The audiological results of 46 patients (m/f 27/19, mean age; 57.4 +/- 11.1) with chronic renal failure (CRF) undergoing dialysis were compared with those of an age- and gender-matched control group (n = 25). Mean pure tone average from 0.5 to 8 kHz was about 15 dB higher in CRF patients than in control subjects. The ABR parameters of the test group were then contrasted with those recorded in a second control group (n = 47, m/f 26/21, mean age: 56.1 +/- 11.4) matched by age, gender and degree of hearing loss (HL). After assessing the normality of the groups by the usual criteria, using the dat

The study focuses on the underlying regulatory mechanism of age-related hearing loss (ARHL), which results from autophagy dysregulation mediated by miR-130b-3p targeting PPARγ. We constructed miR-130b-3p knockout (antagomir) and PPARγ over-expression (OE-PPARγ) mice model by injecting mmu-miR-130b-3p antagomir and HBAAV2/Anc80-m-Pparg-T2A-mCHerry into the right ear' round window of each mouse, respectively. In vitro, we introduced oxidative stress within HEI-OC1 cells by H2O2 and exogenously changed the miR-130b-3p and PPARγ levels. MiRNA level was detected by RT-qPCR, proteins by western blot

INTRODUCTION: presbyacusis is age-related hearing loss, manifesting as a bilateral symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss of adult-onset. It has different audiometric configurations and is associated with a decline in speech discrimination sensitivity. The objectives of the study were to determine the degree of hearing loss; types of presbyacusis; and speech discrimination score (SDS) of presbyacusics and to compare the SDS in different types of presbyacusis in patients seen at a tertiary hospital in Kaduna, Nigeria.
METHODS: a descriptive cross-sectional study, involving 41 presbyacusics see

Hearing impairment in older people is thought to arise from impaired temporal processing in auditory circuits. We used a systems-level (scalp recordings) and a microcircuit-level (extracellular recordings) approach to investigate how aging affects the sensitivity to temporal envelopes of speech-like sounds in rats. Scalp-recorded potentials suggest an age-related increase in sensitivity to temporal regularity along the ascending auditory pathway. The underlying cellular changes in the midbrain were examined using extracellular recordings from inferior colliculus neurons. We observed an age-rel

A key feature of age-related hearing loss is a reduction in the expression of inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central auditory system. This loss is partially responsible for changes in central auditory processing, as inhibitory receptive fields play a critical role in shaping neural responses to sound stimuli. Vigabatrin (VGB), an antiepileptic agent that irreversibly inhibits γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) transaminase, leads to increased availability of GABA throughout the brain. This study used multi-channel electrophysiology measurements to assess the excitatory frequency response areas i

Age-related hearing loss (AHL) is one of the most common sensory disorders among elderly persons. The inwardly rectifying potassium channel 5.1 (Kir5.1) plays a vital role in regulating cochlear K(+) circulation which is necessary for normal hearing. The distribution of Kir5.1 in C57BL/6J mice cochleae, and the relationship between the expression of Kir5.1 and the etiology of AHL were investigated. Forty C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into four groups at 4, 12, 24 and 52 weeks of age respectively. The location of Kir5.1 was detected by immunofluorescence technique. The mRNA and protein ex

INTRODUCTION: Musical hallucinations are a kind of auditory hallucination that are prevalent among the non-psychiatric population, but which have rarely been reported in the neurological literature. They occur most frequently in the elderly, in females and when there is a loss of hearing, but their pathophysiology has still to be unravelled.
CASE REPORTS: We report here six cases (five females and one male) of musical hallucinations diagnosed in a general neurology clinic over a time-span of five years. In five cases there was also concurrent hypoacusis, to a greater or lesser extent, and one

OBJECTIVE: We investigated a neural basis of speech-in-noise perception in older adults. Hearing loss, the third most common chronic condition in older adults, is most often manifested by difficulty understanding speech in background noise. This trouble with understanding speech in noise, which occurs even in individuals who have normal-hearing thresholds, may arise, in part, from age-related declines in central auditory processing of the temporal and spectral components of speech. We hypothesized that older adults with poorer speech-in-noise (SIN) perception demonstrate impairments in the sub

BACKGROUND: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is an autosomal-dominant inherited disorder clinically characterized by variable systemic manifestations. Among clinical features of the disease, 'precocious presbyacusis' has been previously reported. The underlying mechanism of this auditory impairment remains still poorly understood. Hearing is an active process located in the cochlea, where the outer hair cells (OHCs) play an important role in sound perception through a 'contractile' like movement resembling skeletal muscle fibers dynamics. OHCs status has not yet been investigated in DM1 patient

