Telomere length is associated with oppositional defiant behavior and maternal clinical depression in Latino preschool children.

Exposure to psychological stress and depression are associated with shorter white blood cell telomere length (TL) in adults, possibly via associated lifelong oxidative stressors. Exposure to maternal depression increases risk for future depression and behavior problems in children, and Latino youth are at high risk. Few studies have evaluated the role of exposure to maternal depression or child behavior in relation to TL in children. We assessed early-childhood exposures to maternal depression from birth to the age of 5 years and child behavior from ages 3-5 years in a cohort of Latino childre

Tone abnormalities are associated with maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy in in utero cocaine-exposed infants.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal cigarette smoking, alcohol use, and other factors confound studies of in utero cocaine exposure. Our goal was to determine whether in utero cocaine exposure is associated with an abnormal neurologic examination in infants, while controlling for concomitant cigarette smoke exposure and other confounding variables. DESIGN: Healthy newborns with birth weights > or =2000 g were prospectively enrolled into a race-matched study of cocaine-exposed and cocaine-unexposed infants. Urine and meconium samples were analyzed for illicit drugs, the cocaine metabolite, benzoylecgonine, an

Maternal Antihypertensive Medication Use and Congenital Heart Defects: Updated Results From the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

Previous NBDPS (National Birth Defects Prevention Study) findings from 1997 to 2003 suggested that maternal antihypertensive use was associated with congenital heart defects (CHDs). We re-examined associations between specific antihypertensive medication classes and specific CHDs with additional NBDPS data from 2004 to 2011. After excluding mothers missing hypertension information or who reported pregestational diabetes mellitus, a multiple birth, or antihypertensive use but no hypertension, we compared self-reported maternal exposure data on 10 625 CHD cases and 11 137 nonmalformed controls. …

Effects of mother's dietary exposure to acesulfame-K in Pregnancy or lactation on the adult offspring's sweet preference.

This study investigates whether mother's exposure to the artificial sweetener acesulfame-K (AK) during pregnancy or lactation affected her adult offspring's sweet preference. It was found that mother's dietary exposure to AK in pregnancy or lactation decreased the preference thresholds for AK and sucrose solutions in the adult offspring, whereas the preference pattern and the most preferred concentration for AK or sucrose solution were unchanged. Furthermore, the preference scores in the exposure groups were increased significantly when compared with the control group at a range of concentrati

The Effect of Perinatal Exposure to Cafeteria Diet and Physical Activity on Diet Preference, Anxiety-like and Depressive-like Behavior, and Memory in Female and Male Offspring Rats.

Background/Objectives: Overweight and obesity have consistently increased in prevalence. Early exposure to foods high in fats and sugar through maternal conditions may increase vulnerability to developing metabolic diseases and cognitive impairments in adulthood. In this regard, we aim to evaluate the effects that perinatal exposure to cafeteria diet (CAF) and physical activity (PA) has on anxiety-like, depressive-like behavior, memory and diet preference in male and female offspring. Methods: Seventy female and male offspring rats were divided into five groups according to maternal conditions

Associations between maternal blood lead concentration during pregnancy and trajectories of wheezing and asthma in offspring: The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a major chronic disease in childhood. Environmental factors such as air pollution, tobacco smoke, and dust have been associated with asthma prevalence. Lead (Pb) exposure can cause adverse health outcomes, yet epidemiologic evidence linking prenatal maternal Pb exposure during pregnancy and childhood wheeze/asthma is mixed, and longitudinal studies characterising early-life respiratory phenotypes at contemporary low exposure levels remain limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between maternal Pb exposure during pregnancy and trajectories of wheezing and asthma

Association between prenatal bisphenol a exposure and promoter hypermethylation of CAPS2, TNFRSF25, and HKR1 genes in cord blood.

