A multidisciplinary approach to providing blended diet within the acute setting.

BACKGROUND: Due to advances in medical care, including nutrition and hydration, children with neurological impairment are surviving longer. Many of these children are fed using a commercial formula via an enteral feeding tube. However, families are now becoming more interested in administering blended diet via their child's gastrostomy in a bid to reduce often significant gastrointestinal symptoms including reflux, constipation, gagging and retching post fundoplication. AIMS: To describe the process undertaken by the authors' short-life working group to create safe, robust pathways to enable

Quality of life, food choice and meal patterns - field report of a practitioner.

Quality of life is defined as the result of combining personal resources, control of the environment, personal values, and actual living conditions. Balanced nutrition is an important condition for quality of life, health and well-being. During the course of life everyone develops his very individual biography of eating. This includes eating habits, food choice, and meal patterns. The process of aging is accompanied by hardly recognizable physiological, emotional, social, and environmental changes. Ignoring these changes can lead to malnutrition and nutrition-related problems and thus reduce h

Cocreating composite digital stories to share research findings with minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities: a reflective guide.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have an ethical responsibility to share their findings with their studies' participants and those who can influence policy and practice. Storytelling is an arts-based approach increasingly used in nursing research to share findings, but little has been written about how to use the approach in participatory research involving people from minority ethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. AIM: To present a guide to cocreating digital stories to share research findings with minority ethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. DISCUSSION: The aut

Nursing Intervention to Prevent and Manage Delirium in Critically Ill Patients: A Scoping Review.

Delirium is an acute neuropsychiatric syndrome of multifactorial etiology with a high incidence in people admitted to intensive care units. In addition to reversible impairment of cognitive processes, it may be associated with changes in thinking and perception. If, in the past, it was considered an expected complication of severe disease, nowadays, delirium is associated with a poor short-term and long-term prognosis. Knowing that its prevention and early identification can reduce morbidity, mortality, and health costs, it is vital to investigate nursing interventions focused on delirium in c

Experiences of rural nurses with emergency patient transport in a resource limited setting.

BACKGROUND: Registered nurses are primary care providers during most patient transfers from rural areas. Various local conditions and circumstances impact the provision of nursing care prior to and during transportation. These include clinic staffing, uneven access to functioning equipment and other necessary infrastructure across settings, the wide-ranging clinical need for specialty care, and complex social and interpersonal circumstances that play a role in care-seeking and transport decision-making. This study explored the experiences of nurses with emergency patient transport in rural hea

Smokeless Tobacco Cessation in an Emergency Room in Rural West Virginia.

BACKGROUND: Emergency room nurses have a strong influence on the population of smokeless tobacco users. If healthcare providers address patient's tobacco use by using a brief intervention strategy (one minute or less), it increases the quit attempt rate threefold. The object of this study is to assess the effectiveness of asynchronous internet based brief tobacco intervention training with rural emergency room nurses. METHODS: A 1-h asynchronous training session on smokeless tobacco use and the 2-A and 1-R (Ask, Advise, and Refer) brief tobacco intervention strategy were given to 13 emergency

Spanish Validation of Pediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain.

BACKGROUND: Although pain is considered a sign/symptom codified by ICD-10, it is not frequently found in the clinical reports of children who have suffered pain due to disease or interventions. It has a negative effect on their well-being, affecting different spheres of their life. Having questionnaires adapted and validated in different languages makes it possible to compare results between different centers and countries, as well as to adapt training to the deficits found in a given population. AIM: To validate the Spanish version of Pediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attittudes Survey Regardin

The development of a new cardiac rehabilitation needs assessment tool (CRNAT) for individualised secondary prevention.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention are evidence-based strategies to reduce the risk of recurrent cardiac events but are underutilised. New approaches are required to improve uptake. METHODS: A new cardiac rehabilitation needs assessment tool (CRNAT), for use by cardiology ward nurses, was developed and refined in collaboration with stakeholders through action research. The tool documented patients' risk factors, initiated a discussion about secondary prevention and linked patients to post-discharge follow-up. The initial version of the tool was developed through consu

Communication-focused interventions to reduce missed nursing care: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care (MNC) is associated with adverse patient outcomes, and communication problems may contribute to care omissions. Evidence on interventions that explicitly target communication to reduce MNC remains unclear. PURPOSE: To synthesize interventional evidence on communication-focused strategies intended to reduce MNC or specific nursing care omissions. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review of six databases and gray-literature sources. Randomized, quasi-experimental, and pre-experimental studies involving nursing staff in health institutions were eli

Management of children with swallowing disorders.

Early diagnosis and treatment of feeding and swallowing problems may improve a child's health status and quality of life and reduce health care costs. Pediatric nurse practitioners have a salient role in the early diagnosis of children at risk for feeding and swallowing problems. Increased knowledge about the normal swallowing process, children at risk for feeding and swallowing disorders, and associated symptoms enhances early diagnosis and treatment. The child's general health history and physical evaluation, along with additional diagnostic tests, provide the basis for the formulation of an

The complicated elderly trauma patient: a case study analysis.

SB validated many aspects of elderly trauma research and physiology. Although he had a prolonged length of stay and several complications, he survived multiple injuries and had a positive outcome. Exact causes for his complications and processes cannot be separated into degenerative or injury-related and are thus difficult to identify. With a review of aging physiology and SB's history, it is clear that his course and physiological responses to treatments were affected by his age and ability to respond to the demands placed on him. (See Table 5 for pertinent nursing diagnoses for SB.) There ar
