Radiation skin reactions are a known side effect of radiation therapy. Moist desquamation reactions are not only painful but also may be a focus for infection and can be dose limiting. BACKGROUND: Although a radiation recall or enhancement eruption has been associated with a number of chemotherapeutic drugs, the histologic features have rarely been described.
OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to define the histologic features of radiation recall and enhancement eruptions in order to better understand their pathogenesis.

PURPOSE: Persisting symptomatology after breast-conserving surgery and radiation is frequently reported. In most cases, symptoms in the breast resolve without further treatment. In some instances, however, pain, erythema, and edema can persist for years and can impact the patient's quality of life. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was shown to be effective as treatment for late radiation sequelae. The patients's clinical pictures, characterized by an erythema preceding the skin manifestations, their aspect and the occupational histories, made the diagnosis of a radiation accident possible before its dosimetric identification. Doses evaluations using thermoluminescence dosimeters and ionizing chambers correlated well with the clinical estimations. PDT has been shown to be of value in inoperable basal and squamous skin cancers and in cutaneous metastases. Azone, a new investigative vehicle for HpD, is of value more for intralesional injections than for topical applications in tumors, except perhaps for superficial mucous membrane lesions. The more flexible gold head vapor is of definite value in the PDT program. For test models for PDT studies in dermatology and plastic surgery with HpD and other fluorochromes, single thickened resistant plaques of psoriasis and the common baso squamous acanthoma (seborrheic warty growth) have been used.
