OBJECTIVE: To describe recognition (letter) acuity at age 10 years in eyes with and without retinal residua of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
DESIGN: Presence and severity of ROP residua were documented by a study ophthalmologist. Masked testers measured monocular recognition visual acuity (Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study) when the children were 10 years old. Two hundred forty-seven of 255 surviving Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity (CRYO-ROP) randomized trial patients participated. A reference group of 102 of 104 Philadelphia-based CRYO-ROP study participants who di

PURPOSE: No prospective double-masked study has evaluated whether low astigmatism benefits or harms patients with presbyopia, whose intermediate and near vision might theoretically benefit from enhanced depth of focus provided by astigmatism. The purpose of the first Myopic Astigmatism and Presbyopia (MAP I) study was to determine whether low myopic astigmatism enhances or harms the visual acuity, stereopsis, or quality of life in patients with presbyopia.
DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, double-masked, crossover design clinical trial.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with presbyopia aged 45 to 68

RATIONALE: Ischemic optic neuropathy (ION), due to diseases of the arteries supplying the optic nerve, is an ischemic damage of the optic nerve. This report highlights a case with monocular decreasing visual acuity caused by dissection of the internal carotid artery (ICA), which is a relatively rare cause for ION.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old woman presented with a decreasing visual acuity and defected visual field in the right eye for 1 week. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/400 in the right eye, and 20/20 in the left eye. In the right eye, the pupil showed little reaction t

BACKGROUND: The study was designed to prospectively evaluate the driving habits of patients with retinal diseases, who were referred to the specialised retinal ambulatory care center of the Landesaugenklinik Salzburg. The main purpose of this study was to compare the legal requirements for visual acuity, as currently valid in Austria and Germany for driving motor vehicles, with the results found in this patients cohort and to analyse driving patterns of the patients with valid licenses. With these data, it seems possible to suggest a suitable time for a legally mandatory eye examination as to

Pseudo-Foster Kennedy syndrome is a rare condition characterized by unilateral papilledema with contralateral optic atrophy in the absence of an intracranial mass causing direct compression of the optic nerve. We here report the case of a 75-year-old overweight female patient (BMI 30 kg/m2), with poorly controlled hypertension, who presented with decreased visual acuity. The patient reported headaches evolving over 2 months. Ophthalmologic examination showed papilledema in the right eye and optic nerve atrophy in the left eye. Physical examination revealed poorly controlled arterial hypertensi

Past research has reported deficits on reaching and grasping tasks in adults with amblyopia and degraded stereoacuity, but less is known about visuomotor deficits in children-specifically, for complex tasks that require movement sequencing. This study therefore compared the visuomotor performance in 21 children with abnormal binocular vision (patient group) due to amblyopia and/or strabismus to that of 236 children with normal binocular vision development (control group) ages 5-14 years. Visual acuity, stereoacuity, and hand-movement kinematics on a bead-threading task were assessed. The patie

Herein, the authors report a case of lacrimal gland ductal cyst infection presenting as acute orbital cellulitis with an abscess. A 45-year-old man without any history of trauma and a specific medical history presented with progressive painful periorbital swelling in the left eye and diplopia. At the first visit, the patient showed a best-corrected visual acuity of 0.2; erythematous swelling of the upper eyelid; superficial punctate keratitis, severe conjunctival chemosis in the left eye; and pus in the lateral canthal area. The patient had binocular diplopia and left eyeball movement limitati

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsular clarity is important for long-term visual gain. Postoperative visual acuity could be reduced due to posterior capsular or intraocular lens opacification, which occur months or years after cataract surgery. We report early occurrence of posterior capsular calcification without opacification of intraocular lens.
CASE: We report the case of a 78-year-old male who had undergone phacoemulsification with implantation of hydrophilic intraocular lens (IOL) in the left eye for cataract. The patient was non-diabetic, and the surgical procedure was uneventful. On the third

A patient with symptomatic trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia (TAC) provides a chance to understand the pathophysiology and anatomic correlates of TAC. A 28-year-old woman experienced intermittent sharp and excruciating pain over her right temporal, ear and neck regions for 3 days. The headaches lasted 10-20 minutes each, occurred 1-2 times a day, and were accompanied by prominent ipsilateral lacrimation and conjunctival injection. The patient had hiccups, 4-limb numbness and impaired visual acuity in both eyes. She had also had 3 episodes of left-side optic neuritis in the past half year. Neuro
