Angry breathing: A prospective study of hostility and lung function in the Normative Aging Study.

BACKGROUND: Hostility and anger are risk factors for, or co-occur with, many health problems of older adults such as cardiovascular diseases, all-cause mortality, and asthma. Evidence that negative emotions are associated with chronic airways obstruction suggests a possible role for hostility in the maintenance and decline of pulmonary function. This study tests the hypothesis that hostility contributes to a faster rate of decline in lung function in older adults. METHODS: A prospective examination was undertaken of the effect of hostility on change in lung function over time. Data are from t

Prevalence of mental disorders in the Zurich Cohort Study: a twenty year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: In order to minimise retrospective recall in developing estimates of the prevalence of mental disorders in the general population, we conducted a prospective study of a cohort of youth from Zurich, Switzerland. METHOD: A 20 year prospective study of a community-based cohort aged 19-20 from Zurich Switzerland. The sample was enriched by subjects scoring high on the Symptom Checklist 90 R (Derogatis, 1977). A semi-structured diagnostic interview was administered by clinically experienced psychologists and psychiatrists. The six interviews from 1979 to 1999 assessed diagnoses and sub

A prospective study of incident squamous cell carcinoma of the skin in the nurses' health study.

BACKGROUND: Few epidemiologic studies are available that quantify the magnitude of the risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin associated with sun exposure and related factors such as skin type. In addition, several studies have found an association between cigarette smoking and SCC. PURPOSE: We prospectively examined the risk of developing SCC in relation to phenotype and the effects of sun exposure, as well as to cigarette smoking and other factors, during 8 years of follow-up in a cohort of 107,900 predominantly white women aged 30-55 years at base line in 1976. METHODS: Questio

Australian snowboard injury data base study. A four-year prospective study.

Information on the rate and spectrum of snowboarding injuries is limited. This 4-year prospective study at 3 major Australian ski resorts assesses incidence and patterns of snowboarding injuries, particularly in relation to skill level and footwear. Ski injury data were collected for the same period. In a predominantly male study population (men:women, 3:1), 276 snowboarding injuries were reported; 58% occurred in novices. Fifty-seven percent of injuries were in the lower limbs, 30% in the upper limbs. The most common injuries were sprains (53%), fractures (24%), and contusions (12%). Comparin

UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS). VIII. Study design, progress and performance.

The UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) is a multi-centre, prospective, randomised, intervention trial of 5100 newly-diagnosed patients with Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus which aims to determine whether improved blood glucose control will prevent complications and reduce the associated morbidity and mortality. Newly presenting Type 2 diabetic patients aged 25-65 years inclusive, median age 53 years, median body mass index 28 kg/m2 and median fasting plasma glucose 11.3 mmol/l, were recruited and treated initially by diet. Ninety five percent remained hyperglycaemic (fastin

Biomarkers In Prediction of Acute Mesenteric Ischaemia: a prospective multicentre study (BIPAMI study): a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Acute mesenteric ischaemia (AMI) is a life-threatening disease where early diagnosis is critical to avoid morbidity and mortality from extensive irreversible bowel necrosis. Appropriate prediction of presence of bowel necrosis is currently not available but would help to choose the optimal method of treatment. The study aims to identify combinations of biomarkers that can reliably identify AMI and distinguish between potentially reversible and irreversible bowel ischaemia. METHODS: This is a prospective multicentre study. Adult patients with clinical suspicion of AMI (n = 250) wil

International prospective observational cohort study of Zika in infants and pregnancy (ZIP study): study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Until recently, Zika virus (ZIKV) infections were considered mild and self-limiting. Since 2015, they have been associated with an increase in microcephaly and other birth defects in newborns. While this association has been observed in case reports and epidemiological studies, the nature and extent of the relationship between ZIKV and adverse pregnancy and pediatric health outcomes is not well understood. With the unique opportunity to prospectively explore the full spectrum of issues related to ZIKV exposure during pregnancy, we undertook a multi-country, prospective cohort study

Association of Alcohol Consumption with Risk of Pancreatic Cancer: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta‑Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies.

Alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for various cancers, but the dose-response relationship between alcohol intake and pancreatic cancer risk remains unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the dose-response relationship between them. A search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for prospective cohort studies up to February 10, 2026. Ten high-quality studies were identified, involving 22,365,829 participants and 21,255 cases. Comparing the highest with the lowest alcohol consumption categories, the pooled relative risk (RR) was 1.19 (95% CI: 1.10-1.28). No nonlinea

Effects of exercise on cardiac structure and function in patients with type 2 diabetes: a narrative review of prospective imaging studies.

Around 30% of patients with type 2 diabetes(T2D) develop heart failure and this leads to poor prognosis. Treatment with exercise intervention can improve left cardiac function at rest in T2D, but its effects on subclinical HF markers, maximal cardiac function during exercise, and right cardiac function are unknown. This review aimed to synthesize the effects of exercise on cardiac structure and function in patients with T2D from prospective cardiac imaging trials. The secondary aim was to address the methodological shortcomings of previous studies and map future avenues. Our synthesis showed t

Mechanical thrombectomy in patients with recurrent stroke: a cohort study based on individual patient data pooled from four prospective multicenter studies.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in mechanical thrombectomy (MT), stroke continues to be a major global burden. While outcomes for first-time stroke patients have been extensively studied, evidence remains limited for those with recurrent strokes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study utilized pooled data from three clinical trials and one prospective registry, including a total of 3516 patients with ischemic stroke who underwent MT within 24 hours of symptom onset. Patients were stratified based on the presence ( n = 617) or absence ( n = 2899) of a history of ischemic and/or hemorrhagic stroke.

Associations between anaesthetic dose-adjusted intraoperative EEG alpha power, processing speed, and postoperative delirium: analysis of data from three prospective studies.

BACKGROUND: We previously have shown that low intraoperative EEG alpha power is associated with impaired preoperative cognition, a delirium risk factor, and that intraoperative anaesthetic-dose-adjusted EEG bispectral index values were associated with a four-fold increased risk of postoperative delirium (POD). Yet, associations between intraoperative anaesthetic-dose-adjusted alpha power and delirium or delirium risk factors have yet to be quantified. METHODS: We examined cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related biomarkers, cognitive scores, EEG recordings, and delirium data
