Permitting a trial of labor in patients with a previous cesarean birth is rapidly becoming an accepted alternative to routine elective repeat cesarean section. Ripening of the cervix by intravaginal application of a prostaglandin-containing gel is evaluated. Thirty patients with an unfavorable cervix needing labor induction were studied in a double-blind, prospective fashion. Placental sulfatase deficiency and congenital ichthyosis are two manifestations of an X-linked recessive inborn error of metabolism. This uncommon disorder can be diagnosed antenatally by maternal urinary steroid assays.
