Assessing the impact of a business intelligence program on the employability and well-being of low-income women: a quasi-experimental study protocol.

Women are underrepresented globally in the field of data analytics, particularly in underdeveloped countries. We present a protocol to assess the impact of the New Dimensions program, a data analytics and business intelligence course sequence that aims to address this gender gap by providing free business intelligence training to disadvantaged women in Ecuador. The program offers both technical (Business Intelligence) and soft skills training, including Excel, Power BI, SQL, GitHub, R, Tableau, statistics, Python, and workshops on empowerment, employability, and public speech. The purpose of t

Defending against deepfake speech attacks via feature dropout and dropin regularization in large audio language models.

Deepfakes have raised widespread concern owing to their threats to privacy, security, and societal trust, driving growing research interest in effective detection methods. Audio deepfake detection has moved from handcrafted-feature classifiers to end-to-end deep learning architectures and, more recently, to self-supervised speech foundation models and general-purpose speech recognizers such as Whisper. The use of instruction-following speech large language models (LLMs), of which Speech Audio Language Music Open Neural Network (SALMONN) is a representative example, remains comparatively less e

Functional Outcomes of the Medial Sural Artery Perforator Flap in Oral Cavity Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The medial sural artery perforator (MSAP) flap is an ideal option for reconstruction of oral cavity defects owing to its thin and pliable nature and favorable donor site. Our study presents an assessment of functional outcomes including speech and swallowing in patients with oral cavity tumors reconstructed with MSAP flaps. METHODS: Patients undergoing MSAP reconstruction for oral cavity tumors between January 2014 and January 2018 were identified from our prospective head and neck cancer database. Functional outcomes were assessed in conjunction with the Speech and Language Team

Identifying neuropathologic disease in primary progressive aphasia using narrative speech.

INTRODUCTION: We present an application of artificial intelligence to narrative speech with the primary objective of predicting neuropathologic disease underlying primary progressive aphasia (PPA). METHODS: Using natural language processing toolkits, features were extracted from transcribed narratives of the Cinderella story. Machine learning ensemble models classified participants as either normal controls (NC) or as individuals with PPA and a subsequent autopsy-confirmed neuropathologic diagnosis of either Alzheimer's disease (AD) or 4-repeat tauopathy under the umbrella of frontotemporal l

Human facial expressions as adaptations: Evolutionary questions in facial expression research.

The importance of the face in social interaction and social intelligence is widely recognized in anthropology. Yet the adaptive functions of human facial expression remain largely unknown. An evolutionary model of human facial expression as behavioral adaptation can be constructed, given the current knowledge of the phenotypic variation, ecological contexts, and fitness consequences of facial behavior. Studies of facial expression are available, but results are not typically framed in an evolutionary perspective. This review identifies the relevant physical phenomena of facial expression and i

Impact of Patients' Preoperative Psychological Baseline on Postoperative Voice and Quality of Life Following Pharyngo-Laryngectomy with Anterolateral Thigh Flap Reconstruction: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing total pharyngo-laryngectomy with anterolateral thigh (ALT) free-flap neopharyngeal reconstruction require prolonged voice rehabilitation, yet whether preoperative psychological characteristics predict postoperative voice and quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes in this surgical population has not been examined. We aimed to characterize changes in voice and QoL after this surgery and to explore associations between baseline psychological characteristics and depressive somatic symptoms and these postoperative outcomes. METHODS: In this preliminary, single-center prospe

Algorithm-Based Hearing and Speech Therapy Rehabilitation after Cochlear Implantation.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the changes in the indication range for cochlear implants and the demographic development towards an aging society, more and more people are in receipt of cochlear implants. An implantation requires a close-meshed audiological and logopedic aftercare. Hearing therapy rehabilitation currently requires great personnel effort and is time consuming. Hearing and speech therapy rehabilitation can be supported by digital hearing training programs. However, the apps currently on the market are to a limited degree personalized and structured. Increasing digitalization makes it poss

Cognitive phenotype and language skills in children with achondroplasia.

BACKGROUND: Although achondroplasia (ACH) may not be considered a condition that is strictly related to neuropsychiatric problems, many children referred to pediatric neurologists and psychiatrists to undergo motor and linguistic diagnostic-rehab procedures. The purpose of this study was to delineate a characterization of language difficulties in a sample of Italian children with achondroplasia and analyze how an untreated language disorder can develop into a learning disability. METHODS: Seventeen Italian children (average age: 5 years and 8 months) with a clinical diagnosis genetically conf

Poor speech recognition, sound localization and reorganization of brain activity in children with unilateral microtia-atresia.

Microtia-atresia is a congenital malformation of the external ear, often affecting one side and being associated with severe-to-profound unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL). Although the impact of unilateral hearing loss (UHL) on speech recognition, sound localization and brain plasticity has been intensively investigated, less is known about the subjects with unilateral microtia-atresia (UMA). Considering these UMA subjects have hearing loss from birth, we hypothesize it has a great effect on brain organization. A questionnaire on speech recognition and spatial listening ability was adm

Total Glossectomy Without Laryngectomy for Advanced Squamous Cell Cancer of the Tongue: Functional and Oncological Results.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Total glossectomy without laryngectomy for large tongue carcinomas still remains controversial, as these defects may go along with dramatic effects on respiration, speech and swallowing. As a consequence, these procedures significantly impact quality of life. Therefore, larger case series are rare. Nevertheless, with the development of free tissue transfer, functional reconstruction has become increasingly popular and encouraging results are reported in the literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present our experience with complete glossectomy without laryngectomy and free flap

What the literature tells us about listeners' reactions to stuttering: implications for the clinical management of stuttering.

It is known that listeners harbor negative stereotypes toward people who stutter but there are a host of other findings in the literature that provide a broader perspective about how listeners react to stuttering. The focus of this article is a discussion of four areas of research related to listener reactions to stuttering: (1) how stuttering impacts listeners' reactions to mild, moderate, and severe stuttering; (2) how stuttering interferes with listener recall and comprehension of story information; (3) how children react to stuttering; and (4) how listeners react to strategies plus use in

Between-word processes in children with speech difficulties: insights from a usage-based approach to phonology.

There are some children with speech and/or language difficulties who are significantly more difficult to understand in connected speech than in single words. The study reported here explores the between-word behaviours of three such children, aged 11;8, 12;2 and 12;10. It focuses on whether these patterns could be accounted for by lenition, as suggested by a usage-based approach to phonology. The children carried out a repetition task, with sentences containing environments that can trigger assimilation and elision. Speech elicited was examined using a combination of perceptual and electropala

[Comparative radiologic studies of artificial esophageal speech of laryngectomized patients].

Radiographs were taken of the pharyngo-oesophageal segment (PE segment) of 19 laryngectomees, 16 of whom had oesophageal speech. The voice production was studied by X-ray video-tape. Oesophageal speakers with a good voice showed a much wider upper oesophageal (subpseudoglottic) space and more prominent or round PE segments than poor speakers. Video recordings showed that good oesophageal speakers develop motion within the voice-producing system, characterized by maximum air intake and by active retrograde contractions of the oesophagus. In contrast, these structures showed little functional ad
