Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer, and it has numerous histologic mimics with variable prognoses and treatments. Although some immunohistochemical stains can be used for the differential diagnosis of BCC, variability and overlap in results can complicate their interpretation. Immunohistochemical staining for glioma-associated oncogene-1 (Gli-1) was performed on 26 nodular BCCs, 22 infiltrative BCCs, 9 basaloid squamous cell carcinomas, 12 desmoplastic trichoepitheliomas, 19 Merkel cell carcinomas, 11 sebaceous carcinomas, 10 cylindromas, 14 spiradenomas, 12 adenoid cyst

The national survey concerning the therapeutic strategy for carcinomas of the face published here reviews the therapeutic strategies to this everyday disease. The 30 centres included in our statistics have a combined experience of several thousand cases. 61% of these centres operate on more than 50 carcinomas per year. The following conclusions can be drawn from these data. The general national option is for treatment of the defect by flaps than by skin graft, all reconstruction situations combined. In the case of skin grafts, the retroauricular and supraclavicular sites are the most frequentl

Odontogenic myxoma and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) rarely coexist, especially in association with Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCCS). This report presents an unusual case of an NBCCS patient with simultaneous myxoma and OKC in the mandible. We introduce an innovative management strategy incorporating 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as an adjunct treatment for OKC, paired with immediate mandibular reconstruction using a fibula-free flap, following the Jaw-In-A-Day (JIAD) protocol. The report details the clinical presentation, surgical approach, and follow-up, highlighting the potential benefit

Semantic segmentation of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) from full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) images of human skin has received considerable attention in medical imaging. However, it is challenging for dermatopathologists to annotate the training data due to OCT's lack of color specificity. Very often, they are uncertain about the correctness of the annotations they made. In practice, annotations fraught with uncertainty profoundly impact the effectiveness of model training and hence the performance of BCC segmentation. To address this issue, we propose an approach to model trainin

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most prevalent human neoplasm, with constantly increasing annual incidence. Despite its slow growth, BCC is locally invasive and, if left untreated, can cause severe complications, including metastasis and death. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays a key role in electrolyte balance, atrial pressure, tissue development, homeostasis, and inflammation, but also in cancer development. After binding to its type 1 receptor (AT1R), angiotensin II (ANGII), the system's principal hormonal effector, regulates cancer pathways spanning from the formation of the initi

BACKGROUND: Colloid bodies (CB), also known as Civatte bodies, are commonly seen in inflammatory dermatoses and are thought to represent cell degeneration. No studies have investigated the incidence and clinical associations of CB in cutaneous basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The aim of this study is to assess the incidence of CB in BCC lesions and analyze their clinical associations.
METHODS: Four hundred and five sequential cases of cutaneous BCC from 396 patients diagnosed from 1/1/2023 to 12/31/2023 in our institution were studied for the presence of CB. Only cases of BCC with a single growth

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is based on clinical and dermoscopical features. In uncertain cases, innovative imaging techniques, such as reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), have been used. The main limitation of these techniques is the inability to study deep margins. HFUS (high-frequency ultrasound) and the most recent UHFUS (ultra-high-frequency ultrasound) have been used in various applications in dermatology, but they are not yet routinely used in the diagnosis of BCC. A key point in clinical practice is to find an imagin

Chronic lower leg ulcers (LLUs) are a very common and associated with a high subjective and economic burden. They can be caused by a variety of factors. We have observed a common clinical feature in patients suffering from LLUs, which ultimately proved to be basal cell carcinomas (BCCs). We have nicknamed this sign "the pink doughnut sign." The pink doughnut sign can aid in the early recognition of such BCCs, which is crucial to prevent unnecessary suffering, treatment costs, and poor local outcomes.