BACKGROUND: The Speech Recognition in Noise Test (SPRINT) is a word-recognition instrument that presents the 200 Northwestern University Auditory Test No. 6 (NU-6) words binaurally at 50 dB HL in a multitalker babble at a 9 dB signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) (Cord et al, 1992). The SPRINT was developed by and used by the Army as a more valid predictor of communication abilities (than pure-tone thresholds or word-recognition in quiet) for issues involving fitness for duty from a hearing perspective of Army personnel. The Words-in-Noise test (WIN) is a slightly different word-recognition task in a f

CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the hypothesis that age-related apoptosis evokes an intrinsic pathway of pro-apoptotic signalling within the rat cochlea.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the effects of ageing on cochlear apoptosis in rats, as well as the different signalling pathways involved.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female Sprague Dawley rats of different ages were used (mean age 7.72+/-1.93 months, n=100). Luciferase assays were used to determine the different caspase activities and ATP levels in rat cochlear protein extracts. Protein and gene expression was examined by

The data of World Health Organization anticipate very rapid growth of percentage participation of elderly people in the population on the whole world. In Poland, in the year 2005, the percentage of people in the "post productive" age (women over 60 years, men over 65 years) was 15,32% of population, the expected data in 2020 is about 16%. The problem of this group becomes very essential social question. One of very important vital difficulties of that particular age is the problem with verbal communication, caused by the hearing disorders, very often stated in the older population. The hearing

Auditory susceptibility to aging and environmental factors (noise and toluene) was investigated in two genotypes of mice, CBA/Ca (showing a moderate hearing loss with onset late in life) and C57BL/6J (undergoing spontaneous auditory degeneration with onset during young adulthood). Both strains of mice were often used together as a model of human age-related hearing loss, with a primary decline in auditory high-frequency sensitivity. Auditory function was analysed by recording auditory brainstem response (ABR). Morphological alterations of mouse cochleae were studied by light, transmission and

Assistive devices and systems for the hard-of-hearing (ADs) have been used in varying degree in Norway since the early 1970s. The impression is that these devices offer excellent assistance in addition to hearing aids. This investigation included 100 persons who were recommended devices in 1985. Of these, 81 persons, mainly elderly with sensorineural hearing loss, were visited in their homes. Most of the devices were functioning well, and the users were satisfied. There was, however, a considerable need for supplementation. The need for a system to help the hard-of-hearing to acquire ADs is st

A review of the files of 152 patients with normal hearing or slight hearing loss revealed in the older age group that (1) scores on the synthetic sentence identification task (SSI, S/N = 0 dB) have a tendency to drop in comparison with the discrimination scores for phonetically balanced words in silence (PB), and that (2) the wave V of the auditory brainstem response shows a greater latency prolongation when the stimulation rate is increased. However, no statistical correlation between these two age-linked phenomena emerged, so they seem to be the result of two independent processes.

A technique for measuring the discrimination of level differences with pulsed tones is proposed. Alternating tone bursts, each of 500 ms duration but of different sound pressure levels, are separated by 200-ms pauses. The advantages of this method in comparison with traditional methods (SISI test, Lüscher-Zwislocki test) which use modulated tones are that level discrimination is independent of frequency and that it shows very little dependence on sensation level. With this technique, the level discrimination of patients with conductive hearing loss, 'toxic' hearing impairment, noise-induced he

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent neurodegenerative condition characterized by the progressive loss of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Although oxidative stress is recognized as a central pathogenic driver of ARHL, the precise molecular triggers that initiate and amplify SGN damage remain elusive. Here, we investigated the role of the Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 2 (TRPV2) channel in ARHL. We found that TRPV2 expression was significantly upregulated in the SGNs of aged mice, which was associated with elevated oxidative stress. Pharmacological activation of TRPV2 in 6-mon

The underlying mechanisms linking age-related hearing loss (HL), and cognitive dysfunction are not well-understood. Traditionally, age-related HL was primarily related to damage of hair cells (i.e., the sensory component of HL) however, growing evidence suggests that the endocochlear potential (i.e., the metabolic component of HL) may also play a role. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the sensory and metabolic components of HL and cognitive dysfunction in 100 older adults. Forty participants were patients with mild cognitive impairment recruited during visits to the Memo
