Morphological Features of Language Regions in Individuals with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

A significant number of individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) exhibit language difficulties. Here, we examined the language-related brain morphometry in 59 participants (7 participants with TSC and comorbid autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (TSC + ASD), 13 with TSC but no ASD (TSC-ASD), 10 with ASD-only (ASD), and 29 typically developing (TD) controls). A hemispheric asymmetry was noted in surface area and gray matter volume of several cortical language areas in TD, ASD, and TSC-ASD groups, but not in TSC + ASD group. TSC + ASD group demonstrated increased cortical thickness and curva…

Consultative engagement of stakeholders toward a roadmap for African language technologies.

There has been a rise in natural language processing (NLP) communities across the African continent (Masakhane, AfricaNLP workshops). With this momentum noted, and given the existing power asymmetries that plague the African continent, there is an urgent need to ensure that these technologies move toward shared goals between organizations and stakeholders, not only to improve the representation of African languages in cutting-edge NLP research but also to ensure that NLP research enables technological advances toward human dignity, well-being, and equity for those who speak African languages. …

Language impairment in the genetic forms of behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural variant fronto-temporal dementia (bvFTD) is characterised by a progressive change in personality in association with atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes. Whilst language impairment has been described in people with bvFTD, little is currently known about the extent or type of linguistic difficulties that occur, particularly in the genetic forms. METHODS: Participants with genetic bvFTD along with healthy controls were recruited from the international multicentre Genetic FTD Initiative (GENFI). Linguistic symptoms were assessed using items from the Progressive Apha…

Sign language recognition by means of common spatial patterns: An analysis.

Currently there are around 466 million hard of hearing people and this amount is expected to grow in the coming years. Despite the efforts that have been made, there is a communication barrier between deaf and hard of hearing signers and non-signers in environments without an interpreter. Different approaches have been developed lately to try to deal with this issue. In this work, we present an Argentinian Sign Language (LSA) recognition system which uses hand landmarks extracted from videos of the LSA64 dataset in order to distinguish between different signs. Different features are extracted …

Natural Language Processing and Psychosis: On the Need for Comprehensive Psychometric Evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Despite decades of "proof of concept" findings supporting the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in psychosis research, clinical implementation has been slow. One obstacle reflects the lack of comprehensive psychometric evaluation of these measures. There is overwhelming evidence that criterion and content validity can be achieved for many purposes, particularly using machine learning procedures. However, there has been very little evaluation of test-retest reliability, divergent validity (sufficient to address concerns of a "generalized deficit"), and potentia…

Early predictors of language outcomes in Down syndrome: A mini-review.

As children with Down syndrome (DS) typically manifest significant delays in language development, the research has pointed out the predictors of later language skills for this clinical population. The purpose of this study was to systematically explore the evidence for early predictors of language outcomes in infants and toddlers with DS from studies published between 2012 and 2022. After the search, nine studies met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that maternal educational level, adaptive level of functioning, cognitive function, attention skills, communicative intent of the ch…

Examining Risk of Speech-Language Disorders in Children With Cleft Lip.

Although it is well-established that children with cleft palate are at high risk for communication disorders, little is known about the speech-language profiles of children with cleft lip (with or without cleft alveolus), who do not have an overt cleft palate. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of speech-language disorders in a consecutively evaluated group of children with cleft lip, with or without cleft alveolus (CL ± A) from a single cleft lip and palate center in the United States. We also explored the types of speech and language disorders in this cohort and examin…

The unique role of the frontal aslant tract in speech and language processing.

The frontal aslant tract (FAT) is a recently described intralobar tract that connects the superior and inferior frontal gyri. The FAT has been implicated in various speech and language processes and disorders, including motor speech impairments, stuttering disorders, opercular syndrome, and verbal fluency, but the specific function(s) of the FAT have yet to be elucidated. In the current study, we aimed to address this knowledge gap by investigating the underlying role that the FAT plays in motor aspects of speech and language abilities in post-stroke aphasia. Our goals were three-fold: 1) To i…

Public awareness of developmental language disorder in Croatia, Italy and Slovenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous research, although scarce, has indicated that the general public is still relatively unaware of developmental language disorder (DLD), one of the most common (neuro)developmental disorders. Raising awareness would increase timely involvement in intervention procedures. AIMS: To examine public awareness of DLD in the neighbouring countries of Croatia, Italy and Slovenia, as well as to assess the influence of age, gender and education level on that awareness. Also, to investigate public knowledge about the professionals who recognize DLD and to compare the awareness of DLD …

Missing links: The functional unification of language and memory (L∪M).

The field of neurocognition is currently undergoing a significant change of perspective. Traditional neurocognitive models evolved into an integrative and dynamic vision of cognitive functioning. Dynamic integration assumes an interaction between cognitive domains traditionally considered to be distinct. Language and declarative memory are regarded as separate functions supported by different neural systems. However, they also share anatomical structures (notably, the inferior frontal gyrus, the supplementary motor area, the superior and middle temporal gyrus, and the hippocampal complex) and …

The Impact of Aging on Spatial Abilities in Deaf Users of a Sign Language.

Research involving the general population of people who use a spoken language to communicate has demonstrated that older adults experience cognitive and physical changes associated with aging. Notwithstanding the differences in the cognitive processes involved in sign and spoken languages, it is possible that aging can also affect cognitive processing in deaf signers. This research aims to explore the impact of aging on spatial abilities among sign language users. Results showed that younger signers were more accurate than older signers on all spatial tasks. Therefore, the age-related impact o…

Location Effects on Spoken Language and Literacy for Children who are DHH.

The purpose of this study was to consider how living in an area that qualifies for a rural health grant interacts with a child's hearing status to affect early language and literacy development. Four-year-old children with hearing aids (n = 45), cochlear implants (n = 47), and with typical hearing (n = 66) completed measures of spoken language knowledge and of emergent literacy skills as part of a larger longitudinal investigation. A significant interaction effect between location (rural or urban/suburban) and amplification group was detected for letter knowledge: children with hearing aids ex…

Thalamic but Not Subthalamic Neuromodulation Simplifies Word Use in Spontaneous Language.

Several investigations have shown language impairments following electrode implantation surgery for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in movement disorders. The impact of the actual stimulation, however, differs between DBS targets with further deterioration in formal language tests induced by thalamic DBS in contrast to subtle improvement observed in subthalamic DBS. Here, we studied speech samples from interviews with participants treated with DBS of the thalamic ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) for essential tremor (ET), or the subthalamic nucleus (STN) for Parkinson's disease (PD), and health…
