INTRODUCTION: Total laryngectomy (TL) is a standard curative procedure for advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal malignancies. A common but often underestimated complication post-TL is oropharyngeal dysphagia, which can lead to weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and reduced quality of life. The Swallowing Outcome after Laryngectomy (SOAL) questionnaire is a 17-item self-administered tool designed to assess swallowing function in TL patients. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the SOAL questionnaire for use in Serbian-speaking populations.
METHODS: A standardized

This pilot study investigated whether multi-site acoustic signal analysis could detect post-swallow residue and aimed to identify the most effective sensor location and parameters for detection. Three contact microphone-based acoustic sensors and one air-conduction-based conventional audio recorder were positioned at four anatomical sites: the jugular notch, near the pyriform sinus, near the vallecular sinus, and over the right deltoid muscle. Patients with dysphagia were recorded during pre-swallow, thin-fluid swallowing, and yogurt (YP) swallowing conditions. Acoustic parameters, including h

Down syndrome (DS) occurs in approximately one in 800 births worldwide and is associated with various medical complications including swallowing impairments and dysphagia. Advances in childhood survival have led to an increased number of people with DS reaching older ages. Aging is generally accompanied by changes in sensory and motor functions, including those involved in swallowing. Swallowing impairments can lead to complications such as malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia. Despite the multifactorial nature of swallowing impairments in older people with DS, research in this

The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of reduced frame rates in videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS) on aspiration assessment. The consecutive key frames (CKFs), that is, the range of key frames that are essential for penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) scoring of abnormal laryngeal penetration (ALP) and aspiration, was defined using retrospective 30-frames/second (fps) VFSS records for 50 adult dysphagia patients at an acute care university hospital. The results showed that the CKFs was larger in 24 aspiration patients than in 26 ALP patients, and its distribution was wider.

For half a century, cervical auscultation has been proposed as a classic method for screening aspiration in patients with dysphagia. However, the effects of standardized liquid viscosity and food texture on swallowing sounds are not fully understood due to the lack of uniform standardized bolus preparation. Currently, there is insufficient guidance in the literature for the appropriate liquids and foods for swallowing training, and there is also a lack of studies using acoustic signals to monitor swallowing progress continuously. Objective Based on the international dysphagia diet standardisati

Dysphagia poses a significant burden on global health, necessitating innovative neurorehabilitation tools. Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) based on motor imagery offer a promising avenue, yet the neural differentiation between distinct swallowing paradigms remains under-explored. This study investigates the electrophysiological characteristics of imagined swallowing to establish a robust, subject-independent framework for neural decoding. We recorded EEG signals from 30 participants across two experimental paradigms: imagined saliva and imagined water swallowing. A rigorous analytical pipelin

Tablet geometry significantly influences medication adherence and comfort, especially among individuals with swallowing difficulties. Conventional tablet shapes such as oval or cylindrical may hinder esophageal transit, causing discomfort and reducing adherence. This study investigated the functional impact of a novel almond-shaped tablet, designed to improve swallowability and enhance patient experience. Mechanical performance associated with tablet movement down the esophagus was assessed using in-vitro modelling techniques, including polymer tubing and funnel flow simulations, with strain m

During swallowing, a diverse range of mammals-from opossums to humans-propel food boluses out of the oropharynx via tongue base retraction (TBR). The widespread distribution of TBR behavior implies an ancient evolutionary origin, but the biomechanical mechanisms of TBR remain poorly understood. The evolution of TBR behavior is further complicated by the diversity of hyoid and tongue anatomy across mammals: to what extent does hyolingual morphology shape TBR mechanism? Using biplanar videoradiography and the XROMM workflow, we collected high-resolution 3D kinematic data in opossums (Marsupialia
