OBJECTIVE: Human behaviors, thoughts, and emotions are guided by memories of the past. Thus, there can be little doubt that memory plays a fundamental role in the behaviors (e.g., binging), thoughts (e.g., body-image concerns), and emotions (e.g., guilt) that characterize eating disorders (EDs). Although a growing body of research has begun to investigate the role of memory in EDs, this literature is limited in numerous ways and has yet to be integrated into an overarching framework.
METHODS: In the present article, we provide an operational framework for characterizing different domains of m

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a common paroxysmal disorder of episodic memory. The aetiology of TGA is still unknown. Brain ischaemia, migraine, epileptic seizure, venous congestion and psychological disturbances have been proposed as pathological mechanisms. Moreover, different precipitating events are recognised in most TGA patients including physical activity, severe emotional stress, painful experiences, immersion in cold water and sexual intercourse. We describe a 54-year-old woman who presented a TGA immediately after right-left shunt of saline contrast during the execution of transo

Historically, the hippocampus has been viewed as a temporary memory structure. Consistent with the central premise of standard consolidation theory (SCT), a memory is initially hippocampus-dependent but, over time, it undergoes a consolidation process and eventually becoming represented in a distributed cortical network independent of the hippocampus. In this paper, we review evidence that is incompatible with each of the following essential features of SCT that are derived from its central premise: (1) Hippocampal damage reliably produces temporally graded retrograde amnesia, (2) all declarat

This investigation examined how prospective memory (PM) relates to cognitive abilities (i.e., executive function, attention, working memory, and retrospective memory) and brain structure in adolescents who vary in prenatal drug exposure (PDE). The sample consisted of 105 (55 female and 50 male) urban, primarily African American adolescents (mean age=15.5 years) from low socioeconomic status (SES) families. Approximately 56% (n=59) were prenatally exposed to drugs (heroin and/or cocaine) and 44% (n=46) were not prenatally exposed, but the adolescents were similar in age, gender, race, and SES.

Eye movements are predictive of successful episodic memory encoding and retrieval, but it is unclear whether they reflect the precision of retrieved memory content. Here, we examined relationships between eye fixations, memory precision and fMRI BOLD activity. At study, participants were presented with object images, each placed at a random location on an invisible circle. At test, both studied and new images were presented. Participants were instructed to make a covert recognition memory judgment to each image, recall and then signal its studied location, guessing if necessary. Simultaneous f

The brain is not idle during rest. Functional MRI (fMRI) studies have identified several resting-state networks, including the default mode network (DMN), which contains a set of cortical regions that interact with a hippocampus (HC) subsystem. Age-related alterations in the functional architecture of the DMN and HC may influence memory functions and possibly constitute a sensitive biomarker of forthcoming memory deficits. However, the exact form of DMN-HC alterations in aging and concomitant memory deficits is largely unknown. Here, using both task and resting data from 339 participants (25-8

OBJECTIVES: To examine the longitudinal association between cognitive reserve (CR)-related proxies and episodic memory in older adults, and to explore the role of sociodemographic and clinical risk factors.
METHODS: Data were drawn from 2279 participants of the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), with baseline in wave 5 (2013) and follow-up in wave 9 (2021-2022). A CR-proxy score was constructed using education, occupation, physical activity, social engagement, and loneliness. Logistic regression models were used to predict immediate and delayed recall performance at fol

Previous studies have highlighted that temporal source memory can be influenced by factors such as the individual's age and the emotional valence of the event to be remembered. In this study, we investigated how the different points of view (POVs) from which an event is presented could interact with the relationship between age-related differences and emotional valence on temporal source memory. One hundred and forty-one younger adults (aged 18-30) and 90 older adults (aged 65-74) were presented with a series of emotional videos shot from different POVs (first vs. third-person) in three sessio

BACKGROUND: Persistent symptoms attributed to Lyme borreliosis often include self-reported cognitive impairment. However, it remains unclear whether these symptoms can be substantiated by objective cognitive testing.
METHODS: For this observational study, cognitive performance was assessed in 280 adults with persistent symptoms attributed to Lyme borreliosis (as part of baseline data collected for the Dutch PLEASE study). Cognitive testing covered the five major domains: episodic memory, working memory / attention, verbal fluency, information-processing speed and executive function. Patients'

OBJECTIVES: Episodic foresight refers to the capacity to mentally travel forward in time and has been linked to a wide variety of important functional behaviours. Evidence has recently emerged that chronic opiate use is associated with deficits in this critical capacity and that these difficulties are not simply a secondary consequence of broader cognitive dysfunction. The current study aimed to better understand the circumstances in which chronic opiate users might be expected to have problems with episodic foresight, by addressing whether deficits reflect compromised scene construction, self

