A sleep promotion program for insufficient sleep among adolescents: a pilot feasibility randomized controlled trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We examined the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of a sleep promotion program (SPP). METHODS: This pilot trial randomly assigned adolescents (13-15 years of age) with insufficient sleep duration and irregular sleep timing to SPP-continuation (n = 24; SPP in month 1, continuation treatment in month 2) or monitoring-SPP (n = 20; monitoring in month 1, SPP in month 2). SPP included 1 clinician session and at-home delivery of web-based reports of each youth's sleep diary data with accompanying intervention questions that prompt youth to engage in sleep behavior change. Att…

Reduced sleep irregularity does not impact peripheral vascular function before or following total sleep deprivation.

Consistent sleep patterns are associated with better cardiovascular health, whereas sleep loss is known to impair vascular function. This study examined whether consistent sleep could improve vascular function and mitigate the negative effect of 25-h total sleep deprivation. Sixteen healthy adults [10 females, 6 males; 34 ± 9 yr; body mass index (BMI): 25 ± 3 kg/m2] completed a randomized crossover study involving two 12-night sleep conditions, habitual sleep, and a consistent sleep/wake schedule that were separated by a 1- to 2-wk washout. Sleep was tracked via wrist actigraphy. Vascular asse…

Polysomnographically Defined Restless Sleep Disorder and Periodic Limb Movements during Sleep in Children Born Prematurely.

INTRODUCTION: Children born prematurely (<37 weeks' gestation) are at increased risk of perinatal complications, comorbidities, and iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is associated with restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder. In this study, we assessed the prevalence of restless sleep disorder (RSD) and elevated periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) in children born prematurely who underwent polysomnography. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of sleep studies was conducted in children aged 1-18 years (median age 4 years) with a history of premature birth. Children w…

Sleep status of older adults with sleep apnoea syndrome may vary by body mass index.

Obesity and ageing are the most important risk factors for sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS); however, the role of body mass index (BMI) on sleep status in healthy older adults is unclear. To explore sleep parameters according to BMI among active older adults, we cross-sectionally examined the relationship between sleep-related parameters and BMI in 32 Japanese adults aged from 83 to 95 years without long-term care who were unaware of having SAS. Correlation and linear regression analyses were performed. Moderate or severe SAS prevalence was high in both those with low (68.8%) and high (68.8%) BMI. …

Periodic Leg Movements during Sleep Associated with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder: A Machine Learning Study.

Most patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) present peculiar repetitive leg jerks during sleep in their clinical spectrum, called periodic leg movements (PLMS). The clinical differentiation of iRBD patients with and without PLMS is challenging, without polysomnographic confirmation. The aim of this study is to develop a new Machine Learning (ML) approach to distinguish between iRBD phenotypes. Heart rate variability (HRV) data were acquired from forty-two consecutive iRBD patients (23 with PLMS and 19 without PLMS). All participants underwent video-polysomnography to confi…

Combined effects of sleep timing and nighttime sleep duration on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: While short sleep duration is linked to higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the combined effects of sleep timing and sleep duration on NAFLD are less explored. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study of 39,471 participants from Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China, self-reported sleep information and ultrasonography-diagnosed NAFLD were obtained from Jan 2018 to Jan 2020. Sleep timing was categorized based on sleep midpoint: early-type (before 2:00 AM), intermediate-type (2:00-2:30 AM), and late-type (after 2:30 AM). We used multivariable logistic regression …

Sleep loss, caffeine, sleep aids and sedation modify brain abnormalities of mild traumatic brain injury.

Little evidence exists about how mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is affected by commonly encountered exposures of sleep loss, sleep aids, and caffeine that might be potential therapeutic opportunities. In addition, while propofol sedation is administered in severe TBI, its potential utility in mild TBI is unclear. Each of these exposures is known to have pronounced effects on cerebral metabolism and blood flow and neurochemistry. We hypothesized that they each interact with cerebral metabolic dynamics post-injury and change the subclinical characteristics of mTBI. MTBI in rats was produced …

Sleep problems, sleep duration, and use of digital devices among primary school students in Japan.

BACKGROUND: There is growing concern that screen time and media use in school-age children can negatively affect children's sleep. These negative effects are explained by three main underlying mechanisms: reduced sleep, time allocated for more media consumption; increased mental, emotional, or psychological stimulation by media content; and the effects of light emitted by digital devices on circadian rhythms and sleep physiology and arousal. In this study, we focused not only on sleep duration, but also on sleep problems. We conducted a large-scale survey to examine the relationship between ex…

Improved diagnostic accuracy for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea using an out-of-center sleep test.

OBJECTIVE: Polysomnography (PSG) is considered the gold standard for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) in children. However, many hospitals do not carry out PSG evaluations, and use out-of-center sleep test (OCST) devices for diagnosis instead. The aim of this study was to confirm the reliability of OCSTs for the diagnosis of pediatric OSA. We also investigated the factors influencing diagnostic reliability of OCST for the severe OSA patients who should be treated earlier. METHODS: This was a retrospective study using the Ota Memorial Sleep Center database. We analyzed the dat…
