Sympathetically maintained pain presenting first as temporomandibular disorder, then as parotid dysfunction.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic condition characterized by intense pain, swelling, redness, hypersensitivity and additional sudomotor effects. In all 13 cases of CRPS in the head and neck region reported in the literature, nerve injury was identified as the etiology for pain initiation. In this article, we present the case of a 30-year-old female patient with sympathetically maintained pain without apparent nerve injury. Her main symptoms--left-side preauricular pain and inability to open her mouth wide--mimicked temporomandibular joint arthralgia and myofascial pain of the

Scar neuroma infiltration to treat post-surgical first bite syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: First bite syndrome (FBS) is an uncommon but often debilitating complication after head and neck surgeries, particularly those that involve or affect the cervical sympathetic chain. FBS is characterized by sudden, severe, and often cramping or electric shock-like pain in the region of the parotid gland, which may become chronic. Current treatment recommendations for FBS-related pain include pharmacologic agents, muscle relaxants, anti-neuropathic and anti-inflammatory agents, oral rehabilitation, and infiltration of anesthetics and botulinum toxin; most patients require systemic

Antiangiogenic Potential of Beneficial Sterols from Parotoid Gland Secretion of Indian Common Toads (Duttaphrynus melanostictus) in the Coastal Region of the Indian Subcontinent: An In Vivo to In Silico Approach.

The toxins of the Bufonid toads have been used formerly as ethnomedicine to treat different diseases, including chronic hepatitis, hypertension, and multiple cancers. Thus, toads' venom has a great impact on traditional health care. However, the main emphasis of this study is to identify natural components present in toad parotoid gland secretion and evaluate their antiangiogenic effects. Sterol-rich extracts of parotoid gland secretions were isolated in an ethyl acetate medium from a natural population of Indian common toads (Duttaphrynus melanostictus) from the coastal region (Purba Medinipu

Radiation dose reduction using spectral shaping in pediatric non-contrast sinus CT.

BACKGROUND: CT is the standard imaging technique to evaluate pediatric sinuses. Given the potential risks of radiation exposure in children, it is important to reduce pediatric CT dose and maintain image quality. OBJECTIVE: To study the utility of spectral shaping with tin filtration to improve dose efficiency for pediatric sinus CT exams. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A head phantom was scanned on a commercial dual-source CT using a conventional protocol (120 kV) and a proposed 100 kV with a 0.4-mm tin filter (Sn100 kV) protocol for comparison. Entrance point dose (EPD) of eye and parotid gland re

Optical nerve identification in head and neck surgery after Er:YAG laser ablation.

Facial nerve function may be hampered by iatrogenic damage during head and neck laser surgery procedures. Optical techniques can serve as a basis for feedback-controlled tissue-specific laser surgery on the jaw bone and the parotid gland. In order to preserve nerve tissue during laser surgery, the alteration of optical tissue properties through laser-tissue interactions have to be taken into account. It was the aim of this study to evaluate the viability of optical tissue differentiation through diffuse reflectance spectroscopy after exposure to laser light as a basis for a feedback system for

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of a case of HIV-associated anaplastic myeloma.

Plasma cell neoplasia occurs much less frequently than high-grade B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma in HIV-infected patients, but is nevertheless an AIDS-associated malignancy. In this report, we describe the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) findings of a mass in the left parotid region with plasmablastic features that occurred in a 41-yr-old HIV-infected homosexual man whom we diagnosed as having anaplastic myeloma. The patient had normochromic, normocytic anemia with a hematocrit of 21%, a white blood count of 2.2 x 10(9)/l with 76% neutrophils, and a CD4 count of 31%. He also had elevated levels of …

Sialochemical profile of X-irradiated major salivary glands in the rat.