In utero exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) in early stages of development has been reported to exert adverse health effects on offspring later in life. Epigenetic alterations, particularly DNA methylation, may be one plausible biological mechanism involved. We examined the association between maternal BPA exposure and DNA methylation in cord blood. We randomly selected 96 paired samples of maternal urine and infant cord blood collected from the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort. BPA levels in maternal urine were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Three cord blood samples wit

Antidepressants may mitigate the effects of prenatal maternal anxiety on infant auditory sensory gating.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal maternal anxiety has detrimental effects on the offspring's neurocognitive development, including impaired attentional function. Antidepressants are commonly used during pregnancy, yet their impact on offspring attention and their interaction with maternal anxiety has not been assessed. The authors used P50 auditory sensory gating, a putative marker of early attentional processes measurable in young infants, to assess the impact of maternal anxiety and antidepressant use. METHOD: A total of 242 mother-infant dyads were classified relative to maternal history of anxiety and

Smoke exposure, wheezing, and asthma development: a systematic review and meta-analysis in unselected birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of the role of smoking exposure in the induction of wheezing and asthma in children is important for prevention. METHODS: A systematic review of literature and a meta-analysis were conducted to identify studies on unselected prospective birth cohorts. The effect of exposure to maternal/parental smoking on the induction of current wheezing or asthma was evaluated in children aged 6 months, <6 years, and ≥6 years. Pooled odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. RESULTS: We identified 43 papers. Exposure to maternal prenatal smoking was a

Prenatal chemical exposures and the methylome: current evidence and opportunities for environmental epigenetics.

Exposure to pollutants and chemicals during critical developmental periods in early life can impact health and disease risk across the life course. Research in environmental epigenetics has provided increasing evidence that prenatal exposures affect epigenetic markers, particularly DNA methylation. In this article, we discuss the role of DNA methylation in early life programming and review evidence linking the intrauterine environment to epigenetic modifications, with a focus on exposure to tobacco smoke, metals, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. We also discuss challenges and novel approach

Prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter chemical constituents and the risk of stillbirth and the mediating role of pregnancy complications: A cohort study.

Evidence on the association of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure with stillbirth is limited and inconsistent, which is largely attributed to differences in PM2.5 constituents. Studies have found that the hazards of certain PM2.5 constituents to the fetus are comparable to or even higher than total PM2.5 mass. However, few studies have linked PM2.5 constituents to stillbirth. Moreover, the mediating role of pregnancy complications in PM2.5-related stillbirth remains unclear. To our knowledge, this study was the first to explore the individual and mixed associations of PM2.5 and its const

Considerations in the Radiologic Evaluation of the Pregnant Orthopaedic Patient.

Radiographic imaging of the pregnant patient represents a diagnostic and management dilemma for the orthopaedic surgeon. Imaging is often necessary in the setting of trauma; however, in utero radiation exposure can result in deleterious developmental effects in the embryo and fetus. The likelihood of a negative effect is proportional to the radiation dose and the gestational age of the embryo or fetus at the time of exposure. Ionizing radiation doses >100 mGy in the first trimester of pregnancy may lead to spontaneous abortion, malformation, and mental retardation. Whereas plain radiographs of

Hurricane Charley Exposure and Hazard of Preterm Delivery, Florida 2004.

Objective Hurricanes are powerful tropical storm systems with high winds which influence many health effects. Few studies have examined whether hurricane exposure is associated with preterm delivery. We aimed to estimate associations between maternal hurricane exposure and hazard of preterm delivery. Methods We used data on 342,942 singleton births from Florida Vital Statistics Records 2004-2005 to capture pregnancies at risk of delivery during the 2004 hurricane season. Maternal exposure to Hurricane Charley was assigned based on maximum wind speed in maternal county of residence. We estimate…

Bridging Differences in Cohort Analyses of the Relationship between Secondhand Smoke Exposure during Pregnancy and Birth Weight: The Transportability Framework in the ECHO Program.

BACKGROUND: Estimates for the effects of environmental exposures on health outcomes, including secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, often present considerable variability across studies. Knowledge of the reasons behind these differences can aid our understanding of effects in specific populations as well as inform practices of combining data from multiple studies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the presence of effect modification by measured sociodemographic characteristics on the effect of SHS exposure during pregnancy on birth weights that may drive differences observed across cohorts.
