AIM: To investigate the value of retroflexion in detecting neoplasia in the distal rectum.
METHODS: This was a prospective observational study performed in an academic endoscopy unit. Consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopy had careful forward viewing of the distal rectum by retroflexion. Of 1502 procedures, 1076 (72%) procedures were performed with a 140 degrees angle of view colonoscope and 426 (28%) were performed with a 170 degrees angle of view colonoscope. The outcome measurement was the yield of neoplasia in the distal rectum detected by forward viewing vs retroflexion.

BACKGROUND: Multiple lymphomatous polyposis (LP) is a rare entity, characterized by multiple polypoid tumors involving several segments of the gastrointestinal tract.
METHODS: In this large retrospective series of 12 patients with LP, histologic and immunohistochemical features were investigated from patients with multiple biopsy samples from each site (500 gastrointestinal biopsies). Immunohistochemistry was performed on paraffin embedded biopsies from 12 patients and on frozen tissue biopsies from 8 patients, for each of whom at least two different anatomic sites were studied.

OBJECTIVES: Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) is effective for managing small bowel (SB) diseases. We aimed to evaluate the patient outcomes of DBE polypectomy in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) with large SB polyps at surveillance imaging studies and to identify the risk factors for SB surgery.
METHODS: Forty-five PJS patients who underwent regular SB surveillance imaging studies from 2005 to 2023 were retrospectively included. DBE was performed for polyps > 15 mm detected by imaging studies, and DBE polypectomy was conducted for those > 10 mm or symptomatic ones.

Colonoscopic screening for neoplasia was performed in a regional group of ulcerative colitis patients with a disease duration of greater than or equal to 15 years. A 54-year-old male case with multiple, diffuse hemangiomas of the large intestine is described. Large diffuse hemangiomas were located at the rectosigmoid and the ascending colon. Some polypoid lesions were located on the transverse colon. Tiny calcifications representing phleboliths were detected in those lesions. No skin hemangiomas were present. Although he did not manifest systemic bleeding tendency, blood examinations demonstrated the presence of mild consumption coagulopathy.

Together with digital examination and rectoscopy, the endorectal ultrasound is of great value in the preoperative diagnostics of rectal carcinoma. Benign small bowel tumors are rare. If those with malignant potential are excluded, a small group of truly benign lesions remains. Fifty-six cases of these small bowel tumors were analyzed for clinical data, pathologic diagnosis, number, size, location, and radiologic appearance.
