This study tested the structural influence model of communication in the context of the 2022 global outbreak of the Mpox virus among young sexual minority men. The primary objective was to understand how distinct social determinants, including education, race/ethnicity, and interpersonal discrimination, influenced exposure to Mpox messages in daily life and affected health anxiety concerning the Mpox virus in the United States. We also explored the significance of LGBTQ+ community connectedness as a crucial form of social capital during the outbreak. We collected a three-wave longitudinal data

The goals of the present study are to examine the relationship between childhood adversity and adult well-being among vulnerable young adults formerly placed in substitute care, and to investigate how characteristics of their social support networks mediate this association. A sample of 345 Israeli young adults (ages 18-25), who had aged out of foster or residential care, responded to standardized self-report questionnaires tapping their social support network characteristics (e.g., network size or adequacy) vis-à-vis several types of social support (emotional, practical, information and guida

PURPOSE: We investigated how job applicants' personalities influence perceptions of the structural and social procedural justice of group selection interviews (i.e., a group of several applicants being evaluated simultaneously). We especially addressed trait interactions between neuroticism and extraversion (the affective plane) and extraversion and agreeableness (the interpersonal plane).
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Data on personality (pre-interview) and justice perceptions (post-interview) were collected in a field study among job applicants (N = 97) attending group selection interviews f

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive impairment is one of several unsolved social issues faced by patients with moyamoya disease. Although efforts have been made to investigate cognitive function using neuropsychologic tasks, generalizability has been limited. Here, in a preliminary study, we used structured neuropsychologic tasks to establish a standardized neuropsychologic assessment for adult moyamoya patients with and without difficulty in social independence.
METHODS: Ten patients with neuroradiologically confirmed adult moyamoya disease (3 male, 7 female) participated. Half of all subjects did no

INTRODUCTION: The social, language, and behavioral problems that occur with autism suggest that the syndrome affects a functionally diverse and widely distributed set of neural systems. The temporal lobe is an important part of the social brain, and manifests morphological and functional alterations in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). AIM. To describe the relationship between autism, epilepsy and temporal lobe dysfunction.
DEVELOPMENT: Psychopathology is common in children with temporal lobe epilepsy, with over-representation of ASD and unusual disruptive behaviour disorders. Behaviors associ

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) disrupts our most human social and emotional functions. Early in the disease, patients show focal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and orbital frontoinsula (FI) degeneration, accentuated in the right hemisphere. The ACC and FI, though sometimes considered ancient in phylogeny, feature a large bipolar projection neuron, the von Economo neuron (VEN), which is found only in humans, apes, and selected whales-all large-brained mammals with complex social structures. In contrast to bvFTD, Alzheimer disease (AD) often spares social functioning, and th…

This article examines the contemporary meaning of social medicine, a field marked by its porous boundaries, plurality, and contestation. Rather than offering a fixed definition, we trace its shifting forms across time, geography, and politics, positioning it as a "boundary object" that adapts to diverse contexts while retaining a minimal common identity. Comparative discussion with medical anthropology, social studies of medicine, global health, underscores social medicine's distinct focus on structural determinants, inequities, and justice. We propose three elements that could be the basic co

INTRODUCTION: Digital stress, resulting from expectations of online availability, can increase the risk of conflicts with friends. However, friendship conflict remains an underexplored indicator, particularly in association with stressful online experiences. This study aims to examine the association between digital stress and conflict levels overtime, considering the role of social media expectations.
METHOD: 1185 adolescents (59.3% f, Mage = 15.97 years, SD = 1.43) completed self-report measures at two timepoints, six months apart. A Structural Equation Model was employed to examine the lon

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that insecure attachment and early onset of social anxiety disorder (SAD) create vulnerability for future depression. The current study explores the mediating role of social anxiety symptoms in the relationship between attachment and depression at baseline and one year later. The study also looks at the longitudinal impact of changes in attachment and social anxiety, on depression severity.
METHODS: Participants (n = 162) completed structured clinical interviews and measures of depression, social anxiety, and adult attachment. A subsample of the participants (n =

BACKGROUND: Most choices in healthcare are not made in social isolation. However, current econometric models treat patients' preferences as the sole determinants of their choices. Through the lens of sociology and medical sociology theories, this paper presents a systematic literature review of identifiable social influences on patients' choices, serving as a first step in developing a social-interdependent choice paradigm.
METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline and using nine databases, we identified the individual agents or groups involved in health-related choices, the functional content

Cocaine use in France has risen sharply over the past two decades, accompanied by a documented increase in prevalence, emergency visits, and hospitalizations for somatic and psychiatric complications. Its diffusion is not uniform but structured around social networks, specific festive contexts, and critical time periods—particularly late-night after-parties and private gatherings—which appear to play a central role in the initiation and normalization of use. Drawing on epidemiology and network theory, cocaine use can be understood through an epidemiological lens, where its

Accidents in the chemical industry, such as those that took place in Seveso (1976) and Bhopal (1984), may kill or injure thousands of people, cause serious health hazards and irreversible environmental damage. The aim of this paper is to examine the ever-increasing risk of similar accidents becoming a frequent ocurrence in the so-called industrializing countries. Using figures from some of the worst chemical accidents in the last decades, data on the Bhopal disaster, and Brazil's social and institutional characteristics, we put forward the hypothesis that present social, political and economic

The mental patient liberated from his chains, is now considered as a patient resorting to a specialized branch of medicine. So, he has entered into the rigid and compelling structures of the modern medicine. The better he will adapt himself to the medical world, the more easily he will be considered as cured. This approach has the advantage to present madness with a securing image of a disease as plain as the somatic ones. On the other side, it deprives madness of its questioning aspects: relations with social structures, culture habits, problems of the personal and specific experience gained …

BACKGROUND: Unpaid caregivers are a critical yet structurally under-recognized component of health and social care systems, providing essential support to older adults living with chronic illness, frailty, and complex care needs. Although caregiving challenges predate COVID-19, the pandemic intensified reliance on unpaid care and exposed persistent gaps in system coordination, service access, and caregiver support. This study examines how unpaid caregivers in Ontario, Canada, retrospectively understand caregiving during and following this period, with attention to how health and social care sy

This study examined how social and cultural contexts influence coping resources of Druze and Bedouin in the Iron Swords War in Israel. The two Arab minority groups exposed to similar existential threats but with different cultural backgrounds and relations with the Israeli state were studied. A total of 210 adolescents (115 Druze, 95 Bedouin) aged 15-18 years filled out validated questionnaires on sense of coherence, social support, institutional trust, and post-traumatic growth. Findings indicated that compared to Bedouin adolescents, Druze adolescents demonstrated a higher sense of coherence

OBJECTIVE: Anxious-depressive attack (ADA) is a cluster of symptoms, including sudden and intense anxiety or depression, intrusive rumination about negative memories or future worries, prominent agitation, impatient behavior, and/or loneliness; in some cases, symptoms include a wide range of violent coping behaviors to manage emotional distress. Four characteristics-rejection sensitivity, rumination, social anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms-are thought to be associated with the development of ADA. However, the complex relationships among these factors have not been clarified. In this s

In this paper, we study whether leadership and community organisation can explain differences in the presence and expansion of coca crops in rural Afro-Colombian collective territories. Following a mixed-method approach that combines the analysis of satellite imagery, semi-structured interviews and household surveys, our results suggest that leadership and community organisation help explain differences in the presence of illegal coca crops by activating pre-existing 'stocks' of social capital that enable rural Afro-Colombian communities in the country's southern Pacific region to resist the p
