Not your typical strongyloides infection: a literature review and case study.

Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome is one of several clinical manifestations of strongyloidiasis and has a mortality rate exceeding 85%. The syndrome is characterized by a high organism burden owing to autoinfection and is most common in immunocom-promised hosts. The recovery of multiple pathogens is likely due to a piggyback phenomenon that occurs when enteric pathogens are transferred to the bloodstream attached to Strongyloides larvae. Herein, we describe a case of Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome with a novel feature in a 69-year-old Venezuelan man. To our knowledge, this is the fi…

Evaluation of Capillaria philippinensis coproantigen in the diagnosis of infection.

In order to overcome the false negative diagnosis of infection with C. philippinesis at time of absence of eggs in stool, coproantigen prepared from stools of infected patients was evaluated serologically. This antigen was able to detect anti-Capillaria antibodies in the sera of infected cases at the same OD level produced with Capillaria crude worm antigen using indirect ELISA technique C. philippenensis coproantigen did not cross-react with sera from patients with schistosomiasis mansoni, fascioliasis or strongyloidiasis at 1:00 serum dilution. Laboratory-prepared hyperimmune sera versus cru…

The usual presentation of a returned traveller is with a particular syndrome - fever, respiratory infection, diarrhoea, eosinophilia, or ski … thin six months of return, some important chronic infections may present months or years later (eg, strongyloidiasis, schistosomiasis). Travellers who have been bitten by an animal require evaluation for rabies prophylaxis.

Six Colombian patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

Six Colombian patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) are presented. The clinical and hematological features, the familial clusters of human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I) carriers and the prognoses of the Colombian ATL patients were similar to those previously reported for Japanese ATL patients. The only difference was the mean age of onset, which was more than 20 years younger than in Japanese patients. Three patients with ATL were suffering from strongyloidiasis. In one patient it was suggested that ATL developed after horizontal transmission from his wife. In addition, the…

A modified agar plate method for detection of Strongyloides stercoralis.

The agar plate method is a new technique with high detection rates for coprological diagnosis of human strongyloidiasis. This report details modifications of the technique and establishes a standardized procedure. We recommend that all plates should be carefully observed using a microscope because macroscopic observation can lead to false negative results. It is also advisable to pour formalin solution directly into microscopically positive dishes to collect worms by sedimentation. This procedure enables one to observe worms otherwise hidden. Sealing dishes with adhesive tape prevents larvae f…

An outbreak of hookworm infection associated with military operations in Grenada.

During 1983, a multinational military intervention took place on Grenada. After deployment, troops from several U.S. Army units noted signs … %) of the 529 soldiers. Stool examinations confirmed hookworm infection in 35 soldiers. One case of strongyloidiasis was also documented. Infection was attributed to ground exposure near homes with compromised sanitation. Units that joined the operation after the initial assault phase were at low risk of hookworm infection.

Infective gastroenteritis and its relationship to reduced gastric acidity.

Hypochlorhydria by compromising the defence mechanisms of the upper gastrointestinal tract predisposes to intestinal bacterial and parasitic … ence in cholera. Among parasitic infections, the most impressive evidence relates to giardiasis and strongyloidiasis. In some instances, the infections themselves may also cause hypochlorhydria. Longitudinal studies are required. Whether patients receiving H2-receptor antagonists are unduly vulnerable to gastrointestinal infections is unclear. The importance of hy …

Visceral larva migrans: examinations by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of human sera for antibodies to excretory-secretory antigens of the second-stage larvae of Toxocara canis.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is described for the detection of serum antibodies to visceral larva migrans (Toxocariasis). Excretory-secretory antigens of the second-stage larvae of Toxocara canis were used as antigen to coat the polystyrene plates. With sera from patients high antibody titers were observed in both ocular and visceral disorders. Cross-reactions due to other parasitic infections could be excluded, including other migrating larval infections such as ascariasis, trichinellosis, strongyloidiasis, filariasis, and anisakiasis. In a small seroepidemiologic survey of healthy pr…

Characterization of the Population Pharmacokinetics of Moxidectin in Adults Infected with Strongyloides Stercoralis: Support for a Fixed-Dose Treatment Regimen.

BACKGROUND: Moxidectin has recently attracted attention as a novel candidate for the treatment of helminth infections, including Strongyloides stercoralis. This study aims to characterize the population pharmacokinetics (PPK) of moxidectin in S. stercoralis-infected adults using a pharmacometric approach, and to perform model-based simulations to explore different drug dosing strategies. METHODS: A PPK study embedded in a dose-escalation phase IIa trial was conducted in NamBak, Laos. Eight micro blood samples were collected from each of 96 S. stercoralis-infected adults following a moxidectin

Strongyloides stercoralis: a case study.

This article illustrates a case of S stercoralis. This organism causes the disease strongyloidasis. Strongyloidasis is defined by acute manifestation, autoreinfection, or hyperinfection. It is contracted by skin penetration of the filariform larvae in the soil. Diagnosis and effective treatment is dependent on identification through special techniques with stool samples in the clinical laboratory.

Strongyloides spp.

Strongyloides is a genus of parasitic nematodes, which, unusually, has a free-living adult generation. Here we introduce the biology of this genus, especially the fascinating, but complex, life-cycle together with an overview of the taxonomy, morphology, genetics and genomics of this genus.
