The Acceptability and Feasibility of Implementing an Online Educational Intervention With Nurses in a Provincial Prison Context.

BACKGROUND: Correctional nursing requires a strong knowledge base with access to continuing education (CE) to maintain and enhance competencies. Nurses working in provincial prisons have reported many challenges in accessing CE, with online learning being identified as a potential solution. Limited research was found, however, which examined the correctional context in the development and delivery of online learning for nurses. The purpose of this study was to develop an online educational intervention tailored to correctional nurses and determine the feasibility and acceptability of implement

Orthotopic Neobladder Reconstruction: Patient Selection And Perspectives.

Orthotopic neobladder (ONB) reconstruction is a continent urinary diversion procedure that may be performed in a patient with bladder cancer following a radical cystectomy. The selection of a patient for an ONB reconstruction is strict as not everyone may be suitable to undergo this complex surgery. Patients must be not only mentally competent but also physically dexterous enough to allow for appropriate neobladder training post-procedure, to achieve best urinary function. However, even with a carefully chosen patient population, various complications specific to ONB reconstruction may result.

Towards an understanding of Angelman syndrome in mice studies.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe mental retardation, absence of speech, abnormal motor coordination, abnormal EEG, and spontaneous seizure. AS is caused by a deficiency in the ubiquitin ligase E3A (Ube3a) gene product, known to play a dual role as both ubiquitin ligase and transcription coactivator. In AS animal models, multiple Ube3a substrates are accumulated in neurons. So far, studies in mouse models have either aimed at re-expressing Ube3a or manipulating downstream signaling pathways. Reintroducing Ube3a in AS mice showed promising resu

Exploring the Role of Cognitive Factors in a New Instrument for Elders' Financial Capacity Assessment.

BACKGROUND: The influence of cognitive factors on financial capacity across the dementia spectrum of cognitive aging, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been little investigated, while it has not been investigated at all in other types of dementia as well as in extended samples of elders in Greece. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate financial capacity, to develop a tool, test its psychometric properties, validate, and then test the tool in groups of healthy controls compared to elders with dementia, while examining other facets of their cognitive

The devil is in the detail: exploring the intrinsic neural mechanisms that link attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptomatology to ongoing cognition.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental condition that profoundly affects quality of life. Although mounting evidence now suggests uncontrolled mind-wandering as a core aspect of the attentional problems associated with ADHD, the neural mechanisms underpinning this deficit remains unclear. To that extent, competing views argue for (i) excessive generation of task-unrelated mental content, or (ii) deficiency in the control of task-relevant cognition. METHODS: In a cross-sectional investigation of a large neurotypical cohort (n = 184), we examined alterati

Incremental predictive validity of the Addiction Severity Index psychiatric composite score in a consecutive cohort of patients in residential treatment for drug use disorders.

BACKGROUND: The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is a widely used assessment instrument for substance abuse treatment that includes scales reflecting current status in seven potential problem areas, including psychiatric severity. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of the psychiatric composite score to predict suicide and psychiatric care after residential treatment for drug use disorders after adjusting for history of psychiatric care. METHODS: All patients treated for drug use disorders in residential treatment centers in Denmark during the years 2000-2010 with complete ASI data

A Multilevel Approach for Reducing Mental Health and Substance Use Disparities Affecting Bisexual Individuals.

Despite bisexual individuals being at increased risk for mental health and substance use problems, clinicians' ability to provide affirmative and competent care to bisexual clients is limited by their lack of bisexual-specific training. To address this common gap in training, this article provides a brief review of bisexual health disparities and the factors that influence them. Then, we describe a multi-level approach for improving the health and well-being of bisexual individuals. This approach addresses factors that influence health at the micro-level (e.g., strategies that clinicians can u

THE EFFECT OF ADAPTED SPORTS IN QUALITY OF LIFE AND BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL PROFILE OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH CEREBRAL PALSY.

