We present a postural analysis of diaphragm function using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The main aim of the study was to identify changes in diaphragm motion and shape when postural demands on the body were increased (loading applied to a distal part of the extended lower extremities against the flexion of the hips was used). Sixteen healthy subjects were compared with 17 subjects suffering from chronic low back pain and in whom structural spine disorders had been identified. Two sets of features were calculated from MRI recordings: dynamic parameters reflecting diaphragm action, and stat

BACKGROUND: Although significant progress has been achieved in developing sensory augmentation methods to improve standing balance, attempts to extend this research to locomotion have been quite limited in scope. The goal of this study was to characterize the effects of two real-time feedback displays on locomotor performance during four gait-based tasks ranging in difficulty.
METHODS: Seven subjects with vestibular deficits used a trunk-based vibrotactile feedback system that provided real-time feedback regarding their medial-lateral (M/L) trunk tilt when they exceeded a subject-specific pre

Landing from jumps is one of the main causes of injury within dance. A number of studies have reported a negative effect of shoe midsole thickness on lower limb kinematics during running due to the reduction in afferent sensory outputs from the foot's epithelium. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of varying midsole thicknesses in dance shoes on dynamic postural stability during a single-leg landing. Twenty-eight female undergraduate dance participants volunteered for the study. They carried out three trials under four conditions: barefoot and in ballet flats (2 mm midsole

Of 32 children with birth brachial plexus injury, 31 had postural control deficits, including asymmetrical posture and atypical movements. Management of children with birth brachial plexus injury should address motor development of the entire body, not merely the affected extremity.

BACKGROUND: Impairment of the arterial baroreflex causes orthostatic hypotension. Arterial baroreceptor sensitivity degrades with age. Thus, an impaired baroreceptor plays a pivotal role in orthostatic hypotension in most elderly patients. There is no effective treatment for orthostatic hypotension. The aims of this investigation were to develop a bionic baroreceptor (BBR) and to verify whether it corrects postural hypotension.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The BBR consists of a pressure sensor, a regulator, and a neurostimulator. In 35 Sprague-Dawley rats, we vascularly and neurally isolated the baro

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The power spectral density can be used to find a hidden behaviour in a physical system. We studied postural behaviour in a healthy population, by means of power spectral density, and compared it with a situation of complete immobility.
METHODS: A group of healthy volunteers carried out the modified Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction in Balance. A fibre optic gyroscope device was used to record the data. We compared the power spectral density in these tests and with another recording where the device was motionless. We looked for significant differences using th

Automatic devices are used to take postural blood pressures in the emergency department despite research proving their inaccuracy in taking single blood pressures. This study assessed the accuracy of an automatic device compared with a manual aneroid reference standard for determining orthostatic hypotension and postural drops at triage. Supine and standing blood pressures were taken with an automatic and a manual device in a sequential and random order, and postural drops were calculated. The manual device indicated 10/150 emergency department patients had orthostatic hypotension (7%) and the

Everyday experience suggests that drivers are less susceptible to motion sickness than passengers. In the context of inertial motion (i.e., physical displacement), this effect has been confirmed in laboratory research using whole body motion devices. We asked whether a similar effect would occur in the context of simulated vehicles in a visual virtual environment. We used a yoked control design in which one member of each pair of participants played a driving video game (i.e., drove a virtual automobile). A recording of that performance was viewed (in a separate session) by the other member of

Myocarditis can be totally asymptomatic or can manifest with chest pain syndromes, ranging from mild persistent chest pain of acute myopericarditis to severe symptoms that mimic acute myocardial infarction. About 60% of patients may have antecedent arthralgias, malaise, fevers, sweats, or chills consistent with viral infections 1 to 2 weeks before onset. Here, we report a postpartum young woman who developed postural hypotension as the first manifestation of fulminant myocarditis with initially acute "cold and dry" right-sided heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Common causes of postural hypo

Previous investigations using in vivo models to study the role of intrinsic laryngeal muscles in phonation have used neuromuscular stimulation to study voice parameters. However, these studies used coarse stimulation techniques using limited levels of neuromuscular stimulation. In the current investigation, a technique for fine control of laryngeal posturing was developed using graded stimulation of the laryngeal nerves. Vocal fold strain history to graded stimulation and a methodology for establishing symmetric laryngeal activation is presented. This methodology has immediate applications for

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by involuntary motor and vocal tics. Sub-clinical postural control anomalies have recently been reported in children with TS. The goal of the present study was to determine whether these anomalies interact with attention in postural control. Thirty-two younger (below 10 years) and 21 older (above 10 years) children with TS were compared to 13 younger and 15 older age-matched controls. Postural control was examined during standing with and without a secondary visual attention task. Sway velocity was higher in younger children

It is known that after spinalization animals lose their ability to maintain lateral stability when standing or walking. A likely reason for this is a reduction of the postural limb reflexes (PLRs) driven by stretch and load receptors of the limbs. The aim of this study was to clarify whether spinal networks contribute to the generation of PLRs. For this purpose, first, PLRs were recorded in decerebrated rabbits before and after spinalization at T12. Second, the effects of epidural electrical stimulation (EES) at L7 on the limb reflexes were studied after spinalization. To evoke PLRs, the verte

Post-flight astronauts experience temporary but sometimes severe postural control dysfunction and decreased orthostatic tolerance. Research points to a possible link between cardiovascular and postural controls and orthostatic tolerance [Claydon,V.E., Hainsworth, R., 2006. This study measured the postural sway and brain potentials evoked by a visual depth stimulus. Thirteen subjects maintained standing posture on a force platform, and were administered two types of depth stimuli, strong and weak. The latency and amplitude of evoked potentials as well as changes in center of foot pressure (CFP) and the electromyogram (EMG) were examined. CFP displacement was found to change according to stimulus intensity. In the occipital lobe, evoked potentials exhibited a triphasic peak, with the first positive peak at approximately 120 ms (P120), the first negative peak at ap…
