Serum samples obtained from 1.537 cattle in the 14 local government areas (LGAs) of Plateau State of Nigeria were screened for the presence of leptospiral antibodies using 13 serovars in a modified microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Two hundred and twenty-two (14.4 p.100) of the cattle tested had leptospiral antibody titres of 1:100 or higher to one or more of the test antigens. Over the years 1983 to 1984 two-hundred and sixty-five bulls were examined during mass occurrence of bovine cysticercosis in one farm; out of this number 67 animals (25.3%) were confirmed autopsically as infected with cysticercosis. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis was used to examine the serum of slaughtered animals by help of two antigens--Taenia saginata and Taenia crassiceps. With T. saginata the sensitivity amounted to 44.8% and the specificity to 86.4%, with T. crassiceps to 28.3% and to 89.9%.

Filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B timori is unevenly distributed in Southeast Asia. While B malayi and B timori infections are seen in the rural areas, W bancrofti is both an urban and rural problem. Control programmes in areas of subperiodic B malayi are complicated by zoonotic transmission mainly from reservoir hosts in some countries. The clinical features and laboratory diagnosis of brugian and bancroftian filariasis are discussed.

The micro-ELISA described in this report is simple and can give objective results for the serodiagnosis of human cysticercosis. The visual assessment of results was satisfactory. The ELISA results showed a remarkably good correlation with IHA. It gave good reproudcibility. Cross-reactions were eliminated by using whole worm antigen instead of the cysticercus.