OBJECTIVE: The participation in sports and recreational activities promotes inclusion and the quality of life (QOL) for people with some type of disability. This study aims to evaluate and describe the effect of adapted sports (AS) on the QOL and biopsychosocial profile of children/adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS: Forty-seven children/adolescents with CP were evaluated and referred to AS (soccer and swimming). The QOL was evaluated by the Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) and the biopsychosocial profile by the Behavior Checklist for Children/Adolescents (CBCL)

[Skills Training for Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder].

The emotionally instable personality disorder, mostly called borderline disorder, shows central abnormalities in impulse control as well as instability of mood and identity. It is composed of behaviour problems in creating relationships and in self-management, first of all by high psychophysiological tension. The prevalence of this disorder is 10 % in outpatients and 20 % in inpatients and has therefore high relevance for the medical-psychotherapeutic care system. The treatment is deemed to be complex and interminable. Regarding all evaluated techniques of treatment the best examined is the Di

[Can we assess the efficacy of psychotherapies in a clinical trial?].

Extensive evidence demonstrates that psychotherapy can be an efficacious and effective health care service for a wide range of mental health and health conditions. Recently, an important distinction between efficacy research and effectiveness research has been made within research focused on the outcome of psychotherapy. Data from both efficacy and effectiveness studies are fundamental to a complete understanding of the potential impact of a psychotherapy and the way to carry successful psychotherapeutics interventions to routine clinical practice. Efficacy studies, using randomized controlled

Early and recent psychosocial stress and telomere length in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stress has been associated with an increased risk for mental and somatic health problems across the life span. Some studies in younger adults linked this to accelerated cellular aging, indexed by shortened telomere length (TL). In older adults, the impact of psychosocial stress on TL may be different due to the lifetime exposure to competing causes of TL-shortening. This study aims to assess whether early and recent psychosocial stressors (childhood abuse, childhood adverse events, recent negative life events, and loneliness) were associated with TL in older adults. Future delivery of the Drug Interventions Programme: do the benefits justify the costs?

The Drug Interventions Programme is an initiative employed by the Home Office in 2003 to integrate the Criminal Justice System with drug treatment services with the ultimate goal of reducing acquisitive crime. Drug Action Teams employ this scheme on a local level by providing a broad range of services for misusers in the community. Although much attention has been placed on societal gains, there is an added benefit in improving the health outcomes of those referred. Opioid replacement therapy decreases illicit heroin use, reduces mortality and maintains contact with misusers allowing for psych

ADHD and offenders.

OBJECTIVES: To present the needs and psychological treatment options for offenders with ADHD. METHODS: Key papers are discussed in relation to this topic. RESULTS: Research suggests there is a disproportionately high number of individuals with ADHD involved with the Criminal Justice System. UK studies among offenders have indicated around 45% of youths and 24% of male adults screen positive for a childhood history of ADHD, 14% of whom have persisting symptoms in adulthood. Those with persisting symptoms have a significantly younger onset of offending and higher rate of recidivism. ADHD was t

Progressive neurocognitive decline in two children with Dravet syndrome, de novo SCN1A truncations and different epileptic phenotypes.

Dravet syndrome, often caused by mutations of SCN1A-gene, presents with prolonged clonic, generalized or unilateral seizures often occurring with fever during the first year of life, followed by usually severe epilepsy. The EEG, normal at the outset, later shows generalized and focal epileptic activities. The psychomotor development deteriorates, but little is known about the time course of the cognitive impairment and its relationship with seizures severity. We describe here the progressive neurocognitive decline in two children (one male), carrying de novo SCN1A truncating mutations and pres

Poverty, malnutrition, underdevelopment and cardiovascular disease: a South African perspective.

This article explores possible mechanisms to explain the known relationships between poverty, undernutrition, underdevelopment and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in developing countries. Poverty is a multidimensional concept. It is both a cause and consequence of undernutrition. The article shows how malnutrition during pregnancy could lead to low birth-weight babies, who are not only at increased risk of mental and physical underdevelopment, but also 'programmed' to be at increased risk of CVD and other non-communicable diseases in adult life. The underdevelopment leads to decreased 'human capi
