Nanocapsules are a promising controlled release formulation for foliar pest control. However, the complicated process and high cost limit widespread use in agriculture, so a simpler and more convenient preparation system is urgently needed. Meanwhile, under complex field conditions, the advantageous mechanism of the nanosize effect and sustained release have no quantitative and detailed study. In this study, a reactive emulsifier (OP-10) is used to participate in the interfacial polymerization of the nanoemulsion, and polymer nanocapsules loaded with lambda-cyhalothrin (NCS@LC) are quickly and

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health concern in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and its control is affected by recurrent conflicts. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) initiated several studies to better understand the unprecedented incidence of malaria to effectively target and implement interventions in emergency settings. The current study evaluated the main vector species involved in malaria transmission and their resistance to insecticides, with the aim to propose the most effective tools and strategies for control of local malaria vectors.
METHODS: This study was perf…

BACKGROUND: Myanmar is a premalaria elimination country with artemisinin-resistant malaria. A strategy for transmission control is focused on vulnerable groups such as mobile and migrant populations (MMPs), and includes improving access to insecticide-treated bed nets in the Myanmar artemisinin resistance containment (MARC) zones using multisectoral approaches (MSA).
METHODS: This narrative systematic review addressed MSAs targeted to MMPs in Myanmar for malaria prevention. We searched relevant studies in electronic databases and present the narrative findings in 4 domains: stakeholder groups

Mathematical models within the General Unified Threshold models of Survival (GUTS) framework translate time-variable chemical exposure information into expected survival of animals. The GUTS models are species and compound specific and explicitly describe the internal exposure dynamics in an organism (toxicokinetics) and the related damage and effect dynamics (toxicodynamics), thereby connecting the external exposure concentration dynamics with the simulated mortality or immobility over time. In a recent scientific opinion on toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic (TKTD) models published by the European

BACKGROUND: The burden of malaria in Uganda remains high, but has become increasingly heterogenous following intensified malaria control. Travel within Uganda is recognized as a risk factor for malaria, but behaviours associated with travel are not well-understood. To address this knowledge gap, malaria-relevant behaviours of cohort participants were assessed during travel and at home in Uganda.
METHODS: Residents from 80 randomly selected households in Nagongera sub-county, Tororo district were enrolled into a cohort to study malaria in rural Uganda. All participants were given long-lasting

Aedes aegypti represents one of the main vectors of at least five relevant arthropod-borne viral infections in humans (i.e., Rift Valley fever, Dengue fever, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever) worldwide. Ae. aegypti control strategies are mostly based on using chemical insecticides (i.e., organophosphates, pyrethroids, carbamates, and organochlorines) and reducing larval sources. Furthermore, monitoring the growth activity and mapping the geographical distribution of insecticide resistance are mandatory, as recommended by the WHO. Accordingly, we conducted a study on the possible mechanism b…

Pyrethroids are a class of widely used insecticides. Cypermethrin (CP) is one of most commonly used pyrethroid insecticides and its residue has been frequently detected in environmental media. Our recent animal study reported that early postnatal exposure to CP induced an increase in serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as well as the expression of gonadotropin subunit genes (chorionic gonadotropin α [CGα], LHβ and FSHβ) in pituitary tissues. In this study, we further investigated the precise mechanism by which CP at concentrations of 1-100 nM affecte…

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic neglected tropical disease prevalent in several areas where seasonal malaria transmission is active. We assessed the effect of indoor residual spraying (IRS) and the mass distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated bednets (LLINs) for malaria control on sand fly population diversity and abundance, and its impact on the risk of Leishmania transmission in the district of Baroueli, endemic for CL in Mali.
METHODS: Kemena and Sougoula, two villages in the district of Baroueli, were selected for entomology surveys from March to September

Peanut growers use a combination of tactics to manage spotted wilt disease caused by thrips-transmitted Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). They include planting TSWV-resistant cultivars, application of insecticides, and various cultural practices. Two commonly used insecticides against thrips are aldicarb and phorate. Both insecticides exhibit broad-spectrum toxicity. Recent research has led to the identification of potential alternatives to aldicarb and phorate. In this study, along with reduced-risk, alternative insecticides, we evaluated the effect of conventional versus strip tillage; singl…