The purpose of this study was to examine various sialochemical parameters in parotid (P) and submandibular (SM) secreted saliva of irradiated rats. Various doses of radiation from 2.5 to 15 Gy were administered to the head and neck region and the saliva was evaluated for its amylase activity and the concentration of sodium (Na), potassium (K) and total protein. Saliva samples containing equal amounts of proteins were also electrophoresed on separatory SDS gels, silver-stained and examined for possible qualitative alterations. The total protein concentrations of P saliva showed a radiation dose

Molecular cloning and expression of collagenase-3, a novel human matrix metalloproteinase produced by breast carcinomas.

A cDNA coding for a new human matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) has been cloned from a cDNA library derived from a breast tumor. The isolated cDNA contains an open reading frame coding for a polypeptide of 471 amino acids. The predicted protein sequence displays extensive similarity to the previously known MMPs and presents all the structural features characteristic of the members of this protein family, including the well conserved PRCGXPD motif, involved in the latency of the enzyme and the zinc-binding domain (HEXGHXXXXXHS). In addition, this novel human MMP contains in its amino acid sequence

External radiolabelling of components of pellicle on human enamel and cementum.

Enamel and cementum pellicles form by different adsorption of salivary and serum components to the tooth surface. The authors compared the constituents of surface pellicle formed on human enamel and cementum under three conditions: (1) natural pellicle, present on extracted teeth, which was formed by prolonged exposure to human salivary and serum components in vivo; (2) short-term in-vivo pellicle, formed by exposing enamel and cementum slabs to the oral environment for 0-60 min; (3) in-vivo pellicle, formed by incubating enamel and cementum slabs in a 1:1 mixture of parotid and submandibular/

Differential expression of homing receptors and vascular addressins in tonsils and draining lymph nodes: Effect of Brucella infection in sheep.

The differential expression of homing receptors (HR) and complementary vascular addressins was studied in T and B lymphocytes from ovine tonsils and draining lymph nodes (LN) in uninfected and Brucella melitensis-infected sheep. In uninfected sheep, CD4+CD25+ T cells expressed proportionally more L-selectin and beta1 integrin than beta7 integrin in pharyngeal and palatine tonsils and in parotid LN (PLN), retropharyngeal LN (RLN) and the peripheral prescapular LN (PSLN). In contrast, memory CD4+CD45RA- T cells expressed an equivalent proportion of the three HR in PLN and PSLN, whereas beta1 and

Prospective non-invasive evaluation of CXCR4 expression for the diagnosis of MALT lymphoma using [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor-PET/MRI.

UNLABELLED: MALT lymphomas express the chemokine receptor CXCR4 on a regular basis, and [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor-PET has been shown to quantify CXCR4 expression non-invasively. We, therefore, aimed to evaluate [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor-PET/MRI for the non-invasive assessment of MALT lymphomas. METHODS: We included 36 MALT lymphoma patients, who had not undergone previous systemic or radiation therapy, in our prospective, IRB-approved, proof-of-concept study. Involved anatomic regions were the orbit (n=14), stomach (n=10), lungs (n=5), and other sites (soft-tissues n=3; adrenal gland, tonsils, parotid gl

Patterns of treatment failure in salivary gland cancers.

AIM: The purpose of the study was to publish our experience of salivary gland cancer treatment with large number of patients treated at a single institution. BACKGROUND: Salivary gland cancers are rare tumors of the head and neck representing about 5% of cancers in that region and about 0.5% of all malignancies. Due to the rarity of the disease, most of the studies regarding treatment outcome consist of low number of patients, thus making it difficult to draw conclusions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 115 patients with primary salivary gland cancer were included in a retrospective study. The subsite

Gene Expansion and Regulatory Rewiring Shape Sex-Biased Evolution of the Mouse Submandibular Gland Secretome.

Mammalian saliva plays essential roles in digestion, immunity, and host-microbiome interactions, yet its protein composition varies across species and sexes. The evolutionary mechanisms underlying this molecular diversity remain poorly understood. Here, we compared mouse and human salivary gland secretomes at genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic levels to understand how saliva composition evolves. We performed RNA-seq analysis of the major mouse salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual), liver and pancreas from both sexes, compared them with reanalyzed previously published hum
