Light enhances or disrupts circadian rhythms, depending on the timing of exposure. Circadian disruption contributes to poor health outcomes that increase mortality risk. Whether personal light exposure predicts mortality risk has not been established. We therefore investigated whether personal day and night light, and light patterns that disrupt circadian rhythms, predicted mortality risk. UK Biobank participants (N = 88,905, 62.4 ± 7.8 y, 57% female) wore light sensors for 1 wk. Day and night light exposures were defined by factor analysis of 24-h light profiles. The lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) is an ancient, octoploid fish faced with conservation challenges across its range in North America, but a lack of genomic resources has hindered molecular research in the species. To support such research, we created a transcriptomic database from 13 tissues: brain, esophagus, gill, head kidney, heart, white muscle, liver, glandular stomach, muscular stomach, anterior intestine, pyloric cecum, spiral valve and rectum. The transcriptomes for each tissue were sequenced and assembled individually from a mean of 98.3 million (±38.9 million SD) reads each. I

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are organic pollutants widely detected in various environmental media due to their high persistence and bioaccumulation. PBDE-induced visual impairment and neurotoxicity were previously demonstrated using zebrafish (Danio rerio) models, and recent research reported the phenotypic depigmentation effect of PBDEs at high concentrations on zebrafish, but whether those effects are still present at environment-relevant levels is still unclear. Herein, we performed both phenotypic examination and mechanism investigation in zebrafish embryos (48 hpf) and larvae (

Melatonin (MEL) is an indole hormone synthesized and secreted by the pineal gland at night, which is involved in the regulation of body mass and thermogenesis in small mammals. To test the effects of exogenous MEL on body mass and thermogenic ability in two different red-backed vole (Eothenomys miletus) populations from two different regions (Kunming [KM] and Dali [DL]) with different annual variation in climatic variables, such as temperature, sunshine and rainfall. we traced the changes of energy balance in E. miletus from KM and DL, which were placed at 25 ± 1°C with photoperiod of 12 L:12

OsiCRY2 is involved in light-regulated plant development and plays a role in regulating photomorphogenesis, plant height, flowering and most strikingly partial photomorphogenesis in dark. Cryptochrome 2 (CRY2), the blue/UV-A light photoreceptor in plants, has been reported to regulate photoperiod-dependent flowering and seedling photomorphogenesis (under low-intensity light). Among monocots, CRY2 has been reported from japonica rice, wheat, sorghum and barley. The two sub-species of rice, indica and japonica, exhibit a high degree of genetic variation and morphological and physiological differ

The teleost zebrafish (Danio rerio), an established model for human skeletal diseases, is reared under controlled conditions with defined parameters for temperature and photoperiod. Studies aimed at defining the proper rearing density have been performed with regard to behavioural and physiological stress response, sex ratio and reproduction. Studies concerning the effect of rearing density on the skeletal phenotype are lacking. This study analyses the response of the skeleton to different rearing densities and describes the skeletal deformities. Wild-type zebrafish were reared up to 30 dpf (d

Lighting regimes are possibly used as a strategy to improve rabbit production in tropical regions; on this background, this study was conducted to assess the possible role of different light (L):dark (D) regimes in improving growing New Zealand white rabbit's performance. Sixty-four growing rabbits were randomly divided into four groups. Rabbits of the first group (C) were exposed to 12 h of light (from 10.00 to 22.00 h). Rabbits of the second group (T1) were exposed to 12 h of light (from 22.00 to 10.00 h). The third group (T2) was exposed to 8 h of light (from 10.00 to 18.00 h), while the fo

During surveys for postharvest diseases of apple conducted in Washington State, an unknown fruit rot was observed on stored apple fruit collected from commercial fruit packinghouses. This disease was present in 66 of the 179 grower lots sampled, accounting for an average 1 to 3% of the total decayed fruit sampled. The disease appeared to originate from infection of wounds on the fruit skin. Lesions were brown and decayed tissues were spongy. A Lambertella sp. was consistently isolated from the decayed fruit. Sequences of the fungus and those of Lambertella corni-maris in GenBank differed by 0

Since the late 1980s, gonadotropins have been isolated and characterized in several fish species, but specific immunoassays for the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) have only been developed for a few. The present study reports the development and use of a specific and homologous competitive ELISA for measuring FSH in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) using a recombinant FSH and its specific antiserum. Recombinant European sea bass FSHβ and FSH heterodimer were produced in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris and a baculovirus expression system, respectively. Specific polyclonal an

(1) Melatonin is involved in the control of intraocular pressure during the night and day photoperiod. We have investigated the receptor that regulates intraocular pressure in New Zealand white rabbits by means of agonists and antagonists of melatonin receptors. (2) Melatonin and its analogues: 2-Phe-melatonin, 6-Cl-melatonin, 2-I-melatonin, 5- methoxycarbonylamino-N-acetyltryptamine (5-MCA-NAT) and N-acetyltryptamine all produced a reduction in intraocular pressure. Dose-response analysis for these compounds gave pD(2) values of 9.3+/-0.24 for melatonin; 9.0+/-0.09 for 6-Cl-melatonin; 9.0+/-0

This study examined whether cold, short day or melatonin causes reproductive regression and stimulates nonshivering thermogenesis in a subarctic rodent Clethrionomys rutilus. Red-backed voles born and raised at 23 degrees C and 22 h light per day (LD 22:2) at Fairbanks, Alaska (65 degrees N) were exposed in one of six groups to: 1) long day (LD 22:2), 23 degrees C, injected daily with melatonin or saline 2 h before lights out, 2) long day, 3 degrees C, injected daily with melatonin or saline, 3) short day (LD 8:16), 23 degrees C or 3 degrees C. Voles were tested for nonshivering thermogenesis

The predatory soil mites Blattisocius mali and Stratiolaelaps scimitus share similar prey and occupy similar habitats. This study explores intraguild predation (IGP) by various life stages of B. mali on the developmental stages of S. scimitus across different starvation periods, and their predation preference for conspecific and heterospecific eggs or larvae in the absence of shared prey at 25 °C, 85 ± 5% RH, and a 16 L:8D photoperiod. All feeding developmental stages of B. mali consumed S. scimitus eggs and larvae; however, they did not kill S. scimitus deutonymphs or later developmental stag

Selective breeding of yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata) is expanding in Japan, increasing the demand for practical reproductive control tools in commercial aquaculture to reduce genetic risks from escapees. Slowing early gonadal development through environmental manipulation may support future sterilization strategies, particularly when combined with other techniques. This study aimed to examine somatic growth and early gonadal development in juvenile yellowtail reared under continuous darkness (0L:24D). Juveniles were reared under 0L:24D or a 12L:12D photoperiod (control) and sampled at Wee

Large herbivores play a central role in dryland ecosystems, influencing vegetation dynamics, nutrient cycling, and trophic interactions. While they are adapted to cope with harsh climates, their persistence is increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures. However, the behavioural strategies they use to cope with these combined environmental challenges remain understudied. Using multi-year accelerometer data from springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), and common eland (Taurotragus oryx) in northern Namibia, we examined diel and seasonal behaviour in r

This review addresses advances, directions and opportunities for research on sheep reproduction in the context of the global challenges of food security and climate change, and demand for 'clean, green and ethical' (CGE) animal management. The foundation of CGE management is an understanding of the physiological processes through which the reproductive system responds to changes in the animal's environment. These days, to the main environmental factors (photoperiod, nutrition, pheromones), we need to add stress from extreme weather events. With respect to nutrition in rams, we now have a deepe
