A comprehensive review on recent advances in the use of ethnomedicinal plants and their metabolites in snake bite treatment.

Snakebites are a severe medical and social issue, particularly in tropical and subtropical countries with minimal medical facilities, where the most dangerous snakes are found. Worldwide, most rural areas use medicinal plants alone or in combination as antidotes for snakebite treatment. Local knowledge of medicinal plants for snakebite treatment plays a more critical role in primary healthcare services in rural areas. As a result of this review, it is revealed that 39% of herbs, 38% of shrubs, 18% of trees, 2% of climbers, 2% of bulbs, and 1% of ferns have snake antivenom potential, which is i

Gemelli SLE Data Mart: A Real World Evidence Framework for the Evolution of Systemic Lupus Erythematousus Patients.

The diverse data sources in hospitals are crucial for real-world evidence (RWE) analysis and for developing decision support systems. However, integrating this variety of sources into standardized data collections for a specific disease, requires the development of highly personalized frameworks. In this study, we propose a RWE approach for the development of a Data Mart for the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) at the Gemelli hospital of Rome. Our approach combines natural language processing and data mining procedures to capture information about organ involvements, activity episodes and tr

An Examination of How Individuals Manage Uncertainty Around Scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), affecting approximately one in every 25 children, presents significant lifelong physical and psychosocial challenges. However, a systematic understanding of the sources of this uncertainty and how individuals communicatively navigate it is lacking. Thus, this qualitative study applied uncertainty management theory (UMT) to examine participants' uncertainty associated with scoliosis. The investigation identified key sources of uncertainty (medical, financial, social, and career) and management strategies through semi-structured interviews with 21 individua

Probable extinction of influenza B/Yamagata and its public health implications: a systematic literature review and assessment of global surveillance databases.

Early after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the detection of influenza B/Yamagata cases decreased globally. Given the potential public health implications of this decline, in this Review, we systematically analysed data on influenza B/Yamagata virus circulation (for 2020-23) from multiple complementary sources of information. We identified relevant articles published in PubMed and Embase, and data from the FluNet, Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data, and GenBank databases, webpages of respiratory virus surveillance systems from countries worldwide, and the Global Influenza Hosp

Coherence-orbital angular momentum matrix of Schell-model sources.

The coherence-orbital angular momentum (COAM) matrix characterizes the second-order field correlations in stationary sources or fields, at a pair of spiral modes with the same or different topological charges, say l and m, and at a pair of radial positions. In this Letter, we reveal the general properties of the COAM matrix for the broad class of the Schell-model sources with circularly symmetric spectral densities. Our results imply that the structure of the COAM matrix is intimately related to the symmetries of the degree of coherence (DOC). In particular, the COAM matrix is diagonal if the

Assessing visual modulation along the human subcortical auditory pathway.

Experience of the world is inherently multisensory. It has been suggested that audiovisual modulation occurs as early as subcortical auditory stages. However, this was based on the frequency-following response, a measure recently found to be significantly generated from cortical sources. It therefore remains unclear whether subcortical auditory processing can indeed be modulated by visual information. We aimed to trace visual modulation along the auditory pathway by comparing auditory brainstem response (ABR) and middle-latency response (MLR) between unimodal auditory and multimodal audiovisua

Lyme Disease and YouTube TM: A Cross-Sectional Study of Video Contents.

OBJECTIVES: Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease. People seek health information on Lyme disease from YouTubeTM videos. In this study, we investigated if the contents of Lyme disease-related YouTubeTM videos varied by their sources. METHODS: Most viewed English YouTubeTM videos (n = 100) were identified and manually coded for contents and sources. RESULTS: Within the sample, 40 videos were consumer-generated, 31 were internet-based news, 16 were professional, and 13 were TV news. Compared with consumer-generated videos, TV news videos were more likely to mention celebrities (od

Predicting postoperative acute respiratory failure in critical care using nursing notes and physiological signals.

Postoperative Acute Respiratory Failure (ARF) is a serious complication in critical care affecting patient morbidity and mortality. In this paper we investigate a novel approach to predicting ARF in critically ill patients. We study the use of two disparate sources of information – semi-structured text contained in nursing notes and investigative reports that are regularly recorded and the respiration rate, a physiological signal that is continuously monitored during a patient's ICU stay. Unlike previous works that retrospectively analyze complications, we exclude discharge summaries from our

A practical approach to glare assessment for train cabs.

