, and its response to phototherapy. We hypothesize unexpectedly high Bf levels, poor correlation with TSB and unpredictable response to phototherapy. DESIGN/METHODS: Healthy infants were studied with simultaneous TSB and Bf measurements. The

Influence of early environmental factors on lymphocyte subsets and gut microbiota in infants at risk of celiac disease; the PROFICEL study.

INTRODUCTION: It is known that the HLA genotype can explain about a 40% of the genetic risk of celiac disease (CD), thus, other genetic predisposing factors as well as factors that subtly modulate T cell activation and differentiation need to be studied. This includes environmental factors that are currently believed to impact on the immune system and gut microbiota development. AIM: To assess the associations between early environmental factors (EEF), lymphocyte subsets, and intestinal microbiota composition in infants at familial risk for CD. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study.

Special nutritional needs of infants for prevention of and recovery from bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Extremely low birth weight infants who develop severe respiratory disease may have special nutrient requirements imposed by a combination of … and induce restricted somatic and bone mineral growth. Supplemental nutrition by means of enriched infant formulas has provided benefits in growth and bone mass accretion to infants recovering from bronchopulmonary dysplasia up to 3-mo corrected age. This growth advantage was not sustained over the subsequent 9 mo, suggesting that prolonged nutritional support …

Low vitamin B6 status associated with slow growth in healthy breast-fed infants.

To evaluate the effect of vitamin B6 status on infant growth, we studied longitudinally anthropometry and the erythrocyte parameters that reflect long-term vitamin B6 status [erythrocyte pyridoxal 5'-phosphate concentration (EPLP), erythrocyte aspartate transaminase basal activity (EAST0), and its activation co-efficient (alpha EAST)] in 44 infants. The infants were exclusively breast-fed for 6 mo, given additional solids according a uniform schedule from 6-9 mo, and formula after 9 mo, if needed. In seven of these infants, a low vitamin B6 status (EPLP < 10th, and EAST0 > 10th or alpha EAST >

Screening for Iron Deficiency Anemia in Infants in a Thalassemia-endemic Region.

Screening for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in infants is usually carried out by hemoglobin (Hb) level and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). A coinherited thalassemia carrier may confound the diagnosis of IDA. This study aimed to characterize the hematologic parameters in infants with IDA and in thalassemia carriers, and to study the use of red cell parameters in IDA screening in a thalassemia-endemic area. Healthy infants, 6 to 12 months of age were enrolled. Blood samples were taken for complete blood count, ferritin level, Hb analysis, and polymerase chain reaction for alpha-thalassemia. IDA wa

Modelling intestinal glucose absorption in premature infants using continuous glucose monitoring data.

BACKGROUND: Model-based glycaemic control protocols have shown promise in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) for reducing both hyperglycaemia and insulin-therapy driven hypoglycaemia. However, current models for the appearance of glucose from enteral feeding are based on values from adult intensive care cohorts. This study aims to determine enteral glucose appearance model parameters more reflective of premature infant physiology. METHODS: Peaks in CGM data associated with enteral milk feeds in preterm and term infants are used to fit a two compartment gut model. The first compartment desc
