Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Lung Pathology.

Artificial intelligence/machine learning tools are being created for use in pathology. Some examples related to lung pathology include acid-fast stain evaluation, programmed death ligand-1 (PDL-1) interpretation, evaluating histologic patterns of non-small-cell lung carcinoma, evaluating histologic features in mesothelioma associated with adverse outcomes, predicting response to anti-PDL-1 therapy from hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides, evaluation of tumor microenvironment, evaluating patterns of interstitial lung disease, nondestructive methods for tissue evaluation, and others. There are …

Spectrum of Liver Pathology in Dyskeratosis Congenita.

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare multisystemic disorder associated with defective telomere maintenance. Frequent clinical manifestations of DC include reticular skin pigmentation, dystrophic nails, oral leukoplakia, and bone marrow failure. Hepatic disturbances are reported to occur in 7% of DC patients. This study aimed to evaluate the histopathologic spectrum of hepatic involvement in this disorder. DC patients with liver tissue in the pathology database at Boston Children's Hospital from 1995 to 2022 were identified. Clinical and pathologic information was documented. Thirteen specimen…

Patterns of placental pathology associated with preeclampsia.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) is commonly observed in early onset preeclampsia, but less prevalent in late onset preeclampsia. The purpose of our analysis was to investigate patterns of placental pathology in preeclampsia. METHODS: Electronic health records for all singleton livebirths from 2009 to 2018 at a single institution with a diagnosis of preeclampsia were obtained. Text searching was used to obtain placental data from pathology reports, including lesions of MVM, fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM), chronic inflammation (CI), and acute inflammation (AI). Placental p…

Placental Pathology Findings in Unexplained Pregnancy Losses.

There are approximately 5 million pregnancies per year in the USA, with 1 million ending in miscarriage (a loss occurring prior to 20 weeks of gestation) and over 20,000 ending in stillbirth at or beyond 20 weeks of gestation. As many as 50% of these losses are unexplained. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of expanding the placental pathology diagnostic categories to include the explicit categories of (1) dysmorphic chorionic villi and (2) small placenta in examining previously unexplained losses. Using a clinical database of 1256 previously unexplained losses at 6-43 weeks of gestatio…

Pathology and Treatment of Psoriasis Using Nanoformulations.

Psoriasis (PSO) is an inflammatory skin condition that causes a variety of diseases and significantly decreases the life characteristics of patients, and substantially diminishes patients' quality of life. PSO usually impairs the skin and is linked to various disorders. Inflammation pathology does not only damage psoriatic skin; it shows how PSO impinges other body parts. Many variables interact with one another and can impact the etiology of psoriasis directly or indirectly. PSO has an effect on approximately 2% of the world's population, and significant progress has been made in comprehendin…

MR Imaging of Mimics of Adnexal Pathology.

Mimics of adnexal masses can include uterine leiomyomas, intraperitoneal cystic and solid masses of mesenteric or gastrointestinal origin, and extraperitoneal cystic and solid masses. When a pelvic mass is discovered on imaging, a radiologist should recognize these mimics to avoid mischaracterization of a mass as ovarian for optimal patient management. Knowledge of pelvic anatomy, determining whether a mass is intraperitoneal or extraperitoneal, and troubleshooting with MR imaging can help determine the etiology and origin of a pelvic mass. Imaging characteristics and keys to diagnosis of thes

The role of autophagy in cardiovascular pathology.

Macroautophagy/autophagy is a conserved catabolic recycling pathway in which cytoplasmic components are sequestered, degraded, and recycled to survive various stress conditions. Autophagy dysregulation has been observed and linked with the development and progression of several pathologies, including cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death in the developed world. In this review, we aim to provide a broad understanding of the different molecular factors that govern autophagy regulation and how these mechanisms are involved in the development of specific cardiovascular pathologies, i

[The pathology of cervical cancer - molecular tests].

Cervical cancer is the 4th in incidence and mortality rate among women worldwide. Histologically the majority of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, with a minor proportion of adenocarcinomas. Cervical carcinogenesis can be followed through different steps of precancerous lesions, previously named dysplasias (mild, moderate and severe), by recently used terminology of the Bethesda classification as LSIL (low-grade squamous epithelial lesion) and HSIL (high-grade squamous epithelial lesion) before progression to invasive cancer by cytological screening together and controlled by hist

The human microbiome in disease and pathology.

This narrative review seeks to examine the relationships between bacterial microbiomes and infectious disease. This is achieved by detailing how different human host microbiomes develop and function, from the earliest infant acquisitions of maternal and environmental species through to the full development of microbiomes by adulthood. Communication between bacterial species or communities of species within and outside of the microbiome is a factor in both maintenance of homeostasis and management of threats from the external environment. Dysbiosis of this homeostasis is key to understanding th

l-carnitine: Nutrition, pathology, and health benefits.

Carnitine is a medically needful nutrient that contributes in the production of energy and the metabolism of fatty acids. Bioavailability is higher in vegetarians than in people who eat meat. Deficits in carnitine transporters occur as a result of genetic mutations or in combination with other illnesses such like hepatic or renal disease. Carnitine deficit can arise in diseases such endocrine maladies, cardiomyopathy, diabetes, malnutrition, aging, sepsis, and cirrhosis due to abnormalities in carnitine regulation. The exogenously provided molecule is obviously useful in people with primary ca

[Hepatic and Peritoneal Histoplasmosis Simulating Another Pathology].

Histoplasmosis is the most frequent endemic systemic mycosis in Argentina. Most cases are asymptomatic or present mild respiratory manifestations, which resolve spontaneously; however, occasionally they present severe clinical forms when immunity is compromised. Although liver involvement in disseminated infection is well known, focal hepatic histoplasmosis is extremely rare. We present the case of a patient with focal granulomatous hepatitis and peritoneal involvement due to Histoplasma capsulatum simulating a primary liver neoplasm, who underwent surgery.

Genital self-mutilation: A challenging pathology (Review).

Genital self-mutilation is a pathology that leads to numerous and important discussions, rarely presented in the medical literature. There have been many attempts to explain the reasons behind these medical phenomena, but single cases have been generally reported, making it extremely difficult to draw valid conclusions. It is acknowledged that there are psychotic and non-psychotic causes, from psychiatric problems and sexual identity disorders to cultural or religious reasons, alcohol or recreational drug consumption, unconventional types of sexual satisfaction or self-satisfaction. Recent the…

Hybrid Surgery to Manage Aortic Arch Pathology.

Background and Objectives: Aortic arch disease is still a high-risk surgical challenge despite major advances both in surgical and anesthesiological management. A combined surgical and endovascular approach has been proposed for aortic arch disease treatment to avoid hypothermia and circulatory arrest in high-risk patients. Materials and Methods: Between June 2004 and June 2021, 112 patients were referred to our department for aortic arch surgery; 38 (33.9%) patients underwent supra-aortic debranching and endovascular treatment. Of these, 21 (55%) patients underwent type I aortic arch hybrid d

Glomerulotubular pathology in dogs with subclinical ehrlichiosis.

Subclinical stage of ehrlichiosis is characterized by absence of clinical or laboratory alterations; however, it could lead to silent glomerular/tubular changes and contribute significantly to renal failure in humans and animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate glomerular and tubular alterations in dogs with subclinical ehrlichiosis. We evaluated renal biopsies of 14 bitches with subclinical ehrlichiosis and 11 control dogs. Samples were obtained from the left kidney, and the tissue obtained was divided for light microscopy, immunofluorescence, and transmission electron microscopy. Abnor