Canonical and non-canonical Wnt signaling pathways are involved in cell differentiation and homeostasis, but also in tumorigenesis. In fact, an exaggerated activation of Wnt signaling may promote tumor growth and invasion. We summarize the most intriguing evidence about the role of Wnt signaling in cutaneous carcinogenesis, in particular in the pathogenesis of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Wnt signaling is involved in several ways in the development of skin tumors: it may modulate the inflammatory tumor microenvironment, synergize with Sonic Hedgehog pathway in the onset of basal cell carci

Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) represents around 80% of all malignant skin cancers worldwide, constituting a substantial burden on healthcare systems. Due to excellent clearance rates (around 95%), surgery is the current gold-standard treatment. However, surgery is not always possible or preferred by patients. Numerous non-surgical therapies, sometimes combined, have been associated with promising tumor free survival rates (80-90%) in non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Most research has enrolled superficial basal cell carcinomas (sBCCs), with limited recent studies also involving low

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To investigate a possible association between the use of hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) and/or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) and the occurrence of periocular non-melanoma skin cancer.
METHODS: The files of 929 patients from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf who were surgically treated for suspected periocular malignancy were evaluated retrospectively regarding the occurrence of non-melanoma skin cancer and concomitant medication. To be able to put the data in an overall context, we also analyzed age-matched routine data of the DAK-Gesundhe

Basaloid follicular hamartomas (BFH) are benign small basaloid skin tumors that can present as solitary or multiple lesions. Congenital BFH lesions arranged in a segmental distribution have been described, suggesting they derive from a somatic post-zygotic mutational event. Previously, BFH were described in Happle-Tinschert syndrome, which results from a post-zygotic SMO variant and is characterized by segmental BFH with variable involvement of the teeth, skeleton, and central nervous system. Here, we describe two patients with isolated segmental BFH and no systemic involvement. Paired whole e

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is a growing need for effective topical treatments for basal cell carcinoma (BCC). By altering the skin barrier, ablative fractional lasers (AFLs) enhance cutaneous uptake of the synergistic chemotherapeutic agents, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). In our recently reported clinical trial, AFL-assisted delivery of cisplatin and 5-FU showed favorable short-term clearance rates of 95% with good cosmetic results at 3 months. This follow-up study assessed sustained tumor clearance, safety, and cosmesis in the same patient cohort, observed 6- and 12-months postt

Despite being one of the most efficacious drugs used in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), imiquimod has limited cutaneous permeation. The current work presents the development of polyvinylpyrrolidone-co-vinyl acetate (PVPVA) microneedles loaded with imiquimod for improving intradermal delivery of imiquimod for the treatment of nodular BCC. In vitro permeation studies, using full thickness ex vivo porcine skin were used to evaluate the effectiveness of these imiquimod loaded polymeric microneedles in comparison to the topical application of commercial Aldara™ cream. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an autosomal dominant disease, characterized by the formation of heterotopic ossification (HO) in muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Flare-ups, an inflammatory process that often precedes the formation of HO, can occur spontaneously, but trauma is also a common trigger. It is not known whether radiotherapy, especially in higher doses, might cause sufficient trauma or inflammation to trigger a flare-up and subsequent HO in FOP patients. We report the case of a patient undergoing radiotherapy for the treatment of a 1-cm-wide basal cell carcinoma (BCC)

A man in his early 60s with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) and an extensive history of non-melanoma skin cancer presented with multiple pearly, erythematous papules on his face, head, trunk and extremities, clinically consistent with basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Due to the numerous BCC and history of multiple and early-onset BCC, examination was concerning for a hereditary BCC syndrome. Subsequent histopathology confirmed BCC. Genetic testing was negative for basal cell nevus syndrome and clinical findings were inconsistent with other known hereditary BCC syndromes. There have been reports of

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most common nonmelanoma skin cancers. Dermoscopy is an indispensable tool to differentiate superficial BCC from other subtypes and between pigmented and not pigmented ones. Although surgery is considered the gold-standard therapy, new current pharmacological options are available and focus on tumor eradication, increasing cosmetic results and functionality. 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a cytostatic drug associated with antimetabolite effects and already approved as monotherapy for superficial BCCs treatment. A recent formulation combining of 5-FU 0.5% with sali
