Histological sections of tongues, esophagi, and diaphragms from 512 adult ewes from the northwest United States and Texas were examined for Sarcocystis spp. Sarcocysts were found in sections of 82.1% of 504 tongues, 44.4% of 478 esophagi, and 51.7% of 89 diaphragms. Sarcocystis tenella was the predominant species and was found in 430 (84.0%) sheep; S. arieticanis was found in 18 (3.5%) sheep. Sheep infected with Fasciola hepatica were studied for their ability to transport intravenously injected radiolabelled IgA from serum to bile. The results show that there was an apparent reduction in the selectivity of transport of IgA into bile in infected animals compared with uninfected controls. The incidence and geographical distribution of hydatidosis was examined in sheep from ten localities in Libya. A total of 402 cases of hydatid disease (7.85%) were confirmed in a total of 5118 sheep examined; 12.74% of adult sheep were infected, but only 0.29% of lambs. Repeated use of modern anthelmintics gave good control of fascioliasis in sheep in a village in the inter-montane plain of the Yemen Arab Republic despite the presence on the same pasture of untreated animals. The sheep mainly acquired the infection during the drier winter season and it is probable that effective control could be achieved by regular treatment of all animals over that period.

Populations of Fasciola hepatica infecting sheep are regulated by at least 3 density-dependent processes. Parasite deaths due to parasite-induced primary host mortality, fluke fecundity and asexual multiplication in the intermediate snail host, Lymnaea truncatula, vary according to the intensity of infection. Empirical and theoretical evidence is used to assess the extent to which each of these processes in turn affects parasite population numbers.

Because of the potential importance of the fetal kidney in regulating blood volume and amniotic fluid volume, and their composition, we studied renal and cardiovascular responses to changes in blood volume in 12 chronically-catheterized fetal sheep at 110-135 days gestation. Single unit recordings were made in the lateral hypothalamic region and ventrobasal thalamus in conscious sheep during presentation of food and feeding.
