Bronchogenic carcinoma: staging with MR compared with staging with CT and surgery.

Thirty-three patients suspected of having bronchogenic carcinoma were studied prospectively using magnetic resonance (MR). In this group, 30 underwent examination with computed tomography (CT), 15 underwent thoracotomy, six had mediastinal biopsy procedures performed, and eight underwent bronchoscopy. MR studies, which included transaxial spin-echo imaging (TR, 0.5 and 2.0 sec; TE, 28 and 56 msec) of all patients and sagittal or coronal imaging of 18, were performed without knowledge of CT findings, using only plain radiographs as a guide. CT and MR studies were interpreted separately. CT and

Amoxicillin-loaded polycaprolactone-gelatin nanofiber/net (NFN) matrices for pneumothorax treatment.

The recurrence rate of spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) is 30 % after basic conservative treatments, and it can reach up to 20 % after surgery due to the limited effectiveness of current surgical techniques. This highlights the need for the development of new, effective treatment approaches supported by biomaterials. Therefore, we aimed to develop a biomaterial that does not restrict the aerodynamic movements of the lungs, is resistant to lung pressure, and can withstand the movements during inhalation and exhalation,to prevent and treat pneumothorax recurrence. For this purpose, biod

Activation of TRPC6 by AngⅡ Induces Podocyte Injury and Participates in Proteinuria of Nephrotic Syndrome.

Background: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a common glomerular disease, and podocyte injury is the character of primary NS, usually caused by minimal change disease and membranous nephropathy. Podocytopathy is primarily associated with glomerular proteinuria. Losartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), is commonly used in the treatment of NS, and the AngiotensinⅡ (AngⅡ)-transient receptor potential ion channel 6 (TRPC6) axis has been reported to act on podocytes to regulate proteinuria in NS. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship in between AngⅡ-TRPC6, podocyte

Micro-compression: a novel technique for the nondestructive assessment of local bone failure.

Many bones within the axial and appendicular skeleton are subjected to repetitive, cyclic loading during the course of ordinary daily activities. If this repetitive loading is of sufficient magnitude or duration, fatigue failure of the bone tissue may result. In clinical orthopedics, trabecular fatigue fractures are observed as compressive stress fractures in the proximal femur, vertebrae, calcaneus and tibia, and are often preceded by buckling and bending of microstructural elements. However, the relative importance of bone density and architecture in the etiology of these fractures is poorly

Novel ultrastructural insights in lung surfactant membrane complexes under closer-to-native conditions as revealed by cryo-microscopy techniques.

Lung surfactant (LS) plays an essential role in preventing lung collapse due to physical forces by forming surface-active lipid-protein membranous films at the respiratory air-liquid interface. Throughout its biological cycle, LS exists in a variety of metabolically related, conspicuous morphological forms. Epithelial alveolar type II cells store LS as intracellular, tightly packed, multilayered organelles known as lamellar bodies. These are secreted as still-condensed material in the form of lamellar body-like particles, which, upon adsorption, give rise to the interfacial film and surface-as

Differential expression of genes in the RhoA/ROCK pathway in the hippocampus and cortex following intermittent hypoxia and high-intensity interval training.

Structural neuroplasticity such as neurite extension and dendritic spine dynamics is enhanced by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and impaired by types of inhibitory molecules that induce growth cone collapse and actin depolymerization, for example, myelin-associated inhibitors, chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, and negative guidance molecules. These inhibitory molecules can activate RhoA/rho-associated coiled-coil containing protein kinase (ROCK) signaling (known to restrict structural plasticity). Intermittent hypoxia (IH) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) are known to upr

A diagnostic classification for lumbar spine registry development.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Low back pain (LBP) is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The failure to differentiate underlying diagnoses in patients complaining of LBP is one of the primary reasons that studies examining treatments for LBP have yielded inconsistent results. To design a lumbar spine registry such that the accumulated data provide applicable guidance for clinical treatment, the incorporation of a functional diagnostic matrix is critical. PURPOSE: To propose a clinically relevant diagnostic classification scheme, simple enough for use in clinical practice but granular enough to differentiate ch

Anesthesia for an infant with congenital mediastinal mass: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Giant anterior mediastinal masses in infants are one of the most challenging cases faced in pediatric anesthesia practice. They can pose unique challenges for resection such as cardiovascular collapse on induction of anesthesia and injury to surrounding structures that maybe compressed or displaced. Principles that must be followed and kept in mind during removal of giant mediastinal mass include appropriate diagnostic imaging to define mass extent, airway control during induction, a multidisciplinary team approach including cardiothoracic for sternotomy, cannulation to institute c

Osteotomies in Flatfoot Surgery: A Narrative Review and Practical Framework.

