Typology of small ruminant production systems and dairy farm characterization in Benin.

BACKGROUND: Livestock farming constitutes a principal component of the economic sector in West Africa, particularly within rural communities … no formal education, whereas the majority (91%) were fairly experienced and had been raising small ruminants for at least 5 years. Three farming systems were adopted for sheep and goat rearing: extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive, practiced by 78%, 18%, and 2.8% of farmers, respectively. A number of diseases were frequently noted, primarily respirator …

Integrating Subacute Ruminal Acidosis, Lipopolysaccharide, and Trained Immunity: A Comprehensive Review.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) has emerged as a prevalent digestive disorder that significantly affects the overall health of ruminants, with notable links to various inflammatory diseases. Throughout the progression of SARA, elevated lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in the rumen play a crucial role in initiating the innate immune response. In this review, we evaluate the recent insights into the pathways associated with SARA-induced inflammatory responses, with a specific focus on LPS. It is important to recognize the variation in the immune response activation potential of LPS derived from …

Review of Dynamic Resting-State Methods in Neuroimaging: Applications to Depression and Rumination.

Large-scale functional brain networks have most commonly been evaluated using static methods that assess patterns of activation or functional connectivity over an extended period. However, this approach does not capture time-varying features of functional networks, such as variability in functional connectivity or transient network states that form and dissolve over time. Addressing this gap, dynamic methods for analyzing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data estimate time-varying properties of brain functioning. In the context of resting-state neuroimaging, dynamic methods can rev

Guilt and Unfinished Business in Bereavement: Rumination as a Pathway to Prolonged Grief and Trauma.

Background: Bereavement often elicits complex emotional and cognitive reactions, including guilt, unresolved relational concerns, and repetitive negative thinking. Although grief-specific rumination is recognized as a key process that can intensify prolonged grief and trauma-related responses, longitudinal evidence clarifying its mediating role remains limited. This study examines whether grief-specific rumination explains how guilt and unfinished business contribute to prolonged grief and PTSD symptoms over time. Methods: A two-wave longitudinal design was used to assess bereaved adults sever

Mechanisms of rumination in depression: neuroendocrine dysregulation, circadian disruption, and therapeutic interventions.

Ruminative thinking, a persistent and passive focus on negative content, represents a key psychological mechanism underlying the onset and chronicity of depression. This review integrates advances in neurobiology, chronobiology and endocrinology to delineate the biological substrates through which rumination contributes to depressive pathology. Converging neuroimaging findings indicate that rumination does not arise from dysfunction in a single structure, but reflects coordinated alterations across distributed neural circuits supporting self-referential processing and executive control. 'Geophagy' and Clay Minerals: Influencing Ruminal Microbial Fermentation for Methane Mitigation.

Methane is a greenhouse gas with high warming potential, and ruminants like cattle and sheep are a major source of its emission. In the rumen, the first stomach compartment, diverse microorganisms and fauna live, including archaea, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, and fungi. They participate in complex fermentation processes. During rumen fermentation, various gases are produced, dominantly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In methanogenesis, methanogens utilize these two gases to produce methane as a byproduct, which burps out into the atmosphere. Therefore, interfering with this methanogenesis is a…

Review: Micronutrient supply, developmental programming, and strategic supplementation in ruminant livestock.

Developmental programming, also known as fetal programming, is the idea that changes in offspring development with both immediate and longer-term consequences can arise from in utero stress, including compromised maternal nutrition. Large animal models demonstrate that perturbed maternal nutrition, including macro- and micronutrient supply, (amino acids, vitamins, and trace elements) can alter development during gestational and postnatal offspring outcomes. Strategic supplementation of micronutrients (methionine, arginine, selenium, folate, vitamin B12, choline, cobalt, sulfur and others) also

Chronic regurgitation: a clinical approach to the under-recognised rumination syndrome in adults.

A woman in her 20s presented to the emergency department with severe hypokalaemia, resulting in a need for high-dependency unit care. She had a 8-month history of effortless regurgitation of food and significant weight loss. She denied any nausea or retching. A CT angiogram, OGD, enteroscopy, barium meal, MRI abdomen and flexible sigmoidoscopy were normal. The diagnosis of rumination syndrome was suspected from the history and witnessed regurgitation; the diagnosis was confirmed by high resolution oesophageal impedance manometry. The patient was managed with total parenteral nutrition (TPN), b

Blastocystis in free-ranging wild ruminant species across the Iberian Peninsula.

The growing wild ungulate populations across Europe represents an increasingly important source for the spread of zoonotic pathogens. Blastocystis is a common intestinal protist observed in humans and animals worldwide. Studies on Blastocystis occurrence and subtype (ST) diversity in free-ranging wild ruminants are lacking globally, and more data are needed to understand the epidemiological scenario in wild European ruminants. We collected 833 faecal samples from free-ranging wild ungulates across Spain (n = 699) and Portugal (n = 134) between 1998 and 2021. Using conventional PCR and next-gen…

The curse of the firstborn: Effects of dam primiparity on developmental programming in ruminant offspring.

The first parity, or first pregnancy, of ruminant females has negative effects on offspring during fetal, perinatal, and pre-weaning periods which ultimately lead to diminished pre-weaning productivity. Offspring born to primiparous ruminant females can have decreased fetal and pre-weaning growth, resulting in lower body weights at birth and weaning in cattle, sheep, and goats. Moreover, mortality is greater during both neonatal and pre-weaning periods. Insults during these critical developmental windows likely also have long-term consequences on first-parity offspring through developmental pr

Is trait rumination associated with affective reactivity to the menstrual cycle? A prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: A minority of naturally cycling individuals experience clinically significant affective changes across the menstrual cycle. However, few studies have examined cognitive and behavioral constructs that may maintain or worsen these changes. Several small studies link rumination with premenstrual negative affect, with authors concluding that a tendency to ruminate amplifies and perpetuates hormone-sensitive affective symptoms. Replication in larger samples is needed to confirm the validity of rumination as a treatment target. METHOD: 190 cycling individuals (M = 30.82 years; 61.1% Cau

A review on the functional roles of trehalose during cryopreservation of small ruminant semen.

Sperm cryopreservation is an approach to preserve sperm cells in liquid nitrogen or other cryogenic media for future use in assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization or artificial insemination. Sperm cryopreservation has been extensively used in the dairy industry and has attained excellent results after artificial insemination. However, for small ruminants the application of sperm cryopreservation is limited, due to the poor quality of frozen semen and special characteristics of the reproductive female tract. In order to improve post-thaw semen quality various cryopro…

First Molecular Characterization of Small Ruminant Lentiviruses in Hungarian Goat Population.

In 2023, a molecular study was conducted on the Hungarian goat population to determine genotypes and subtypes of small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) infecting these herds. Ten goat herds seropositive for SRLV infection according to a serosurvey conducted earlier in Hungary were selected, and 135 adult goats (>1 year old) were blood sampled. The two-stage nested real-time PCR (nRT-PCR) was used to detect proviral DNA of SRLV and distinguish between two main viral genotypes (A and B). PCR products were submitted for Sanger dideoxy sequencing, and phylogenetic and molecular evolutionary analyses w