The antifeedant and contact toxicity of Sphagneticola trilobata L. (Asterales: Asteraceae) extracts and isolated alkane compounds were investigated. Leaves of S. trilobata were sequentially extracted with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Each extract and the compounds isolated were evaluated against the third instars of Spodoptera litura (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae). Ethyl acetate extract and isolated alkanes were feeding deterrents as well as contact toxins again

Short-chain insecticidal neurotoxin Tx4(6-1) from the spider Phoneutria nigriventer can be prepared by reversed-phase high-performance liquid-chromatography (HPLC) fractionation of PhTx4, but this is difficult and represents an obstacle preventing analyses of its insecticidal activity against agricultural insect pests. Herein, we performed secretory expression of recombinant Tx4(6-1) using Pichia pastoris strain X33 as the host, and screened transformants using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In flasks, ∼5 mg/l rTx4(6-1) was expressed as a secreted protein following induction with m

BACKGROUND: Papua New Guinea exhibits a complex malaria epidemiology due to diversity in malaria parasites, mosquito vectors, human hosts, and their natural environment. Heterogeneities in transmission and burden of malaria at various scales are likely to affect the success of malaria control interventions, and vice-versa. This manuscript assesses changes in malaria prevalence, incidence and transmission in sentinel sites following the first national distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs).
METHODS: Before and after the distribution of LLINs, data collection in six purposively

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets are the cornerstone of global malaria control and have been shown to reduce malaria morbidity by 50-60%. However, some areas are experiencing a resurgence in malaria following successful control. We describe an efficacy decay framework to understand why high malaria burden persists even under high ITN coverage in a community in western Kenya.
METHODS: We enrolled 442 children hospitalized with malaria and paired them with age, time, village and gender-matched controls. We completed comprehensive household and neighborhood assessments including entomologica

Acute and different chronic ecotoxic effects of deltamethrin have been investigated on two strains (coming from two different laboratories) of Daphnia magna. The effective concentrations immobilizing 50% of daphnids (EC50s) after 24 h and 48 h were 9.40 and 0.32 μg L(-1), 8.86 and 0.63 μg L(-1) for first strain (strain 1) and second strain (strain 2), respectively. Thus, there was an increase of deltamethrin ecotoxicity with time of exposure as confirmed by chronic studies. After 21 days of exposure to deltamethrin, daphnids have showed significant effects on survival at deltamethrin concentra

Due to an intensive use of chemical insecticides, resistance mechanisms to insecticides together with adverse effects on non-target organisms have been largely reported. Improvement in pest control strategy represents an urgent need to optimize efficiency in the control of pest insects. In this context, a novel method based on the use of insect specific virus applied in combination with chemical insecticide, which could lead to sensitization of the insect target to insecticides is described. Insect virus, the baculovirus Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), applied on…

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) control in the Indian subcontinent is currently based on case detection and treatment, and on vector control using indoor residual spraying (IRS). The use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LN) has been postulated as an alternative or complement to IRS. Here we tested the impact of comprehensive distribution of LN on the density of Phlebotomus argentipes in VL-endemic villages.
METHODS: A cluster-randomized controlled trial with household P. argentipes density as outcome was designed. Twelve clusters from an ongoing LN clinical trial--three intervention

BACKGROUND: The toxicity of a fusion protein, ButalT/GNA, comprising a venom toxin (ButaIT) derived from the red scorpion, Mesobuthus tamulus (F.), and Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA), was evaluated under laboratory conditions against several pest insects. Insecticidal activity was compared with SFI1/GNA, a fusion comprising a venom toxin (SFI1) derived from the European spider Segestria florentina (Rossi) and GNA, which has been previously demonstrated to be effective against lepidopteran and hemipteran pests, and to GNA itself.
RESULTS: Injection assays demonstrated that both fusion prot