The assessment of glare is a key consideration in the design of a railway driver's cab. However, unlike assessment of other factors, such as forward visibility, there are no standardised approaches for performing assessments of glare. This paper describes an approach for assessing the impact of glare in a full size mock-up of a railway cab. While it is unrealistic to evaluate every possible lighting condition that may potentially occur in the vehicle cab in service, a pragmatic and practical approach is taken to provide a good level of indicative information about the cab design's likely glare

Geochemical distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils and sediments of El-Tabbin, Egypt.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were extracted from 30 samples (24 soils and 6 stream sediments) collected in El-Tabbin area in the southern part of Greater Cairo, Egypt. Isopleth maps of PAHs clarified the regional variability and identified the most affected regions in the area suffering from high pollution. The total PAH concentrations were 53.4-5558.0 ng g(-1) in the sample extracts. The highest values were found in a soil sample near a coke factory, with the highest concentration of single PAHs, which were 1064.8 ng g(-1) of fluoranthene and 1286.4 ng g(-1) of phenanthrene. The ca

Using the gravity model to estimate the spatial spread of vector-borne diseases.

The gravity models are commonly used spatial interaction models. They have been widely applied in a large set of domains dealing with interactions amongst spatial entities. The spread of vector-borne diseases is also related to the intensity of interaction between spatial entities, namely, the physical habitat of pathogens’ vectors and/or hosts, and urban areas, thus humans. This study implements the concept behind gravity models in the spatial spread of two vector-borne diseases, nephropathia epidemica and Lyme borreliosis, based on current knowledge on the transmission mechanism of these dis

Risk factors for an outbreak of leptospirosis in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) in California, 2004.

Leptospirosis has been reported in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) since 1970; however, the source of infection and mode of transmission remain unknown. To elucidate these features, demographic and environmental risk factors for leptospirosis were evaluated. California sea lion stranding records from northern California for 2004 were used to identify cases of leptospirosis (n = 316) and controls (n = 143). Demographic characteristics (age class, sex) and environmental factors, representing surrogates for exposure to dogs, cattle, rainfall, and freshwater sources, were compared be

Potential sources of neck and back pain in clinical conditions of dogs and cats: a review.

Pathological neck and back pain occurs in many medical conditions of dogs and cats. Pain may arise from a variety of structures including the intervertebral discs, facet joint capsules, dorsal root ganglia, vertebral ligaments, the vertebral periosteum, and the meninges. The source of this pain is dependent upon the type of disease process and its location within or surrounding the spinal column. Diseases can directly or indirectly stimulate pain sensors (nociceptors). Inflammatory diseases may hypersensitize these receptors or nociceptive pathways with inflammatory mediating substances such a

Radiation and brain calcium: a review and critique.

Serious controversy pervades the scientific study of radio-frequency (RF) radiation and its biological effects. The issues range broadly from international differences in safe exposure standards to questions pertaining to the neurological symptoms purportedly induced by electromagnetic radiation. In a more specialized vein, there is great concern in the discipline about the influence of different sources of radiation on the activity of calcium in the brain. A principal and very realistic reason for this concern stems from the pivotal importance of calcium ions in the normal functioning of the

Tracing spatial mid-size Eastern U.S. cities road dust pollution: insights from source apportionment and health risk assessment.

As urban areas expand in eastern USA, the convergence of historical and modern anthropogenic source inputs has resulted in a complex geochemical signature of road dust pollution, while representing a critical public health issue for communities. In this study, road dust collected at seven (7) cities in eastern USA was analyzed for 11 potential toxic elements (PTEs, e.g., Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ni, Fe, Mo, V, Co, Cd, Pb) and examined for their characteristics, sources, and potential health risks. Multivariate statistical analyses show the regional difference between northeastern (Trenton, NJ; Wilmingt

Geo-demographic and socioeconomic determinants of diagnosed hypertension among urban dwellers in Ibadan, Nigeria: a community-based study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between diagnosed high blood pressure (HBP) and proximity to health facilities and noise sources is poorly understood. We investigated the associations between the number of persons diagnosed with HBP at different distance corridors of noise-generating sources (churches, mosques, bus stops, and road networks), and blood pressure monitoring outlets (healthcare facilities and pharmaceutical shops) in Ibadan, Nigeria. In addition, we investigated the likelihood of being diagnosed with HBP using distance from noise-generating sources, distance to blood pressure monitor
