Late Effects of Craniospinal Irradiation Using Electron Spinal Fields for Pediatric Patients With Cancer.

PURPOSE: For children, craniospinal irradiation (CSI) with photons is associated with significant toxic effects. The use of electrons for spinal fields is hypothesized to spare anterior structures but the long-term effects remain uncertain. We studied late effects of CSI using electrons for spinal radiation therapy (RT). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Records of 84 consecutive patients treated with CSI using electrons for the spine at a single institution between 1983 and 2014 were reviewed. Median age at RT was 5 (range, 1-14) years. The most common histologies were medulloblastoma/primitive neuroec

Surgical and radiological outcomes after posterior vertebral column resection according to the surgeon's experience.

The purpose of this study was to estimate and analyze the radiological, surgical, and clinical results of posterior vertebral column resection (PVCR) according to the surgeon's experience. Although PVCR has been recognized as the most powerful surgical technique to correct severe spinal deformity, PVCR is a technically demanding procedure with a high complication rate. A retrospective review of the chart and radiographic data of 34 consecutive patients who received PVCR was carried out. According to the time period, the former and latter 17 patients were divided into group 1 and group 2, respe

X-linked Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy manifesting with adult onset axial weakness, camptocormia, and minimal joint contractures.

Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy is an early-onset, slowly progressive myopathy characterized by the development of multiple contractures, muscle weakness and cardiac dysfunction. We present here the case of a 65-year-old male patient with a 20 year history of slowly progressive camptocormia, bradycardia and shortness of breath. Examination showed severe spine extensor and neck flexor muscle weakness with slight upper limb proximal weakness. Cardiologic assessment revealed slow atrial fibrillation. Whole body MRI demonstrated adipose substitution of the paravertebral, limb girdle and peroneal

Radiation-induced camptocormia and dropped head syndrome: Review and case report of radiation-induced movement disorders.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, camptocormia and dropped head syndrome (DHS) have gained attention as particular forms of movement disorders. Camptocormia presents with involuntary forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine that typically increases during walking or standing and may severely impede walking ability. DHS is characterized by weakness of the neck extensors and a consecutive inability to extend the neck; in severe cases the head is fixed in a "chin to chest position." Many diseases may underlie these conditions, and there have been some reports about radiation-induced camptocormia and

Microcomputed tomographic evaluation of vertebral microarchitecture in pinealectomized scoliosis chickens.

Pinealectomy was used to induce scoliosis in Broiler chickens, and the bone microarchitecture of the concave and convex sides in pinealectomized scoliosis chickens was assessed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Few studies have assessed the vertebrae bone microarchitecture of the concave and convex sides in scoliosis although the curvature of the coronal plane is the main deformity in scoliosis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in the bone microarchitecture of the concave and convex sides in pinealectomized scoliosis chickens by the technique of mi

Braces for idiopathic scoliosis in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine. While AIS can progress during growth and cause a surface deformity, it is usually not symptomatic. However, in adulthood, if the final spinal curvature surpasses a certain critical threshold, the risk of health problems and curve progression is increased. Braces are traditionally recommended to stop curvature progression in some countries and criticized in others. They generally need to be worn full time, with treatment extending over years. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of bracing in adole
