In 46 amputations performed on account of peripheral occlusive arterial disease, the morphine puncture test (MPT) and the local skin perfusion pressure measurement (SPP) were carried out preoperatively. Below-knee (BK) amputation was performed when the SPP was greater than or equal to 40 mm Hg unless clinical criteria indicated otherwise. Active immunotherapy with living BCG was conducted on 98 patients with various types of cancer. The candidates for this therapy were patients with residual or inoperable cancer of the colorectum, liver, breast, biliary tract, lung, and other organs with a follow-up of 4-58 months. Eleven of the 98 (11%) were able to survive for as long as 37-58 months (mean survival time 42.5 months) because of this treatment and are still living. Results of studies on two male infants with incomplete expression of the DiGeorge syndrome are analyzed. Both infants demonstrated neonatal tetany with hypoparathyroidism, cardiovascular anomalies, and absence of a thymus shadow on roentgenographic examination. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and the annual risk of infection (ARI) of tuberculosis (TB) in an indigenous population in Brazil.
METHODS: We applied a method to estimate the prevalence of TB infection in populations with high bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine coverage. The method consisted of comparing levels of skin test reactivity in individuals tested with purified protein derivative (PPD) before and after stimulation with intradermal BCG. Fieldwork was carried out among the Suruí Indians (n = 993) in two phases, 3 months apart.