Background: Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity (PCFD)-historically termed adult-acquired flatfoot deformity or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction-is a three-dimensional disorder of the hindfoot, midfoot, medial column, and, in advanced cases, the ankle. Joint-preserving reconstruction depends on matching each procedure to the dominant mechanical component of the deformity. Objective: This narrative review describes four osteotomies used in adult PCFD reconstruction-lateral calcaneal lengthening osteotomy (LCLOT), medial-sliding calcaneal osteotomy (MSCO), Cotton osteotomy, and medial-closi

Molecular insights into the oxidative perturbation of VIM-2 metallo-β-lactamase: Active site remodeling restores imipenem susceptibility in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

BACKGROUND: The global escalation of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA), primarily mediated by VIM-2 metallo-β-lactamase (MBL), necessitates innovative adjuvant strategies. This study investigates the potential of sub-inhibitory hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to restore imipenem (IMP) susceptibility by targeting the structural and catalytic vulnerability of VIM-2. METHODS: Eighty-six clinical isolates were screened, and a high-resistance/high-biofilm isolate (Pa13) was selected for mechanistic depth. The potentiation and near-synergistic additive effects of sub-MIC H2O2 and IMP were

Peroxynitrite-induced structural remodeling and aggregation of hemoglobin under nitroxidative stress.

Peroxynitrite (PN), generated by the reaction of nitric oxide with superoxide, is a potent reactive nitrogen species (RNS) implicated in nitroxidative protein damage in cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Hemoglobin (Hb), the principal oxygen-transport protein of erythrocytes, is a key intravascular scavenger and target of PN; however, how controlled PN exposure translates into structural remodeling and aggregation of Hb remains poorly understood. Purified human Hb was exposed to PN across sub-stoichiometric to moderate oxidant excess and characterized using intrinsic fluorescence,

Unlocking fine-scale temporal dynamics of coral reef health: a multi-kingdom microbial fingerprinting approach across seawater and sediment.

Coral reefs are rapidly degrading worldwide, creating a need for sensitive biomonitoring tools to detect early ecological shifts before visible collapse. Traditional monitoring often misses these incipient changes. We hypothesized that multi-kingdom microbial fingerprinting could reveal fine-scale temporal dynamics and early bioindicators of reef environmental change. The study was conducted on the fringing reef of Réunion Island (south-west Indian Ocean), a system exposed to local anthropogenic pressures. Seawater and sediment samples were collected bimonthly from April to October 2022 at thr

Dynamic response and pore evolution mechanism of composite improved loess using an eco-friendly curing agent and cement: a macroscopic and microscopic experimental study.

To address the loose structure and insufficient dynamic stability of collapsible loess subgrades in Gangu, Gansu Province, as well as the engineering and environmental concerns associated with conventional stabilizers (high energy consumption and carbon emissions), this study proposes a composite stabilization strategy using an eco-friendly curing agent (EFCA) and P·O 42.5 Portland cement. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests and dynamic triaxial tests were performed, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image processing together with fractal theory was employed to systematically eluc

Advances in metal-organic framework-based drug delivery system in cuproptosis-mediated cancer therapy.

Cancer continues to pose an immense burden on global health, ranking among the foremost causes of disease-associated mortality. Conventional diagnostic platforms for tumor biomarkers, while widely adopted, remain constrained by limited sensitivity, protracted workflows, and substantial economic costs, thereby restricting their clinical applicability. Therapeutic modalities such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy further compound the challenge, offering only modest selectivity and being accompanied by significant systemic toxicity and a high likelihood of relapse. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)

Failed Mucosal Allostasis Distinguishes Murine IgG- From IgE-Mediated Recurrent Severe Anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is classically framed around IgE-FcεRI, yet a subset of severe reactions engages an IgG-FcγR-mediated arm whose consequences for mucosal barrier integrity and epithelial repair remain undefined under recurrence. We propose that mucosal surfaces sustain function during severe anaphylaxis through coordinated operation of immunological composition, structural integrity and reparative capacity-which we term mucosal allostasis-and asked whether the two pathways diverge along this framework. METHODS: BALB/c mice were resolved into IgE- and IgG-mediated arms using a hybrid ac

The α-crystallin Chaperones Undergo a Quasi-ordered Co-aggregation Process in Response to Saturating Client Interaction.

Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) are ATP-independent chaperones vital to cellular proteostasis, preventing protein aggregation events linked to various human diseases including cataract. The α-crystallins, αA-crystallin (αAc) and αB-crystallin (αBc), represent archetypal sHSPs that exhibit complex polydispersed oligomeric assemblies and rapid subunit exchange dynamics. Yet, our understanding of how this plasticity contributes to chaperone function remains poorly understood. Using biochemical and biophysical analyses combined with single-particle electron microscopy (EM), we examined structura