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients often present with prospective memory (PM) dysfunction. Forgetting to complete tasks may result in a loss of independence, limited employment prospects and anxiety, therefore, it is important to develop programs to improve PM performance in TBI patients. A strategy which may improve PM performance is implementation intentions. It involves making explicit plans specifying when, where and how one will perform a task in the future. In the present study, a group of 36 TBI patients and a group of 34 controls performed Virtual Week using either implementation in

Streptococcus agalactiae meningitis is usually observed among neonates. We present a rare case of Streptococcus agalactiae meningitis in a 33-year-old immunocompromised male patient with Burkitt lymphoma. Initially, the patient exhibited nonspecific symptoms, including postprandial vomiting, blurred vision, and episodic memory loss. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and imaging revealed meningitis. Empiric antibiotic therapy with ceftriaxone and vancomycin, followed by targeted ampicillin treatment, resulted in complete resolution. This case highlights the importance of considering unusual pa

This report describes the case of a 68-year-old woman with episodic memory impairment for 6 months. Brain magnetic resonance imaging detected multiple extra-axial variable-sized cystic lesions in the left medial temporal lobe, suprasellar cistern, and perimesencephalic cistern. The serum and cerebrospinal fluid tested positive for Taenia solium, confirming racemose neurocysticercosis. Albendazole and praziquantel were administered for 6 months and prednisolone for 1 month. After 3 months, her symptoms resolved. Despite its rarity, racemose neurocysticercosis should be considered in patients wi

Benign paroxysmal torticollis is an episodic functional disorder of unknown etiology that occurs in the early months of life in healthy individuals. The child's head tilts to one side for a few hours or days, usually without any associated symptoms. The disorder, which disappears within the first few years of life, is often misinterpreted and the patient pointlessly undergoes numerous tests. We present our series of 22 patients observed at the pediatric neurology outpatients clinic in Padova with a view to refreshing the pediatrician's memory on this frequent, benign pathology.

Music elicits powerful engagement through the generation and resolution of expectations, yet its effects on declarative memory formation remain unclear. Using predictive processing frameworks, we examined whether harmonic expectancy and prediction error modulate memory formation for concurrently presented visual stimuli. Participants listened to Bach chorales in which musical instruments probabilistically predicted consonant or dissonant endings, generating distinct expectations of outcomes. Neutral images were presented both before and after the critical musical period, and memory was tested

The human posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is routinely implicated in cognition and disease, yet its specific functional contributions remain unclear. Historically, human neuroimaging has linked the region to episodic memory and the default mode network, while a distinct non-human primate electrophysiology literature has focused on economic decision-making. Integrating anatomical evidence with these literatures, it has recently been proposed that this divergence reflects subregional organization, with dorsal PCC as a potential convergence site for value-based and memory-based decisions. Here,

Intrusive memories are a key symptom of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) has been proposed as a possible mechanism influencing intrusive memories in PTSD given its role in synaptic plasticity and memory consolidation. The BDNF Val66Met polymorphism has been linked PTSD susceptibility and episodic memory disturbances however previous research outcomes have been variable, potentially due to a failure to control for important confounds such as sex, ethnicity, BMI, developmental stage and extent of previous trauma experiences. Recent research suggests that the retrieval of autobiographical memories among cognitively healthy middle-aged and older adults is sensitive to the Apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE4) allele, a genetic marker that increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. However, whether the APOE4-associated alteration in autobiographical memory retrieval encompasses rapid (i.e. direct retrieval) or iterative (i.e. generative retrieval) processes remains unclear. In the present study, 39 APOE4 carriers and 45 non-carriers (ages 60-80) who scored within normal limits on neuropsychological testing were c

The relative influence of amyloid burden, neuronal structure and function, and prior cognitive performance on prospective memory decline among asymptomatic late middle-aged individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is currently unknown. We investigated this using longitudinal cognitive data from 122 middle-aged adults (21 "Decliners" and 101 "Stables") enrolled in the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention who underwent multimodality neuroimaging [11C-Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB), 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), and structural/functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)] 5.7 ± 1.4

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered as a potential transitional state between normal aging and dementia. Studies addressing semantic memory in patients with incipient dementia and MCI show inconsistent results. In the current report we focused on MCI and examined memory performance (semantic, episodic, and working memory) in addition to structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements. We studied 6 MCI, 6 normal controls, and 4 Alzheimer disease (AD) patients. MCI participants demonstrated normal semantic memory performance while fMRI examination revealed dist
